This invention relates to welders masks, and has for an object to provide a device of the type wherein the requisite strength and rigidity are attained by the use of material of 1 5 minimum weight.
It is well known that the use of such masks imposes upon the user a considerable weight which becomes objectionable with continued use and the present invention is directed to 14W the amelioration of the condition by making the mask of such form as to present the maximum strength and rigidity, while using a material thin and therefore light, which because of the form, presents the necessary .15 rigidity.
At present, the material approved for the construction of such devices is a fibre board, or a sheet of fibre, but it is to be understood, that the invention contemplates theme of t any material now known, or which may be hereinafter known, which lends itself to the type of device illustrated.
It is also well known, that a circular or spherical or cylindrical form presents the greatest amount of rigidity in regard to the material employed, and the present invention, therefore, is directed to providing the body of the mask throughout the greater portion of its area upon a cylindrical arc, while the top and 5 bottom are domed as spherical segments.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for fitting the mask to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to pro- 3 vide improved means for supporting the mask when held in the hand of the user.
The invention is directed to other objects, and possesses other features of novelty and advantage, some of'which, together with the foregoing, will be hereinafter more fully described.

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The body ,of the mask is preferably made up of an anterior section 20, which is substantally semi-cylindrical. No definite line of demarkation exists between this semicylindrical part, and the sides 21, but for the purpose only of indicating the existence of such parts, the line A-A has been shown upon Figures 1, 4 and 8. At the rear of the imaginary line, thus hypothetically shown,
the parts 21 are approximately plane sur faces, although they will follow a certain curvature provided by the domes at-the top and bottom, which will be hereinafter more fully described.
It is the anterior of the mask, which is subjected to the greatest strain, and the wings or posterior parts are only for the purpose of protecting ears, or posterior part of the neck of the user.
The body may be of any length desired, and will preferably be made in different lengths to meet different requirements, but whatever the length, a dome 22 is provided at the top, and a dome 23 at the bottom.
As previously discussed, these domes 22 and 23, for the purpose of attaining the maximum strength and rigidity for the material used are substantially segments of spheres Of course, the present invention is not limited to absolute accuracy in the spherical formation of the domes, or in the cylindricity of the anterior portion of the body part, but cylindricity in the one case and sphericity in the other case are aimed at.
The dome 22, will of course, be cut out sight member 27, which has already been covered in a prior patent to this applicant, and will therefore, need no particular description herein. The body part is provided with a head band comprising the segment 28 and the tubular part 29. The segment 28 is nearly a complete band, having its ends inserted into opposite ends of the tubular part 29, but stopping short thereof in any desired relation as indicated at 30, in Figure 5.
The tubular part 29 is provided with a slot 31, and the segment 28 is provided at each end with a clip comprising the upstanding ears 32, between which, in each instance, a nut 33 ispivoted by the pintle 34. A right and left hand screw 35 engages the nuts 33 by the turning of which, the ears 32 may be drawn together or moved further apart, thereby moving the band segment 28, w1th1n the tube 29, and either enlarging or ensmalling the band as an entirety. ThlS band 1s connected to the arch 335 in any approved manner as by the rivets 36, the arch belng formed into a loop as at 37, and secured'as by the rivet 38. 'As it is desirable that no metal shall come in contact with the head of the user, it is at present contemplated, that these rivets 36 and 38 shall be made of fibre material, but while such fibre rivets are desirable, the invention is not limited thereby. The side of the loop 37, opposite the rivets 36, are pivoted upon a pintle 39, a spring 40 being employed to exert the necessary or desired tension for properly maintaining the mask in upright position when the band encircles the head and the arch 335 bears upon the top of the head.
Instead of forming the tubular member 29 with the slot 31, a modification of the adjusting means is shown at Figures 6 and 7 wherein the tubular part 29 carries an upstanding ear 32, and the band 28 carries an upstanding ear 32". The screw 35 is provided with a knurled head 41. In the type shown at Figure 5, the screw 35 is provided with a bent part 42. It is to be understood, however, that this means for actuating the screw, the bent part 42 or the knurled head 41, are
elective and either may be employed in the place of the other. When the type of adjusting means, shown at Figures 6 and 7 are employed, the ear 32 is secured by means of the leg 43 to the rivets 36', the ear 32 is attached by means of the leg 44 and rivets 45 to the ends of the tubular member 29.
