IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 187,994, dated March 6, 1877; application tiled September 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WALDO, of the town of Prattsburg, Steuben county, State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Attachment for Operating Clothes Founders or Beaters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

The object of my invention is to combine with a clothes pounder or beater a lever to operate it with greater ease and efi'ect, and by giving it a lateral, longitudinal, and perpendicular motion, at the pleasure of the operator, the pounder can be operated at any desired part of the tub or other vessel to which it may be attached.

Ain the accompanying drawing represents a Wash-tub. B B are two clasps to attach the standards 0 Q to the tub, which stand perpendicular from the edge of the tub, and ar-- ranged in such a manner at the top that the swing D can be attached at the point E, and form a joint, thus allowing the swing D to swing freely across the edge of the tub. The

, swing D is of suitable length to pass freely above the tub, and at the lower end is provided with a joint, E, allowing the lever K free play at the opposite end in a perpendicular direction, and also allow it a lateral motion at this point. H is the handle of the pounder or beater J, and is attached to the lever K at the point I by passing through the lever K, 'and provided with a pin passing laterally through both, or in any convenient way, thus holding the pounder in its upward and downward motion with the lever, yet allowing it to swing to and from the standards 0 0, thus keeping the pounder-handle in a perpendicular position at any elevation or depression of the lever K. The operator grasps the lever at the handle end L. which is moved freely in any direction, thus acting on the clothes in the tub at any desired point, and pressing down the pounder firmly with great ease.

What I claim is- The combination of the swinging pendulum D with the lever K by means of the joint F and standards 0 0, attached to the top of the tub or other vessel by means of the clasps B B, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
