This invention relates to suspension means for welt hook bars for straight knitting machines, more particularly for full fashioned hosiery knitting machines of the Cotton t e.
yIIeretofore after a welt hook bar had been used in the making of the welt of a full fashioned stocking on a full fashioned knitting machine, it has been customary to place the welt hook bar on the top of the front bed of the machine where it is liable to damage by tools used during the operation of the machine. The hooks of* the welt hook bar are also liable to be damaged when laid on the front bed and sometimes the hooks catch in the stockings on the machines and pull them off. These objectionable features are eliminated according to the new invention by means of specially constructed hangers in which the welt hook bar can be kept.

In starting to knit a stocking on a full fashioned hosiery knitting machine of the Cotton type, it is necessary to use a welting bar which contains a number ofwelt hooks equal to the number of needles in a section of the machine. These hooks are inserted between the needles so that each hook will take hold of the first loop formed by the sinkers and dividers and will remain hooked to this first row of loops until a suicient length of the fabric is finished to form the welt, the bar then being used to turn the welt. After the welt has been formed this welt hook bar has heretofore been laid on the front bed with resulting danger of damage to the stocking, machine and welt hook bar, as noted above.
In the drawing the frame of the machine is designated by the reference character 4, the front bed being shown at 5. The upper structure of the machine is mounted at the rear of the machine as'usual and is shown as the customary gallows 6. In this gallows 6 is a rod 7 running longitudinally of the machine well above the knitting elements, and according to the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the welthook bar 9 is carried by hangers 8 suspended from this rod 7. The hangers 8 are preferably spaced between arms of the gallows 6 which carry the rod 7, as shown in Figure 3. These hangers 8 have notches at their lower ends as usual adapted to receive the ends of the Welt hook bar 9 and these notches are such a distance from the rod 7 that when the bar 9 is placed in the notches with the welt hooks 10 pointing upwardly, the'tops of the welt hooks come just below the rod 7 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. It will be noted that not only are the welt hooks facing toward and `close to the rod but they are in line with the longitudinal axis of the rod, thus affording a maximum degree of protection for the hooks. The welt hook bar is placed in these hangers when not needed for the making of the welt and owing to the fact that the operator very rarely has occasion to adjust anything on the gallows, and if he does, the welt hooks are well protected,"the bar is safely placed to prevent damage either to itself, the machine or the stocking.
While my invention has been described in connection with a full fashioned hosiery machine, it will be obvious that it is useful in any straight knitting machine.
What I claim is:
In a straight knitting machine the vcornbination of a gallows, hangers attached thereto and a-'welt hook bar detachably supported in idle position by said hangers with its welt hooks facing toward and close to the bar for protection of the hooks.A
