UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. LOUISE DEMOREST AND THOMAS W. G. COOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO W. JENNINGS DEMOREST, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCKING-SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,992, dated February 6, 1 877; application filed December 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Mme. E. LOUISE DEM- OREST and THOMAS W. G. 000K, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stocking-Suspender, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists in the combination of a clasp-pinattached to the ends of an elastic strap by means of clips, and a combined clasp-pin and buckle that receives the elastic strap, which is double.
Referring to the drawing, which is a side elevation, A A' are clips, punched from sheet metal, one part being perforated at a, to receive the points 12, formed upon the other part, and when the clip is folded together upon the end of the elastic strap D, the points I) pass through the strap and the perforations a, and are bent down so as to hold the clip and B is a pin formed of spring-wire, and having a shank that is embraced by the clip, which is set down closely upon it, and a coil at c, which terminates in a pointed tongue, 01. C is an arm formed on the clip A, and bent over to receive the point of the pin-tongue. E is a pin that is attached to a plate, F, upon which is formed an arm. 0, that is bent over to re ceive the point of the pin. The plate F is also bent around the loop of the buckle G.
The elastic strap D is doubled at or near its center, and the loop so formed is engaged by the buckle G. The clasp-pins at the lower ends of the elastic strap are fastened into the stocking, and the clasp-pin that is attached to the buckle is fastened to the under garments.
The distance between the upper and lower clasp-pins is adjusted by drawing the loop of the elastic strap more or less through the buckle. 4
We have described the suspender as applied to stockings, but it may be used for supporting other garments with equal advantage.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by- Letters Patent 1. The clips A, provided with the perforations a, points 1), arm C, and pin B combined, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A stocking-supporter, consisting of the clips A, plus B, elastic strap D, buckle C, plate F, and pin E, substantially as shown and described.
