WINDOW SHADE BRACKET Filed May 13, 1931 V I/111,11 1/0 II/11; m
Inventor gammfizw A llorney .Patentecl Sept. 20, 1932 THOMAS GRIFFITHS, or JERSEY crrx, new JERSEY 'wmnow SHADE Branc'xur Application filed May 13,
This invention relates to improvements in window shade brackets and more particularly to shade brackets of the adjustable t e. The primary obj ect of the invention. resides in an adjustable shade bracket which after mounting upon awindow casing may be adjusted to accommodate shades of difierent widths, thus the practice of shifting the usual form of shade bracket is eliminated, and which bracket results in the marring of the woodwork of a room due to the changing of the position of the nails or screws.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable shade bracket which when in position upon the window casing and supporting a shade roller, will also act to prevent the accidental spinning of the roller 7 when the shade is fully wound thereon which results in the loss of the spring tension on the roller. V
A further object is the provision of a shade roller bracket which is simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, easy to apply to a window casing, and adjustable thereon, and which is attractive in appearance so as not to detract'from the interior decoration of a room in which it may be used. I
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and'arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a window casing showing my invention in use.
Figure 2 is'a perspective view of my improved shade bracket per se.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical-sectional 7 view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view on the line 4l of Figure 8.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my improved shade roller bracket in its entirety which includes an elongated base plate or body 11 constructed of bendable metal and 1931 seria n 537,091. I V j which has its longitudinal side edges bent inwardlyto form fianges'12 which are'disposed in-spaced relation to the body portion of the base plate'toprovid'e spaced parallel guide channels 13'13. Bent fromandextending on the same side ofthe baseplate 11 as the flanges 12, is a-central rib Or channel 14 which is substantiallyU-shaped in cross section and the bight portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced alined openings 15 for a purpose to be presently explained. The base plate 11 is also provided with openings 16 adjacent opposite ends thereof for the passage of fastening elements when the bracket :isain a mounted position upon a window'casing.
Slidably supported by the base plate 11 is a bracket member 17 which is provided with either a slot oropening 18 adjacent its outer end to, accommodate the pintle of the shade to be supported. The bracket member 17 is formed. with spaced substantially L-shaped flanges" 19, which flanges embrace opposite sides of the U-shaped rib 14: and portions of said flanges extend into'the guide channels 13 and flatly abutthe front side of the'base plate 11. r
Pivoted as at 20 between thehorizontal portions of theL-shaped flanges 19 is a catch member 21- which includes a manipulating head or portion 22 and an inwardly extending finger ortooth 23. A spring 24-is wound about the pivot 20 and has itsends respectively'engaging the catch member 21 and the adjacent portion of the shade member 17 whereby the said spring tends to urgethe tooth or finger'23 in a direction toward the rib 14 for engagement in any one of the open ings 15. The spring permits the catch member to freely ride over-the openings upon movement of the bracket member in one direction but serves to hold the member in a Y rigid position when once adjusted, and pref vents sliding movementof the'member in an opposite direction unless, the manipulating portion 22 of the catch member is actuated. In Figuresl and 3 of the drawing, I have illustrated my improved shade bracket in .use 7 upon a window casing A, there being two of mounted upon the casing adjacent the top thereof and in horizontal alinements Supported by thebracket 10 is a roller shade B which is provided with the usual reinforcing bar or strip at its free end. It will be understood that the adjustable shade brackets are oncemounted upon the casing A,
the bracket membersJ17 may be adjusted to accommodate the particular length of the shade roller, and after once adjusting the bracket, it is unnecessary to disturb the ad-' justment unless the shade is replaced. bya new one and the size of the new' one varies from that of the former one.; In order to obtain an adjustment, itis only necessary to actuate the catch member 21 bypressing upon the manipulating head 22 to'release the finger and tooth 23 froman openingl5, whereupon the memberI'Z may be freely slid lengthwise of-the base plate 11 to the desired adjusted position. I
' By reference to Figure 8 of the drawing, it
will be seen that the U-shaped rib 14; also acts as a stop for limiting the spinning or winding of the shade upon its roller. When the shade is fully wound, the free end carrying the reinforcing strip O will strike against the rib andprevent furtherwinding of the roller. This stopping of the shade at its fully raised position prevents the loss of tension of the stop, said channelmember being formed with V openings, and a bracket flatly engaging the s des and bight portion of said channel member, and a latch pivoted to said bracket and ings tosecure the bracket in place.
In testimony whereofI alfiximy signature.
THOMAS GRIFFITHS;
-86 5 having means to extend through said 'open- 7 spring usually provided inshade rollers ofthis construction.
. VMore specifically, the
bightportion bf the U-shaped rib 14 extends beyond the body 11' i of the base into position for effective engagement with'the reinforcing strip G of the shade so as to limit unrestrained spinning of the shade, this-being admirably illustrated in Fi ure 3.
lthough I have, illustrated but one bracket member. 17 as associated with a base-plate'll, the said base plate may support a pair of bracket members for use. in instances where a narrowdividing strip is provided in the a window casing between two adjacentwindows. 11 constitutes a support for adjustablysup porting a pair of bracket members 17;
While I have shown and'described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it willbe understood that minor changes may be resorted ,to as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus "described the invention,
what I claimas new and d'esire to secure byLetters Patent is z c In such instance, the one base plate l. Ina shade support, an elongatedbase' having a central longitudinal channel mem- 'ber U-shaped in cross section,the bight portion of which is, disposed beyond-the plane of the edge portions of the base to form a 1 1: a
shade stop, saidchannel member beinglformed g with openings, abracket flatly engaging the sides and bight portion of said channel memp berandhaving L-shaped flanges flatly con-