Two of these adjusting organizations are contemplated one upon either side of the head. In that case the ear 32 will be duplicated at each end of the tubular section, and the ear 32 at each end of the band section. In any and all of the types shown, the band section 28 or 28 is a single segment substantially forming a continuous band, the ends approaching each other more or less closely and in the position of minimum adjustment, contacting.
The tubular section is merely for accommodating the ends of this band section, and whether the type of adjustment be that as shown at Figure 5 or Figures 6 and 7, the
opposite ends of the band section are inserted into the opposite ends of the tubular section.
When only a single adjustment of the type shown at Figures 6 and 7 is employed, it is necessary to secure one of the inserted ends of the band section 28 into one of the ends of the tubular section 29. The connection may be of any usual and ordinary form.
At Figure 7 A there is shown such a connec tion, wherein a rivet 36 is shown as inserted through the tubular section 29' and the band section 28'. It is obvious that this rivet shown at 36 may be one or both of the rivets 36, which are inserted through the band section, and one of the ends of the arch 335.
However, the manner of making this connection between one end of the band section and one end of the tubular section isimmaterial.
A chin support 46 is provided within the mask which is attached in any approved manner as by the bolts 47, a plurality of openings 48 being provided to receive the bolts 47 at various adjusted positions.
At times and for some classes of work, it is expedient to employ the mask without the head band and arch. In this case, a handle 49 is provided which is in the form of a fibre tube, being slitted and the ends compressed as shown at 50, and secured by means of any desired number of rivets or bolts 51 to the anterior part of the mask. To protect the hand of the user while holding the mask, a shield 52 is provided which is secured to the handle 49 by any usual removable type of fasteners as the screw 53, and the screw 54. When the employment does not call .for a shield, and it is found more convenient to dispense with the shield, merely removing the screws 53 and 54 will permit the shields being disconnected from the handle.
While the several parts of the mask have been shown as made separately and secured together, as for instance, the handle and shield just. referred to, as well as the domes other type of fastening members may be employed in any or all of the cases, or in some cases the fasteners may be wholly dispensed with and parts here shown as complete, pressed, or molded integrally. This contemplates the forming for instance, of the domes 22 and 23 integral with the body part of the mask and the invention is in no way limited by the showing of these parts as physical combinations.
Of course, the Welders mask, herein illustrated, may be modified in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereinafter claimed.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A welders mask comprising a body part, an arch located within the body part, a head band secured to the arch, said head band comprising a segment, a tubular part embracing the ends of the segment, and means tending to vary the lineal extent of the inserted segment within the tube.
2. A welders mask comprising a body part having a head band segment secured thereto, a tubular part embracing said segment and located at the posterior of the body part, said tubular part being provided with a slot, and means carried by the band segment inserted through the slot co-acting with means upon the exterior of the tubular part to vary the inserted lineal extent of the band segment within the tube.
3. A welders mask comprising a body part having a substantially semi-cylindrical anterior portion and rearwardly extending wings, a head band carried by the wings and comprising a band segment, and a tubular means external of the band adapted to vary the lineal extent of insertion.
7. A welders mask comprising a body a head band pivotall connected with the body, said head hand em odying a tubular section and a section slidably inserted into the tubular section, and means external of and in spaced from the band adapted'to vary the lineal extent of insertion.
8. A welders mask comprising a body a head band pivotally connected with the body, said head band combining an arcuate tubular section and a section having its ends inserted into the ends of the tubular section, and manualicontrolling means connecting'the inserted en s.
9. A welders mask comprising a body a head band pivotally connected with the bod said head band combining an arcuate tubular section having a slot and a section having its ends inserted into the ends of the tubular section, and manual controlling means operating in conjunction with the slot and connecting the inserted ends.
