ASSIG'NOR TO FIRM NEUERIBUBGSGHE VERVJALTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT' G. M. B. H., OF COLOGNE-ON-THE-RHINE, GEBIVIANY MACHINE FOR MAKING CIGARETTES Application filed July 17, 1930, Serial No. 468,697, and in Germany December 3, 1928.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for making cigarettes, and more particularly in the apparatus for feeding the tobacco.
Heretofore tobacco feeding apparatus for machines for manufacturing cigarettes have been constructed in which the tobacco contained within a receptacle is made loose and distributed at its surface by means of a rotary roller or drum provided with spikes. In one construction a rotary drum has been provided the bearings of which are stationary relatively to the tobacco receptacle, and which is provided with spikes or needless adapted to be retracted into the drum while rotating the same, a plurality of rollers being provided within the receptacle. In another construction a rotary drum provided with spikes has been provided above the feed roller, for supplying a layer of tobacco of uniform thickness and compactness. These are objectionable for the reason that the tobacco is distributed and made loose at one part of the receptacle.
The object of the improvements is to provide a machine of this class in which a roller carrying spikes or needles is adapted to be moved to or fro across the surface of the tobacco in horizontal or substantially horizontal direction with its axis parallel.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawing,
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatical sectional elevation showing the feeding mechanism, and
Fig. 2 is a liagram showing the electric circuit controlling the signalling device.
W'ithin receptacle containing the tobacco to be supplied to the cigarette making devices of the machine a drum or roller provided with spikes or needles 16 is rotatably mounted with its shaft 14 on two parallel levers 13 and 13 keyed to a rock shaft 20, the said roller or drum being parallel to a roller 1 provided with needles and rotating in the direction of the arrow as and a roller 2 rotating in the direction of the arrow 3 and cooperating with the roller 1 for stripping the tobacco therefrom. The rock shaft is mounted by means of brackets 12 on a suitable part of the machine for example on aboard 6 rockingly mounted on a shaft 11. The said board is adapted to be rocked to and fro from a shaft 9 through the intermediary-of a crank 8 and a link 7, the said shaft being adapted to be rotated the direction of the arrow 2 means of suitable gearing such as a pulley The spikes or needles 16 of the drum or roller 15 are inclined rearwardly as com pared to the direction of the'rotation of the drum indicated in Fig. 1 by the arrow 0, and such rotary movement is imparted to the drum from a shaft 36 by means of a belt 3 trained on a pulley 4 keyed to the shaft 36 and a pulley 5 keyed to a shaft 28, a chain and sprocket gearing comprising a sprocket wheel 27 keyed to the shaft 28, a sprocket wheel and a chain 26 trained on the said sprocket wheels, a chain and sprocket mechanism'comprising a sprocket wheel 23 connected with the sprocket wheel 25, a sprocket wheel 21 rotatable on the sh aft 26 and a chain 22 trained on the sprocket wheels 23 and 21 and a chain and sprocket mechanism com prising a sprocket wheel 19 connected with the sprocket wheel 21, a sprocket wheel 17 keyed to the shaft 1 1 and achain 18 trained on the sprocket wheels 19 and 17. To the board 6 or another part of the machine an arm 29 is'secured by means of which the rocking movement of the levers 13 downwardly is I controlled and preferably the said arm 29 is shiftably mounted for regulating the extent of the downward movement of the levers 13. On arms 136 made integral with the levers 13 a brush 30 is mounted which is disposed substantially radially of the roller 15 and extends an arm 37 secured to or made integral with the lovers 13 or 13 a weighted body 31 is mounted. Above the said body. contacts 33 and 34 are fixed to an insulating block 31 which are included in a circuit comprising a battery 38 and a signalling device 35, the said contacts 33 and 3 1 being normally out of ento the surface of the drum. On
gagement with each other for opening the circuit.
1 The operation of the apparatus is as folows:
By the crank 8 and the link 7 rocking movement is imparted to the board 6 so that the roller 15 is moved to and fro and substantially in horizontal direction across the surface of the tobacco and simultaneously it is rotated in the direction of the arrow o. Thereby the tobacco within the receptacle is distributed and made loose. The brush 3O combs any tobacco which might stick between the spikes of the roller 15 from the said spikes, and it prevents transmission of the tobacco from the left hand part of the receptacle to the right and to the drum 2. The roller 15 bears on the surface of the tobacco with a pressure controlled by the weighted body 31 adapted to be shifted on the arm 37, and the arm 29 limits the downward movement of the said roller as the tobacco is removed from the receptacle. If the roller has sunk to a certain position the weighted body 31 engages the contact 33 and forces the same into engagement with the contact 34 and to the signalling apparatus such as a lamp 35.
r If desired a gate or the like controlling the supply of tobacco to the receptacle may be provided.
I claim 1. Means for supplying tobacco to cigarette making machines, comprising a rotary drum located above the tobacco being supplied and adapted to loosen said tobacco, and means for moving said drum across the surface of said tobacco substantially in a hori zontal direction.
2. Means for supplying tobacco to cigarette making machines, comprising a receptacle for tobacco, a rotary drum located above the tobacco and adapted to loosen the latter, a frame carrying said drum and rockably mounted on one of the walls of said receptacle, and means for rocking said wall in a direction to cause the drum to move across the surface of the tobacco.
3. Means for supplying tobacco to cigarette making machines, comprising a receptacle having one wall thereof movable, a rotary drum located above the tobacco being supplied and adapted to loosen said tobacco, a frame carrying said drum and rockably mounted on said movable wall, means for rocking said wall in a direction to cause the drum to move'across the surface of the tobacco, and a weighted body connected with said frame and shiftable thereon for regulating the pressure of the drum on the tobacco.
4. Means for supplying tobacco to cigarette making machines, comprising a receptacle having one wall thereof movable, a rotary drum located above the tobacco being supplied to loosen the same, a frame Carrying said drum and rockably mounted on said signature.
