The machine on which this invention is Y shown is a well known Dalton adding maing' a pinion 18 in meshi with a rack 19 on the carriage 13. The said clutch 15 is conn trolled by a Clutch lever (Figs. 1 .and 2),
which is mounted on the case of the clutch and when moved into the dot and dash position in Figure 2 will cause the motor to operate the shaft 17. The arrangement of gears is such that the shaft' 17 will be rotated clockwise thus moving the carriage 13 to the right to the desired position where another mechanism, not shown herein, throws out the clutch by turning the said clutch lever back to the position shown in full lines in Figure 2. The clutch lever 2() is thrown clockwise by a throw level 21, pivoted at 22 and rocked clockwise by depression of the usual return. key 23, (Fig. 1), the said return key lifting a link 24, (Figs. 1 and 2)",
connected to the left hand end of the throw lever and thereby lowering the right hand end, which acting upon a stud 25 in the clutch lever 2O imparts a clockwise throw to this lever. The adding machine stands on. and is removable fromthe frame in which the motor is mounted, the adding machine being `one unit and the mot-or lwith its shpporting frame and the clutch-case and gearing being another unit, as explained in Letters Patent No. 1,209,858, and No. 1,270,845, and'exemf pliied by Dalton machines long in public use.l The adding machine can belifted bodily oif of the motor frame. The hub 22a into which the pivot pin 22 of lever 21 extends and by which that lever is supported is fast at its front end on thel frame of the adding machine.
Means is provided for operating the throw lever automatically as the carriage reaches its farthest-forward or left hand position. This means comprises a cam lever 27 (Figs. 1 and 3), pivoted on the machine frame 11 and urged clockwise by a spring 28 fastened to the lever and the machine frame; A cam roll 29 is rotatably mounted upon a bent lip on the end of the upper arm of the lever, the said arm and lip protruding thru the machine frame. f-

The cam is preferably located to move into cooperative relation with the cam roll when the carriage 13 reaches its extreme left'position, thereby throwing the cam lever 27 counter-clockwise. slide link 32, (Figs. 1 and 2), pivoted to the end e of the lower arm ofthe lever 27,'is slidably Y36, which cooperates with a pin 39 in the throw lever 2l by means of which the down- Ward action ofthe slide link, received from the lever'27, is transferred to the lever 21 which isthrown in a clockwise direction cansing the functioning of the return mechanism as heretofore described.
The return of the carriage releases the lever 27, which under the tension/of the spring 28 returns to itshome position as shown in Fig ure l. The slide link 32 is carried with it, of course. The return action of this lever system is limited by the extremity of the slot 35 striking the stud 34.
While the invention has been shown inzone form of embodiment and as .applied to a particular type of machine, it is to be understood that `it may take other forms and'be applied to other types of machinesall falling Within the scope: of the claims.
' lVhen the adding machine is lifted from or j set on .the motor-supporting frame, of course the lever 2l is removed from or placed in lts Y proper position with relation to the clutch lever by this mere act without requiring any special skill or care on the partk of the user of the machine.

4. In a machine of the class described,
which machine comprises an adding machine and power-actuated operating means forming distinct and separable units, the combination of a clutch-closing device mounted on the frame of the operating means, a lever mounted on the frame of the adding machine, and lever-actuating means embodied in the adding machine.
