Description
Oct. 18, 1932. J. ROGACZEWICZ 1,382,934
FURNACE TONG Filed Aug. 11, 1930 INVENTOR Ja/z'as/i ayaczcmcz ATTORNEYS Patented Get. 18, 1932 UNITED STATES JULIUS ROGACZEWICZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN FURNACE 'IONG Application filed August 11, 1930. Serial No. 474,475.
The invention relates to tongs, more particularly designed for use in removing clinkers from furnaces and consists in the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tongs.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal the opposite end portions of igure 3 is a cross section.
In removing clinkers from a furnace, it is often diflicult to get hold of the same by a poker or other tools ordinarily used. Also, on account of the intense heat, the operator can not remain long before the open furnace door. I have, therefore, devised a construction of tongs, which may be readily inserted in the furnace to grasp the clinker and which is easily manipulated by the operator without the necessity of exposing himself to the intense heat.
The construction consists of a tubular shank A, which has attached thereto preferably by welding a downwardly projecting shank B for attaching a handle C. The inner end of the tube A has a ferrule D of greater thickness to which is welded a jaw member E. Within the tube A is a rod F having at its inner end a bent portion forming a jaw G similar to the jaw E. At its outer end, this rod has sleeved thereon a member H which is recessed to receive the outer end of the tube A and to form an abutting collar thereagainstJ The opposite end of the member H abuts against a handle I and the rod F is bent so that this handle projects downward at right angles thereto.
section through the tongs.
The jaws E and G have attached thereto toothed jaw members J preferably by riveting and welding and these toothed jaw members are preferably formed of sheet metal stampings of channel-shaped cross section with their side flanges notched to form the teeth.
With the construction I have described in use, the operator grasps the handle 0 with his left hand, this forming a fulcrum, while the handle I is grasped by the right hand. As the handle C and I are spaced a considerable distance from each other, this will give the operator a leverage which will assist in lifting the clinker and withdrawing it from the furnace. The jaws are manipulated by the rocking of the handle I with respect to the handle 0, as indicated in full and dotted lines in Figure 1. Thus, the clinkers may be easily removed without discomfort to the operator.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. Furnace tongs comprising a tubular shank havin a jaw secured to its inner end and a depending handle intermediate its ends, arod extending through said tubular shank having at its inner end a complementary jaw and at its outer end a depending handle, said handles being spaced a considerable distance apart together forming a means for holding the tongs and also for opening and closing the jaws.
2. Furnace tongs comprising a tubular shank and a rod extending therethrough, said shank and rod having at their inner ends complementary jaw portions, a handle secured to and depending from the outer end of said rod, a handle secured to and depending from said tubular shank intermediate its ends spaced a considerable distance from said first mentioned handle, and toothed jaw members attached to the jaw members of said shank and rod.
3. Furnace tongs comprising a tubular shank and a rod extending therethrough, the inner ends of said shank and rod having integral therewith oppositely curved laterally extending jaw members, stampings of channelshaped cross section secured to said integral jaw members and having their flanges notched to form clamping means, a handle depending from said tubular shank member intermediate its ends and a handle secured to the outer end of said rod extending laterally therefrom, said handles forming a means for holding the tongs and for opening and'closing the jaws.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JULIUS ROGAGZEWIGZ.
