STEEL OR METAL MESH FOR REENFORCING CONCRETE, ASPHALT, AND LIKE MATERIAL Filed May 14, 1951 Patented Sept. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE j ALFRED PERCIVAL GUPWELL, or BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND f STEEL R METAL MESH FOR REENFORGING CONCRETE, ASPHALT, AND MATERIAL Application filed May 14, 1931, Serial No. 537,363, and in Great Britain January 14, 1931'.
The present invention has relation to a steel or metal mesh for reenforcing concrete, asphalt, granolithic and like material, and has for its object to provide a steel or metal 5 mesh mat particularly suitable for use in surface coverings of concrete or asphalt or such like, but applicable for reenforcement purposes generally, and which is of simple manufacture and enerally efiicient for the said 0 purposes.
According to the present invention a metal mesh for reenforcing concrete, asphalt, granolithic or like material comprises in combination a plurality of interslotted laths or slats adapted to constitute square or diamondshaped pockets or cavities, wires en aging apertures in the laths or slats and extending or passing across adjacent to the corners of the pockets or cavities on lines parallel to and offset from the true diagonal, and enlargements upon the wires adapted to arrest their axial displacement and secure the structure against collapse.
Advantageously the wires may be flattened, kinked, bent, or metal members may be Welded or secured thereto at points where they cross adjacent to the corners of the pockets 7 or cavities to constitute the said enlarge ments.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into prac-.
tice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawing which illustrates in perspective a metal mesh constructed accord ing to the present invention.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention the mat comprises a number of longitudinal and transverse slats a of strip metal, not necessarily of similar depth orv crosswise (not shown), the said Wires being:
slightly offset from and parallel to the true diagonal of the pockets. The wires 5 which prevent the disengagement of one slatfrom another'pass through the apertures near to the corners and aresubjectedat this point to.
a pressing operation so that an enlargement b obtains which prevents the wire from being longitudinally displaced, the said enlarge ments b butting against the slats adjacent the apertures a and generally maintaining .the
parts in their correct assembly, preventing collapse or separation.
In a modification of the present invention metal members may be welded or secured to the wires at the points designated-b to con stitute the desired locating enlargements, or
alternatively the wires may be appropriately kinked or bent.
In the present invention a'mat is provided of substantially rigid and permanent construction which is eminently suitable for reenforcing concrete, asphalt and other'like material andparticularly where such is used for surface covering purposes. The mats may be united by leaving the extremities a of the slats protruding, to which extremities the corresponding extremities a of an adjacent mat may be secured by an intersecting wire 0 or by riveting, bolting, or otherwise coupling adjacent mats, the coupled slats in this manner providing a complete sequence from one mat to another.
In a modification of the present invention instead of the slats being arranged to provide squares, they may be aggregated so that a diamond configuration is presented, the slats being maintained by. the oifset diagonal wires in combination with the aforesaid enlargements upon the wires.
If desired, instead of the mats being adapted for attachment to an adjacent mat, the said mats may be of a self-contained character each having a bounding edge frame which is attached to the extremity of the slats by bending the latter initially at right-angles to themselves and then directing the extremities inwardly into the square or cavity to constitute tongues of metal adapted to lock into the filling material adjacent to the edge of the mat, the slats being riveted to the edging or bounding frame, or otherwise secured thereto. Alternatively a bounding edge may be placed along one or more sides of the mat, the remaining sides of the said mat being left for connecting to an adjacent mat or mats.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A metal mesh for reenforcing concrete,
asphalt, granolithic, or like material comprising in combination a plurality of inter slotted laths or slats adapted to constitute square or diamond-shaped pockets or cavi= I ties, wires engaging apertures 1n the laths or slats and extending or passing across adjacent to the corners of the pockets or cavities on lines parallel to and offset from the true diagonal, and enlargements upon the wires adapted to arrest their axial displacement and secure the structure against collapse.
2. A metal mesh as claimed in the preceding claim wherein the wires are flattened at points adjacent to and within the corners of the pockets or cavities to constitute the said enlargements.
3. A metal mesh as claimed in claim 1, wherein metal members are welded or secured to the wires at points adjacent to and within the corners of the pockets or cavities to constitute the said enlargements.
4. A metal mesh as claimed in claim 1, wherein the wires are kinked or bent at points adjacent to and within the corners of the pockets or cavities to constitute the said enlargements.
