This application is a division of my application Serial Number 373,705, filed June I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front elevation;

Figure 5 is a plan view of the work support carriage and associated parts;
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure l;
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure l, illustrating the employment of a horizontal support normally fixed, in combination with a removable support adapted to be positioned at an angle to the normally iixed support.

Referring first to the form of Figures 1 to 6, A generally indicates any suitable base or frame member, mounted upon the supports A1. Mounted on the base A is the motor B with its pulley B1. B2 is a rotary knife with which is associated the pulley B3 about which passes the belt B4, whereby rotation of the motor drives the knife.
C generally indicates the guard plate for the front of the knife, the arcuate edge of which, C1,penetrates the recess B5 in the frontof the knife. It will be seen from Figure 2 that the axis of the knife .is somewhat tilted in order to throw the cutting arc forwardly into the plane of the. guard plate C.
D generally indicates a gauge plate structure which may be moved, in any suitable manner, for example by rotation of the control knob Dl, toward and away from the cutting plane in order to adjust the thickness of the slices.
E generally indicates a work support carriage mounted for example on the track El. -It is provided with a depending portion E2 in guiding relationship with the guide track E2. A certain adjustment of the carriage is possible, about the rail El, by adjust-ment of the screw threaded elements E4 one of which engages each side of the track E2. I find it desirable to provide a work support which may be set at various angles. I have therefore formed the carriage E with a plurality of slots E5 E6 extending downwardly from its upper face. The slot'E5 is illustrated as vertical and the slot E6 as inclined from the vertical, the two slots, however, being closely adjacent at the upper face of the carriage and diverging downwardly therefrom.
G generally indicates a work supporti which includes the main work supporting faceG1 and a flange G2 upwardly extending from the edge thereof remote from thevcutting edge of the knife when the carriage is at the Vbeginning of the cutting excursion. G3 is a pusher plate which may be mounted upon the member G as by the guide pins G4 which penetrate the. aperturedV bosses- 4or lugs G5.
GG is any suitable handle for the pusher plate. Secured to the bottom of the member G and depending downwardly'therefrom is the member G7 adapted to penetrateselectively either the slot E5 or the slot EG. The member G7 may be bifurcated, as shown in Figure l to straddle the track E1 which penetrates both slots. G8 indicates a locking Vor set screw so positioned in relation to thel slots E5 E6 as to be adapted for locking engagement with the member G7 when it is inserted in either one of the slots. f
Referring to Figure. 7, I illustrate a slight variation of the form of the other figures, in which there ismounted upon the carriage E a generally horizontal'meat supporting member .or plate indicated as K, with the abutment K1 shown at right angles toit andin y vertical position. The plate K and the carriage E are slotted as at E5 E6 to receive the member G7.

The use and operation of my invention are 15 as follows In slicing machines of the type herein described it is desirable to have a Work support, movable With the carriage across the face of the knife vhich suonort is ad`usta- 2U ble in relation to the carriage. Some articles,
such as bread, bacon and thelilie are best slicedWhen resting upon a broad horizontal surface such as that of themeinbertl. TWhei'i the'meat support is tilted in the position in which it is shown in Figure 7, or in dotted line in Figure l,.tlie space is insufiicient to receive a piece of bacon for de-rinding or a piece of bread for de-crusting. I obtain both results by providing a Worksupport which may, at the election ofthe operator, be positioned in horizontal position or in inclined position.
