This invention relates to an expansible and contractible device or implement expressly constructed and designed for stretching and reshaping damaged caps such as worn by men and boys.
The invention is similar in some respects to tools and devices used in hat pressing and cleaning establishments for blocking and reconditioning soiled and damaged hats, but
. is specifically fashioned and designed to adapt it for reshapingcaps such as have become mis-shapen, from rain and dampness.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device which is structurally different from known devices employed for the same purpose, wherebyto provide a novel and practical accessory for this specific purpose which is efficient in performance, positive and de- "pendable in action, and an appreciable achievement in this line of endeavor.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of the preferred structural embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is an elevational view of a device 3 constructed in accordance with the present 77 of Figure 4.
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view.
Figure 9 is a detail section on the line 99 of Figure 8.
The general assembly of the invention is evident from a contrast of Figures 1 and 4 and referring to these figures it will be seen that the numeral 10 designates the relatively stationary plate, this being in the form of a disc having a. marginal groove 11 and circumferentially spaced notches 12; The cen- 1932. Serial No. 596,317.
ter of the plate is apertured as at 13 to accommodate the smooth end portion 14 of a feed screw 15. Washers 16 are keyed or otherwise rigidly fastened to the shaft above and below the plate so as to form a swivel connection of the shaft with the plate.
The notches 12- serve as keeper seats and are spanned by a wire ring 17 which is seated in the groove 11. The relatively movable disc or plate is distinguished by the numeral 18 and is somewhat smaller in diameter than the first plate but has. similar characteristics. For example, the marginal portion is pro vided with circumferentially spaced notches 19 and a'margmal groove 20 receiving a wire ring 21. The ring here serves as a pivotal mounting for the hinge eyes 22 on the upper ends of the fiat metal arms 23 of the expansible and contractible unit 24.
The lower end of each arm is provided with an arcuate plate or form 25 of appropriate shape occupying the approximate angularity illustrated in Figure 9. This form is concealed in a felt or suitable fabric protector 26. The last-named ends of the arms 23 extend through the notches 12' and are confined therein by the embracing ring 17. The screwthreaded portion of the shaft or screw 15 is threaded through a collar 27 secured in a central opening in the disc 18.
On the upper end of the feed screw. is a handwheel 28 shaped for convenient manipulat on. The numeral 29 merely designates a washer as shownjin Figure 7.
The gist of the invention is in the provision of the notched plate or disc 10 having the feed screw 15 concentrically and swivelly connected thereto, together with a superposed smaller disc having the screw-threaded collar through which the threaded portion of the feed screw is adjustable. The plate'or disc thus arranged serve to accommodate the units 24 which are hingedly connected to the upper disc 18 and are longitudinally slidable screw concentrically and swivelly connected through the notches 12 in the relatively stationary disc 10.
The cloth covered forms'ar e located below the plate 10 and, collectively considered, they 7 are disposed, when in contracted position, in
the overlapped state represented in Figure 2. It is evident therefore that the turning of the feed screw through the medium of the handwheel 28 serves to adjust the disc 18 up or down according to the direction of rotation,
on the shaft 1 5. Hence the unit 24 may be expanded or contracted to accommodate difbe placed in the cap bandto. stretch the cap steam buck such as! are used in cleaningestab ferent sized caps. V I
The covered form on the ends of the arms ofthe units 24 co-operate in forming an exsecond-named disc, a plurality of expander units arranged in ,circumferentially spaced order with respect to the discs, each umt com prising an arm having aneye at its upper end pivoted on the second-named ring and mov- In testimony whereof I; alfix my'sig-nature;

:LWhile the preferred embodiment'of the invention has been shown'and described,it is to be understood that minor changes coming "within the field of invention claimed may be resorted toif desired.
Iclaim: 1. A capreshaping device comprising a relatively stationary disc-like. plate, a: feed to'andrising-from said plate and havingop .eratmg means on its upper end, a somewhat smaller disc like plate mounted for adjustment on said feed screw and movable; togward and from said first namediplate',fa plu r'alit'y of companion expansible' and contract;- ible unit-s provided at their lowerends with e overlapping complemental form-sections, the
