UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo JOHN L. K RAUSER, OF TYLERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOCKS AND STOCKINGS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. l S6,39S,dated January 16, 1877; application tiled March 11, 1876.
To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN L. KRAUSER, of
Tylersburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Socks and Stockings; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a-full,cl`ear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
lt is well known that, on account of their absorbent power and other physical qualities, which render them agreeable `to the feet, particularly thesoles of the same, cotton and wool are, in proportion to their cost, the most serviceable materials for the manufacture of socks and stockings; and they have acquired a world-wide popularity on this account. It is also well' known that the heels or toes, or both heels and toes, of cotton and woolen socks and stockings first wear out, renderingsuch hosiery useless, unless repaired, long before the legs and the principal portion ofthe feet have become worn to' any great extent.
The object of my invention is to improve i `hosiery,`the principal material of which is cot- *ton orwool, by knitting upon, or otherwise uniting to the cotton or woolen Vfabrics which form the legs and the principal'parts ofthe fcet,toes and heels of linen or hemp. Such toes and heels are "not intended to extend far enough under the most tender part of the soles l of the feet to detract from the superior comfort ofthe cotton or Woolen fabric, or to add y i materially to the cost ofthe hose; but they l will greatly increase' the durability of the hose.
My invention, therefore, consists in a stocking or sock having the leg and the principal part of the foot of the same, made of cotton or wool, with a heel or a toe of linen or hemp, or having both a heel and toe of linen or hemp, united to the other parts.
The accompanying drawing represents a sock comprising my invention;
L represents the leg of the sock, and F the principal part of the foot of the same, both of which are knit or woven of cotton or of woolen yarn. T represents the toe of the sock, knit or woven of linen or hemp yarn, andjoined to the aforesaid cotton portions L and F by knitting or otherwise. H represents the heel ofthe sock or stocking, also knit or woven of linen or hemp, and joined to the cotton lportio'ns L and F by knitting or otherwise.
I am aware that stockings have been strengthened by knitting in the toes and heels of the saine additional threads-Moffthe same material as that of which the other por-
