SPINDLE LOCK Filed Oct. 24, 1929 Patented Aug. 23, 1932V UNITED STAT-Es@ Pmi-:NT:V OFI-ics g CHARLES F. MEILINKfOF TOLEDO, OHIO l SPINDLE Loox Application filed October 24, 1929. Serial No. 402,017.l ,Y
This invention relates to locking'control. This invention has utility when incorporated in series with major or combinationlocks.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a safe having an embodiment of the invention incorporated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale on the 10 line Ill-II, Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III, Fig. 2.
Safe 1 is shown as having opening 2 in which is located door 3 swingable on hinges l5 to closed position at which handle 4 may be operated for throwing locking bolts 5v intoV position for retaining the vdoor closed. This locking bolt mechanism as thrown into hold-v the combination lock. As thus connected theV shaft isV effectivel through arm or crank 11 for throwing plunger 6 into the seat 7 or withdrawing the plunger from such seat 7. This shaft 10 extends through the door 3 centrally of indicator plate 12 on the door front, This indicator plate 12 provides seat 13 in which is operable scale 14 carried by vspindle 15. This operating spindle 15 is freely operable or rotatable at all times to bring its graduations 14 into position with i pointer 16 of the indicator plate 12.
Under the invention herein, this spindle 15 houses lock 17 having bolt 18 operable by withdrawable key 19 insertable into the keyhole 20. This lock 17 is fast or fixed with the spindle 15 and is effective when its bolt'18 is thrown as a connector to connect this spindle 15 with cup extension 20 fast with 5G the shaftV 10, so that this key may be withdrawn and this spindle 15 be'inthe normal assembly for directly operating the tubular mechanism 9, inthe housing 7 as may be `usual in combination lock operations.
However, hereunder,the key 19 may be operated to withdraw the bolt 18 thereby allowling the spindle 15 to rotate relatively to the cup member 20. This conditionV is permitted without the spindle becoming removable because nut 21 threaded into flange 22 on the inner side of the spindle 15 coacts with the enlarged cup'20 to hold this spindlef15 assembled with the shaft 10 although free to rotate relatively thereto. Furthermore, pressure eX- Y erted on the spindle 15 is not effective for any frictional gripping or holding action to be transmitted to the shaft 1()` due to the physical independence therebetween, nor is it possible or practicable by any twisting or distortion of thespindle 15 to effect any rotation whatsoever of the shaft 10 except through the locking bolt 18, as registering in port 23 of the i cup 20.
It is accordingly seen that the key 10 may be withdrawn with the spindle 15 released so that no manipulationwhatsoever is effective for unlocking the bolt mechanism by withdrawing the plunger 6. This rendering ineffective of the tumbler mechanism may even occur with the plunger 6 withdrawn. There is accordinglyv precluded any unauthorized tampering, either for locking or unlocking. This is a feature of exceptional value in chain store, theatre, filling station and like installations where many people may have casual access and it is desired to limit the control of the locking mechanism to one individual who y is in possession of the key. Y
What is claimed and it'is desired to secure by Letters Patent is l l In safe door locking equipment wherein there is a safe door, locking both mechanisms for the door, a lever handle for operating the mechanism, a combination lock for releasing the mechanism to permit operation of the lever handle, said combination lock having tumblers and a tumbler 'operating shaft through the door to the tumblers, the comf bination including said shaft of a combination lock spindle concealing the shaft, an index adjacent the spindle, and aJ key lock mounted concentrically of the spindle, said key lock being operableby the key to leave the spindle connected With or disconnected from the shaft, whereby with said shaft con- Y nected thereto, said spindle is operable relatively to the index to release the mechanism to permit movement of Athe leverV handle to shift the door locking bolt mechanism to door unlocking position.
In Witness whereof I ail-1X.my,"'signatureV CHARLES F. MEILVINK.
