The screw shell 31 is adapted. to be mounted inthe socket portion 14 of the assembled body, as best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. For the purpose of mounting this shell 31 by the act of assembling the body sections A and B, the latter are provided with lugs 32 which preferably are diametrically opposed, and the shell is provided with registering apertures 33 fOrreceiving the lugs.
' ,The side outlet 15, as stated heretofore, is 'formed by suitably shaped projections carried by the body sections A and B. Openings 34 are formed in the end face of this side outlet 15 for receiving the blades of a plug \ 35 of the type illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 11 The outlet 15 is provided with the plug terminal receiving recesses 36, which register with the openings 34, and the inside face or wall of the section B is. provided with the ribs 36a and 366 whose functions will presently appear.
An opening 37 is formed partly in each of the end faces of the sections A and B which occur at the extremity of the boss 13. This opening accommodates-the ribbon-like conductor 38 which is bent over at itsouter end 38a to form a contact. The inner end of the conductor is anchored at 39 to the thickened wall portion 18 and is connected by the anchoring means to the stationary-contact 40 which forms apart of the pull chain switch mechanism. A second contact 41 isconnected to anchoring means-42 which likewise is carried by the-thickened wall'portion 18. This anchoring means 42 connects to the switch contact 41 a'center contact 43 located within the screw shell 31. The male ring 0 electrically contacts with a conductor spring 44 which extends lengthwise through the chambero17 and around the rib 36a to be connected by a rivet or the'like 45 to the screw shell 31. The end of the conductor 44, beyond the rivet 45, is provided with a return bend 46 to form a plug terminal contact 47 arranged within the recess 36 in line with one of p, the openings 34. It now will be seen that-the connecter may be threaded into an ordinary light socket by means of the boss 13 and its encircling ring C. The circuit for the female shell 31 will be controlled by the pull chain switch mechanism illustrated. The contacts 47 and 49 registering with the openings 34 in the side outlet will be free from all control by the said switch mechanism. The connecter will permit of a bulb being threaded into the shell 31 and controlled by the pull chain switch 99 mechanism while a lamp cord, or the like, may be connected to the side outlet and be provided with a closed circuit irrespective of the condition of the pullchainswitch mechanism. 7 Figure 5 illustrates a slightly modified form'of connecter in which the boss 13 is dispeI lsed with and a cap or equivalent annular orring like member 50 is threadedly connected with the separate portions forming the 100 body 10a. This'cap 50 is provided with an opening 51 for accommodating the wires 52 which are connected by screws 53 to the conductors 38, 44 and 48 of the mechanism disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4.
The pull chain switch mechanism in the structure shown in Figure 5 may be the same as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. A female screw shell and a side outlet similar to those illustrated'in Figs. 3 and 4 also may beprolar member or ring which may be threaded to engage both sections, while a single fastening locks both members near the opposite end against slippage or separation. In -assembling the device the body section B may have the pull chain switch mechanism assembled thereonas well as the center plug contact 43 of the screw shell 31, together with the contact 3838a for the plug end of the device.
1 The spring conductor member 44 which is carried by the screw shell contact 31 may then 13) be placed in position so that the end 44a lies in recess 44?) while the bent terminal finger 47 for one of the blades of the push-plug, lies in one of the recesses 36, and the screw shell itself engages over one of the lugs 32. The other spring conductor member 48 may then be fitted into the space between the rib 36b and the body so that the end 48a thereof forms a part of the center contact for the plug end of the device while the portion 49 lying within the other of the recesses 36 constitutes the second push-plug terminal. When the various parts are assembled, the cover section A maybe placed in position and the screw threaded ring C may be threaded onto the threaded end portions of the sections A and B to hold them together and at the same time make an electrical connection between the ring C and the end 44a of the spring contact member 44. When the rivet, eyelet or equivalent fastening E is placed through the aperture ears 15a, the entire assembly will be held in place to complete the device. The lugs 32 which enter the openings 33 in the screw shell contact not only hold that member in place but also prevent its rotation during the screwing in and out of the lamp bulb, and take the strain ofi of the connection between the screw shell and the conductor to which it is attached.
WVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An electrical connecter, including longitudinal complemental housing-shell sections of molded insulating material, a socket formed at one end of said members, a screw shell contact within the socket, a center contact within the screw shell, said housing shell having a side outlet, side outlet terminals arranged in said side outlet, a conductor for one of said terminals connected with the screw shell, a ring carried by one end of the housing shell sections and electrically connected with said last named conductor, the other of said side outlet terminals including a conductor portion passing through the end of the plug portion of the device and constituting a center contact thereof, an electrical connection between the center contact of the said plug portion of the device and the center contact of the socket independent of the connection of either of said side outlet terminals with the plug portion of the device, and a pull switch arranged in said last named connection.
2. A combination pull chain socket and current. tap connecter including a pair of complemental longitudinally matched housing-shell sections of molded insulating material, said housing-shell provided at one end with a plug part, at its opposite end with a lamp socket, and at the side with a current tap side outlet, a screw shell and a center con tact within the lamp socket part of the housing-shell sections, a contact ring and a center contact carried by the plug part of the housing-shell and coaxial with the lamp socket screw shell and center contact, respectively, a pull chain switch mounted within the housing-shell in circuit controlling relation to said center contacts, and contact elements for the current tap side outlet which are separate and independent from the switch and are directly and permanently connected to the plugcontact ring and center contact, respectively.
3. A multiple tap socket comprising a longitudinally split insulating housing of matchingsections formed with an enclosed intermediate switch chamber with enclosed side outlet chambers, and with partition walls at the side of'the switch chamber having registering conductor grooves, said housing being also formed at one end with an attaching plug having main wire line terminals, and at its opposite end with a lamp socket having lamp terminals, a pull switch mechanism enclosed in the switch chamber, switch contacts connecting respectively with a plug terminal and with a lamp terminal, side outlet plug contacts each separately housed in one of the side outlet chambers and each having a metal conductor connecting with one of the plug contacts and clamped by the housing sections within one of said conductor grooves, one of said metal conductors having a metallic connection with one of said lamp terminals.
4. A multiple tap socket comprising a longitudinally split insulating housing of matching, sections formed with an enclosed inter mediate switch chamber and interior side outlet chambers, said housing being also formed at one end with an attaching plug having main wire line terminals and at its opposite end with a socket having a screw shell and a center contact, a pull switch mechanism in the switch chamber, switch contact elements connected respectivel with a plug terminal and with the center p ug contact of the lamp socket, side outlet contacts housed in the side outlet chambers, and a pair of metal conductors within the housing both located entirely at one side of the switch mechanism, one of said conductors connecting a side contact with one of the terminals of the attaching plug and the other being connected directly with the said screw shell and another of the terminals of the attaching plug.
