WELL BOTTOM Application filed J'uly 5, 1929. Seria1"NO. 376,198."
t Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the character described designed to be attached to the lower end of a well screen and embodying a sectional body having one or more back pressure valves therein and of such construction that the number of valves employed may be varied as desired.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described having a valve body with a novel t-ype of back pressure valve therein, designed to permit the flow of fluid downwardly through the body and to prevent the back low thereof, and equipped with a screen for protecting said valve and a safety plug for completely closing said body, when desired, to cut off all flow of iuid through said body.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to cer-` tain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- Figure l shows avertical sectional view of the device showing the wash pipe therein. Figure 2 shows a side view of the device, partly in section, showing the safety plug therein, and
Figure .3 shows a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form thereof. Y
Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral l designates a well screen to the lower end of which the device is to be attached and the numerals 2, 2 designate intermediate sections of the body. Any desired number of these sections may be employed depending on the number of back pressure valves desired. The sections 2 are similar, the upper end of each section being screwed into the lower end 'of' the section above and the outer surface of theassembled sections beingv flush. Attached tol the lower end. of i the lower sectiony 2 there is the conventional guide plug 8, whose outer surface is also iush with the adjacent section 2. Screwed Vunto the upper end of the upper section 2 Vu: i
thereis theftubular top section t whose upper 'n end is internally threaded to receive the reduced externally threaded lower end of the tubular nipple 5 into the upper end of which Y the lower end of the screen vl'fis threaded. Within each section'2 .there is screwed a lvalve cage as 6 which comprises the annular valve'seat 7 and the depending spider 8,1cage vlike in form. Screwed withthecoupling t there'is a'zvalve cage'9 :embodying the an-y nular Lseat lOfv and ,the depending,v Cage' like spider `1l. The cage 9 hasian 'upstanding f.
sleeve 12into which'the 'lower-end, of the tubular perforated screen 13T is screwed.- Y Associated with the respective seat 7, 10 are theJ similar downwardly Opening` valves 14 which have'the upstanding wing-like guides 15 that work throughvtheseats above. `These valves are seated on thecoil springsA 16 which are vconnfed vwithin and supported by'the corresponding valve spider. `Each valve has a depending stem asl7 which fits withinfthe upper end of thelcorresponding coil spring 16 and the lower ends offth'ese springs surround the upperends of thevbolts 18 which ,arethreaded through the'lower vends of the y.
corresponding spiders. a
,he fva-lves 14CV are thus held yieldingly againstv their corresponding seats but are permitted to openfto permit fluid to passv .downwardly through thev body and y out through the lower end of the :guide plug 3. Screwed within the upper end ofthe 'nipa vet plef there is a bushing y19, having internal coarse threads Vandv having' an f upwardly flared. seatabove said threads. v i l In use the device vis attachedoto the lower end ofthe screen-to be set inai wellbore. When the screen it s-et itis usually necessary to lwash said Screen and in order to accomplish this, the wash pipe 20 is let down into with its external shoulder 22 seton theflared seat 23 of said bushing. Water is then forced down through said wash pipe 20 and is excluded from passing outwardly through said screen and is forced to pass. on downwardly through said screen 13 opening said Y valves 14 and passing on out through the guide plug 3 and up around the well screen Y l to wash the same. The screen 13 prevents fluidV be excluded from passing intothe welll screen v1 eXcept through the screen surface thereof and for that purpose a safety plug as 24 has been provided. This plug may be lower end adapted to intermesh with the ythreads of said bushing said plug being shaped to t closely against said seat, the upper end of the plug being tubular and having a wall port, and also having external threads pitched reversely with respect to the lower end threads. v
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification. y

vattached by lef-t hand'threads 25 to a string I -ofr pipe and let down through the screen 1. The lowerend of this plug has coarse right hand threads 26 which may be screwed into fthe bushing 19 and above said threads has an annular tapering seat 27 adapted to form a tight joint with the seat 23. When this plug 24has been screwed home the string `of pipe through which it is manipulated may be detached by a continuedk turning to the right and it will be unscrewed from said plug by reason of the left handthrea'ds'25. The upper end of the plug 24 is hollo-W and has an inlet port 28 so that fluid can enter through said port and pass up through said plug into the string of pipe usedfor setting the plug so as to permit said string to- `fill with water to prevent its collapsingfrom y t the pressure from the outside.`r This safety v plug 24 Vwill prevent inlet of fluid into the lower end of the well screen in case the valves .14 should for any reason be held open by clogging material. l y
In the form'shown in Figure V3 the connecting nipple and lscreen 13 are dispensed with the upwardly flared bell-shaped nipple 29 is screwed in the upper end of the sleeve 12 and when it is desired to wash the'screen as above stated the wash pipe 20may be lowered into said nipple 29 and seated therein andthe well screen then washed in the manner hereinabove stated. l I l Preferred forms of the' invention have been villustrated in thepdrawing and described `in the specication by way of illustration only f @o while the broad principle'ofthe invention will be defined by the appended claim` What we claim is: 1 v l .Y In a well bottom the combination with a casing of an annular bushing fixed therein and having internal threads and an upwardly flared seat, a plug having threads on its
