T. SPEED. CHIMNEY-DAMPER.

NI'IED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
THOMAS SPEED, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-DAMPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,565, dated February 20, 1877; application filed January 6, 1877.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SPEED, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful improvement in Ohimney-Dam ier, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a front view of a grate front to which myimproved damper has been applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line 0051:, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved damper for the throat of a chimney at the top of a grate front. to enable the said throat to be nearly closed after the fire is fully kindled to prevent the warm air from the room from passing ofl' up the chimney.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a grate, and B represents a grate front. 0 is a plate of sheet metal, bent into such a form as to fit into the top of the grate front B, and of such a length and width as to close the opening or throat of the chim- The outer edge of the plate 0 is bent around a wire, I), to stiffen and strengthen it.
In the center of the Wire D is formed a loop, I d to serve as a handle for convenience in putting in and taking out and adjusting the damper U. The ends of the wire I) projectso far as to reach to the top bar of the grate A, and are bent to form steps 01 to rest upon said gratebar, and assist in keeping the damper U in place.
With this construction. when the fire is to be started, or when fresh coal is to be put upon it, the damper C is drawn out, sothat the smoke'and gas can pass off freely.
When the fire is fully kindled, and the most of the gas driven off, the damper can be pushed in, nearly closing the opening into the chimney to prevent the warm air from the room from passing off through said chimney, thus greatly increasing the comfort of the room, and economizing the use of fuel.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an article of manufacture, a sheet-metal plate, 0, having one edge bent around the wire I), said wire being provided in the middle with a loop, 01, and at each projecting end with steps (F, as shown and described,t'or the purpose specified.
