IMPROVEMENT IN WRINGERS ANl) MANGLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,387, dated March 13, 1877; application filed February '19, 1877. A

- construction of certain portions of a wringer,

thepeculiarities of which will be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings,'mak ing part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side, and Fig. 2 an end, View, both partially in section.

In the figures, Arepres'ents the frame of the wringer, which, in general construction,is very similar to those in ordinary use. E E represent the clamps for securing the frame to the wash-tub. I I represent the rollers, which may be made either of wood or of rubber, or other suitable material, as the machine may be used as a mangle, as well as for a wringer. J represents the bearing-block for the upper roller, which is the yielding one. B B represent the two portions of the uprights, between which the bearing-blocks are held. These two portions B B are capped by a metallic band, 0, which is thickened, as seen at (1, so that a screw-thread may be made in it to contain the screw-bolt D. The inner end of thebolt rests upon an iron plate, 1, and between this and the bearing-block are placed pieces of rubber,

c e, as represented, in order to allow the rollers to separate to accommodate themselves to different thicknesses of clothing. The rollers are provided with the gear-wheels K K, so

they may be compelled to move together. This machine isprovided with a suitable handle, and is used with a wash-tub or for a mangle, in the usual manner.

I am aware that it is not new to insert rubbers in hollow uprights between the bearingconsiderable extent, while, at the same time,

access to the rubber, which sometim es requires renewal, is made ditficult. By my improvement, the curved plates 0 O serve the double purpose of covering and protecting the rubbers e e and of bracing the uprights upon which they are affixed, while, at thesame time, they may be readily removed by the aid of a screw-driver, whenever it is desired to renew one or more pieces of the rubber.

Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The bentcovering and bracing plates 0 0, having an inwardly-projecting shoulder, d,'directly below the bent part, in combination 'with the recessed posts B B, bearing-blocks J, rubbers e, plate 4., and tension-screw 1.), substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth. t
