Description
Patented Aug. 23, 1932 'unirse srarss Parser. orties GUSTAV JOHNSON, OF WEST ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED-CARR l FASTENER CORPORATION, MASSACHUSETTS orl CAMBRIDGE, Messner-wenns, A coaroim'rron or SEPARABLE FASTENER Application filed December 10, v1930. Serial No. 501,272.
My yinvention aims to provide improvements in separable fastener members of the hook and eye type.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure l is a cross-section through an installation embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the hook member installation Fig. 3 is an elevation of the hook-presenting plate; and
Fig. 4 is an elevation view of the eye7 member of the fastener.
Referring to the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration by the i drawing, I have shown a separable fastening means of the hook and eye type used as a three-side lock fastener installation. In Figure l I have shown the eye member l secured to a support 2, which may be the body of a motor vehicle, and a hook member 3 attached to a flexible carrying medium 4, which may be a side curtain to be secured to the body of the motor vehicle. VThe eye member is attached by mean-s of screws 5 and the hook7 member is attached by means of an attaching plate 6 having prongs 7 passing through the carrying medium 4 and through slots 8 in the hook member 3 and `bent against the plate port-ion thereof.
ly improved hook member is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, a portion of the center of which is pressed out to form a` hook 9 curved in transverse cross-section to strengthen it. also provided with an integral spring linger l0 which extends from the edge of the plate portion (Fig. 3) toward the center at the opposite side of the plate portion from that side at which the hook 9 is located and under` lies the hook 9, as best shown in Fig. 1. Both the hoolr 9 and the spring linger l() are angled with relation to the plate portion of the mem- .ber 3 and are spaced from each other.
The ey-e member is formed from sheet metal and has a hookengaging portion ll pressed from the center portion thereof and bent into the form of a loop outstanding from the plate portion, as shown in Figure l. The hook-engaging portion 11 is rolled from the rfhe hook member 3 is metal taken fromthe center of the ,plate portion ofthe member l to provide a circular cross-section. f
To attach the hook7 member 3 to the eye7 member 1, it is merely necessary to pull downwardly on the curtain 4 and slide the hook 9 under the hooksengaging portion l1, so that the hook-engaging portiony is received between the hook 9 and the spring'nger 10, as shown in Figure l. I he spring linger prevents rattle of the fastener members and holds the parts against accidental separation. When the fastener members are engaged they cannot be separated by outward or lateral stresses, except by a pull exerted upon the lower edge of the curtain to pull the hook 9 out of engagement with the hook-engaging 'portion l1. Thus, I have provided a simple,
inexpensive and durable so-called three-sideV soV ture, a fastener member located at one side of said supporting structure, an attaching member located at the other side of the supporting structure, attaching means extending from one of said members through the supporting structure and engaged with the other member to secure the parts of the installatio-n together, a hook member formed from the material of said fastener member within the periphery thereof and extending at an angle to the general plane of the fastener member and a spring linger forming a part of the fastener member and extending generally parallel to and in spaced relation from the hook member thereby to cooperate with the hook member to receive and hold an eye presented by a cooperating fastener member.
2. A separable fastening member comprising a plate member having a hook portion formed from the material of said plate member Within the periphery thereof and standing away from the plane of said plate member, Said hook portion forming an aperture 5 in said plate member, a spring nger formed integral with said plate member and eXtending from one edge of said plate member toward said aperture, said spring finger being located at the opposite side of the plate member from that side at which the hook portion is located and having a portion thereof extending through the aperture for cooperation with the hook portion and having itsv end terminating adjacent to that end of the hook where it joins the plate member.
K In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
GUSTAV JOHNSON.
