BREAD BOX Filed Jan. 15. 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor 5 fluyusf Binysien A Home y Patented Sept. 13, 1932 aueusr rrmss'ran, or aocx RAPIDS, IOWA BREAD 302 Application filed January 15, 1931. 'Serial No. 509,005.
This invention relates to a bread box, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby slices of bread can be cut from the loaf without removing the loaf from the box, withmeans whereby slices of even thickness can be cut.
Another object of the invention is to provide an extension on the box for receiving the slicesas they are cut from the loaf and to provide a cover for the extension for protecting the same from dirt and dust when the box is closed.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated intheaccompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the inventlon in detail, reference will be had'to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: b Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing the covers in open'position.
Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3.
As shown in these views, the numeral 1 indicates the bread box and 2 the cover thereon. One end of the box is formed with an opening'3'and a vertically arranged slit or slot 4 is formed in one side of the box,
5 preferably the front side, a slight distance from the end which has the box opening 3 therein. A-fiange 5, extends outwardly from the side of the box to surround the slit or slot 4.
An extension 6 is formed on the bottom of the open end of the box and this extension slopes upwardly from said bottom and end pieces 7 of substantially triangular shape have their large ends connected with the ends of the extension and their sideswith the sides of the box with their pointed ends merging into the end wall of the box adjacent the top thereof. A cover 8 is hingedlyconnected with the outer edge of the extension 6 as shown at 9, this cover consisting of a covering part and side parts, the side parts overlapping the ends 7 of the extension when the cover 8 is raised and the outer edge of the 7 cover part of the cover is so shaped that it will extend under part of the main cover 2 of the box when the cover 8 is raised so that thecover 2 will hold the cover 8 in closing position as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A flexible member 10 connects one end 7 v with the cover 8 to limit the downward swinging movement of the cover 8 and han dles 11 are attached to the outer vface of the cover 8 for facilitating its being moved to open and closed position. These handles rest on 'the surface on which the box is placed when the cover 8 is open as shown in Figure 3. Y
A strip 12 preferably of zinc or other soft material placed on the bottom of the box extends-through the opening 3 and this strip is formed with a groove 13 which alines with the slit or slot 4 and is adapted to receive the cutting edge of the knife placed in the slit 4V to permit the cutting edge of the knife to pass entlrely through the loaf and entirely sever the slice from the loaf.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by opening the covers and moving the loaf in the box to a position where one end is in alinement with the walls of the opening 3 and then pass a knife through the slit 4 and move the knife downwardly through the slit a slice of bread will be out from the loaf. The slice will drop upon the extension 6 and the cover 8 so that it can be readily picked up and by alining the end of the loaf with the walls of the opening 3 slices of the same thickness can be out each time the knife is drawn through the loaf. The flange 5 prevents the knife from having sidewise movement and acts as a guide for holding the blade of the knife in a straight position. The knife should be just long enough so that it does not touch the opposite side of the bread box,
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts,
provided that such changes fall within the sec of the appended claim.
having part of the and ving thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: a
A bread box comprising a container and a cover therefor, an opening in one end of the container and one s de wall of the container a vertically arranged slit therein located adjacent the open end of the box whereby a knife can be passed throu h the slit and drawn through a loaf of brea to cut a slice therefrom, and an outwardly extending flange surrounding the slit and forming guiding means for the knife, an extension at the open end of the container comprising a bottom part anda pair of side parts, the outer of said side parts sloping upwardly and inwardly to the top of the box and a cover 'part hinged to the outer part of the bottom extension for covering the same Y the open end of the box when said cover part is in raised position. 7
In testimony whereof I afix 111 AUGUST PF signature. GSTEN.
