Description

July 26,1932. w. c. HlERlNG BAG FRAME FASTENEH Filed May 5, 1950 INVENT (1% ATTORNEY Patented July 26, 1932 warren STATES arent orricr.
-lfi'ILLTlIAlVZ C. HIERING, OF NEW'ARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T J. E. MERGOTT (30., OF
NEVIARK, 1-3. (7., A CDRPOEATIGN OF DELA 'JV BAG FRAME FASTENEB Application filed May 5,
frames, it is often necessary to provide ornamentations in greatvariety, and inasmuch as the production of separate ornamentations is expensive, it is highly desirable that means be provided by which various ornamentations may be attached to bag frames Without materially affecting the manufacturing thereof.
It is therefore, an object of this invention to provide a bag fastening device which is pcculiarly adapted to accommodate a large variety of ornamentations without necessitating material changes in structure of the bag fastener itself.
A further object is the provision of a bag 9 fastening device which may be conveniently and readily applied to bag frames of standard types.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and ar rangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view showing a frame having the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 represents a cross sectional view showing the manner in Which the bag fastener is applied to the bag frame, and
Figure 3 represents a sectional View taken on. the line 3-8'of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a bag frame having the two channel members 5 and 6 hinged together in any common or well rnovvn manner. Mounted on the frame memher 6 is a fastener, preferably a metal tube 7, which be of any desired or convenient shape or material, having integral down Wardlv proiecting portions 8 which pass 40 t t i through apertures in. frame member 6, said portions 8 being bent around a torsion spring 9. movement of the latter being limited by the side Walls of frame member 6.
Positioned in the ends of tube 7 are plugs 11 and 14 having enlarged heads 10 and 13 1930. Serial ll'o. 449,929.
respectively, said heads having a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the tube 7. The plug 11 has embedded therein a rod 12, the free end of Which is threaded so that it may engage the internally threaded portion of plug 14, as shown in Figure 2.
The tube 7 is provided with the aperture 15, normally positioned over the frame memher 5, to receive the catch 16 mounted on frame member 5, to hold the two frame members together. The frame members may be released by forcing the tube 7 away from the catch 16 against the torsional action of spring 9.
As will be seen in Figure 2, the tube 7 and the arrangement of the plugs 11 and 14 enable the use of a variety or ornamentations Without necessitatin any change in the bag fastening structure. For example the plugs 11 and 14 may be of any color, and the heads 10 and 13 may be of various shapes and sizes. Also the tube 7 may be of various lengths and it is readily seen that the structure herein presented is unusually adapted to wide application of ornamentations.
It will also be seen that the manufacture of the device is simple, efiicient and inexpensive, and the ornamentations may be readily assembled on the tube 7. Also the structure of plugs 11 and 14 enable the replacing of such ornamental features from time to time as may suit the fancy of the trade.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications Without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a bag frame fastener, a tube of substantially uniform cross-section throughout its length, a pair of plugs insorted into opposite ends of said tube, each plug having a head of substantially the same cross-section as the tube, one
of said plugs being internally threaded, a rod carried by the other plug, said rod being threaded at its end to engage the internally threaded plug, and elements attached to the plugs and abutting the ends of the tube, to
snugly draw the plug heads in abutment with the opposite ends of said tube.
This specification signed this 30th day-0f April, 1930.
