Description

J. H. JOHNSON.
ATTACHMENTS run BOOTS Am SHOES. No.186,843; v Patented Jan. 30. 1877 JAMES H. JOHNSON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR.OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO LEWIS A. OSBORN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 86,843, dated January 30, 1877; application filed November 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. JOHNSON, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Shoes, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a certain device or attachment, the nature and object of which is to protect the lower back portion of pantaloons, boots, shoes, stockings, 850., from being spattered with mud or muddy water by the wearer while walking through muddy streets or pools of muddy water.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the nature and character of my invention, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a shoe having my attachment or shield secured thereto by suitable straps, &c.- Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the shield or protector detached from the boot or shoe, and Fig. 3 represents a shoe having a shield permanently attached thereto, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention I construct a shield or protector, A, of a shape and form substantially as shown and indicated in the drawing, and, when designed to be attached to and detached from the boot or shoe, provided with suitable straps b, 0, &c., or other convenient t'astenings, such as springs, screws, elastics, 850.
In order to maintain the protector at a proper angle from the heel of the boot or shoe, and prevent it from drooping, which is very essential, it is provided with a flange or projection, 01, as indicated in Fig. 2, which effectually accomplishes the object desired.
It will be observed, however, that the device may, if preferred, be rigidly and permanently secured to a boot or shoe, and so form a part thereof, as indicated in Fig. 3, and that the protector, occupying a position within the lower part of the pants-leg, holds out the latter away from the shoe, and is concealed, while the mud or water thrown up by the heel strikes the under side of the protector without contact with the pants.
I do not claim, broadly, the combination of a shoe or boot and a metallic wing or plate but I claim.
The plate A, arranged upon and combined with a boot or shoe above the heel, in a position to be concealed by and to hold back the pants-leg, as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. JOHNSON.
Witnesses:
