A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE HINGED BOX Application filed May 31, 1929. Serial No. 367,272.
This invention relates to folded boxes, and more particularly to a telescoping box having an end which may be readily opened for the insertion or removal of articles.
The invention particularly applies to a type of box which is adapted to be stacked, for example on the shelves of a store and provides for the removal of articles from the box without disturbing the stack.
The invention provides an outer open ended cover member and an inner telescoping member having a hinged end. The telescoping member is normally secured inside of the cover member with the hinged end in closed position. When it is desired to remove the contents of the box the end is swung open about its lower edge and is held in partly open position while the desired article is being Withdrawn from or inserted into the box.
3 Means are also provided for completely opening the end member when desired to afford unimpeded access to the interior.
The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Y Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box showing the end in partly open position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the telescoping member showing the end in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the telescoping member may be formed;
Fig. l is a side elevation of the box partly in section showing the construction of the hinged end;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4; showing 60 the end in partly open position;
Fig. 6 is an end view of the box shown in Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the box showing the manner of gripping the side flaps for closing the end; and
Fig. 8 is an end view of the box in the position of Fig. 7.
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the following description and in the I claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Referring to'the drawings more in detail, the invention is shown as applied to a box comprising an open end cover member formed with a plurality of side members 10 which may be stamped from a single blank r and folded into rectangular form. One of the side members 10 is provided with a flap 11 which is bent into engagement with anotherof said side members and secured for .holding the cover in assembled position. The telescoping member which is adapted to be inserted within the above described cover member is formed from a blank shown in Fig. 3 and comprises a bottom 15, sides 16, and end pieces 17 and 18. Sides 16 are provided with side flaps 19, and ends 17 and 18 i with respect to bottom 15. Flanges 19 are then bent inwardly and are secured to the inside of end 17 and end flap 20 is bent over interiorly of the box and is secured to the inside of flaps 19. Wings 22 are then attached to end 18 by positioning flaps 23 interiorly of said end member and bending flap 21 over said Wings and into engagement therewith. Flaps 19, 20, 21 and 23 are secured by convenient means such as glue. A hole 24: is
formed in end 18 and flap 21 for the purpose of providing convenient means for gripping J the end when the box is in assembled position.
After the parts have been secured as above pointed out, end 18 may be bent into upstanding position and wings 22 bent inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, after which the telescoping member may be inserted within the cover member to form a closed box. ings 22 are preferably formed sufficiently long so that points 25 bear against the cover member as shown in Fig. 1 for limiting the pivotal movement of end 18 and holding said end in partly open position. The box may be completely opened, however, by forcing tips of wings 22 into engaging position as shown in Fig. 8 whereby clearance is provided between said tips and the outer cover member. For again closing the end it is only necessary to grip the wings as shown in Fig. 7, forcing them into engaging position after which the end may be bent about its lower edge into closed position. The tips of wings 22 engage with the inner surface of sides 16 as shown in Fig. 5 and serve as guiding means during closing of the end.
In the above described box it is to be noted that the end may be opened to permit removal of articles without sliding the telescoping member or otherwise disturbing the position of the box. This feature is particularly important in cases where a large number of such boxes are formed in a stack, since the weight supported by each box would force the cover member into firm engagement with the telescoping member and impede sliding movement therebetween. The end may be brought into partly open position by a single movement of the hand, wings 22 preventing the same from being inadvertently brought into full open position. When full open position is required, however, it may readilybe obtained by bending said wings inwardly, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, whereby they are released from engagement with the cover member and the end is permitted to swing about its lower edge as a hinge.
Vhile certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the. invention.
TVhat is claimed is:
1. In a telescoping box, an open ended cover member, an open top member telescoped therein, said telescoped member having a hinged end wall, wings secured to said hinged end wall, said wings having portions adapted to engage with said cover member to hold said end wall in partly open position, said portions being adjustable to permit said end wall to be brought into full open position.
2. In a telescoping box, an open ended cover member, an open top member telescoped therein, said telescoped member having a fixed closed end and a hinged end wall, wings normally secured to said hinged end wall, said wings contacting with said cover member to hold said end in partly open position, said wings being adjustable inwardly to permit said end wall to be brought into full open position.
3. A box adapted to be placed in stacked relationship, said box having side walls, an end wall hinged to a side wall and adapted to pivot outwardly, and wings hinged to the side edges of said end wall and pivoting inwardly, said wings having portions adapted to normally contact a side wall of said box to hold said end in partly open position, said portions being of such length that when said wings are pivoted inwardly, said portions will avoid the side wall engageable thereby and permit said end wall to be moved into full open position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
