TRUMAN W. WQODWARD, OF HTQTCHINSON, KANSAS v GAP Application filed September as, 1929. Serial No, 394,603.
This invention relates to a cap for closing the filling spout of a radiator or the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a cap which can be easily and quickly opened or closed and which can be attached to a radiator or the like by clamps.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to
be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawingand specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the device in open position. 7
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the cap in closed position and also showin the manner of attaching the cap to the radiator or container, the section being taken on line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the parts shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a top plan view showing a different form of cap.
As shown in these views, the device comprises a member 1, either of ring shape, as shown in Figures 1 to 4, or of oblong shape,
as shown in Figure 5. This member isformed with a seat 2 to receive the flange 3 of the cover member 4. The member 1 is formed with the inwardly extending projections 5 which are diametrically opposite each other, the inner end of each projection extending downwardly, as shown at 6, and each projection is perforated to receive a screw or bolt 7 which passes through a hole in a portion of the radiator or container A which is formed with an opening which is surrounded by the member 1. Plates 8 have threaded holes 4 therein to receive the ends of thescrews 7, and as these'plates engage portions of the inner wall of the member A, they act with the projections 5 to clamp the member 1 to the member A. One end of each plate 8 abuts the extension 6 so that the plates 8 are held against turning movement when the screws 7 are-being put in place. A wire is bent into an elongated closed loop, as shown at 9, with its ends rounded, these ends projecting beyond the edges of the cover 4, and the central part of this loop is fastened to the center of the cover 4 by the bolt 10. An upright projection 11 is formed on the member 1 and has a hole therein to receive one end of the loop 7 A substantially U -shap'ed member 12 has to its ends bent to form eyes to receive the opposite end of the loop, the limbs of the said U-sl1aped member being connected together by a cross piece 13. Thus this member 12 is pivotally connected with the loop and is 05 adapted to be placed over a projection '14 on the member 1 which is diametricallyopposite the projection 11. Thus when the member 12 is in engagement with the projection 14, the loop will be-placed under ten- 7 sion so that it will firmly hold the cover 4 on its seat 2 in the member 1. If desired, a
Figure 5 shows the parts of oval shape instead of circular shape, so that this form of the device can be used with containers having oval-shaped openings. 7
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages'and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understoodthat changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is z- A closure cap for containers having an opening therein, comprising a substantially connected at its center with'the center of the raise the cover 4, it is fall within the ring-shaped member having a seat on its cover member, with its ends projecting beyond the cover member a projection on the ring member having an opening therein for receivingone end of the loop member, a U- shaped member having its ends pivotally connected with the other end of the loop member, a -cross piece slidably mounted on the U-shaped member and adapted to hold the limbs thereof together, and a keeper projection formed on the ring at a point diametrically opposite the first-mentioned projection and over which the U-shaped member fits with the cross piece of the U-shaped member snugly engaging under thekeeper projection of the ring member.
"In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
TRUMAN WVOO DWARD.
