Description

- J. KLEIN June 7, 1932.
TOBACCO PIPE Filed April 6, 1951 anvemboz Patented June 7, 1932 UNITED STATES JOHN KLEIN, F BROOKLYN, NFNV YORK TOBACCO PIPE Application filed April 6,
This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a readily removable cover for the plpe bowl, so that the pipe L may be used if so desired without the cover or the cover may be placed thereon and securely held in place on the bowl, if the pipe with the burning tobacco is to be placed into a pocket or the like when the user is entering a place where smoking is prohibited, thus saving a considerable quantity of tobacco which is wasted in using uncoveredpipes.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a cover for the bowls of tobacco pipes which will be securely held in its bowl closing position, and which cannot accidentally come off the bowl if for instance the pipe is placed on a table, and thus prevent soiling of table covers or the like. 1
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a smoking pipe the upper margin of the bowl of which is equipped with one or more locking pins or screws adapted to firmly engage in suitable recesses of the cover, said pins or screws serving as a protecting means for the bowl when the tobacco ashes are to be removed therefrom by the usual rapid striking of the bowls margin against an object frequently being the cause of brealn'ng and otherwise damaging the bowl.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a tobacco pipe having a cover for its bowl pivoted about a pin entering a vertical bore in the bowl while a diagonally oppositely disposed pin on the upper margin of the bowl engages a groove on the undersideof the cover.
A still further object of my invention is the to provision of a tobacco pipe having a removable cover provided with a recess having bevelled walls adapted to be engaged by an angularly disposed finger pointing in a desired direction.
Other objects of my invention are the provision of a tobacco pipe the stem and mouthpiece of which have engaging tubes formed therewith, one for the reception of a saliva absorbing material while a chamber formed 5 in the stem surrounding said tubes is adapted upper margin of the bowl 1931. Serial No. 527,924.
to contain a removable element saturated with a deodorizing agent to prevent the saturation of the stem with tobacco odor, so that the pipe will at all times taste and smell sweet, as a ready renewal of this agent is readily effected.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically defined in the apcc pended claims. 7
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
' Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a pipe constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, parts of the bowl being broken away. J
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a pipe and bowl with the cover thereon.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of p a pipe and modified form of cover.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view of a bowl cover.
Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of a pipe showin the interior construction. Fig. lis a cross-section on line 8-8 of Fig ure 6.
Fig. 8 is a detail view of a deodorizer element.
As illustrated, a pipe having a bowl 10, stem 11 and mouth-piece or bit 12, has formed in the wall of the bowl 10 a vertical bore 13 adapted to receive a pin 14 formed with the cover 15 for the bowl or secured thereto in any suitable manner, as at16. At a point di- 185 agonally opposite to the pin 14, the cover 15 has a recess 17 formed in its margin adapted to engage a pin or screw 18 in the wall of the bowl. Another recess 19 having bevelled 'walls is formed in cover 15 near the pivot point of the same and is adapted to be engaged by a finger 20 projecting from the i and pointing in a suitable direction.
In the modifiedform ofmy device illustrated in Figures l and 5, the cover 15 has a groove 21 formed in its lower face having bevelled walls for engagement by a pin 22,
snapping into said groove upon the closing of the cover.
in Figures 6, 7 and 8, l have shown the iniOI' airangemcnt 1117 pipe stem according to which a metal tube 23 irranged in the longitudinal bore of the stem v 'l by a similar tube 2% somewhat wider in d eter than the tube 23 and made int with the bit or mouth-piece 12. absorbing means 25 is arra get -u A chamber 26 is tormed about tu 24: and their point of union, for the reception of body 27, for instance a wire covereo with absorbent material impregnated with a y odorizing agent protecting the wood of pipe against becoming saturated with odor of nicotine.
The operation and use of my device will be readily understood from the above description and by simultaneous inspection oi the drawing, and it will be clear that l have invented a tobacco pipe having a readily removable bowl cover whi h however, will be effectively protected against accidental dis placement securely hold the tobacco in place within the bowlof the pipe even it burning so that th user will not have to waste pertectl good tobacco when entering a place where smoking is prohibited as for instance a street car or subway. The introduction of asaliva absorbing material and the placing of an exchangeable deodorizing member in the chamber 6 will prevent the wood of the pipe from becoming saturated with tobacco odor, thus presenting a cool and sweet smoke.
The cover locking pins will allow a striking or" the pipe bowl, against objects in order to remove the ashes therefrom without clamage to the bowl, while the cover will allow a laying away of the pipe without danger of spilling the tobacco on a table, cover, or other support.
t will be understood that I have shown and described the preferred forms of my invention as few examples only of the many possible ways to practically construct my 1 pipe and cover therefor, and that I may make such changes in its general construction and its minor details as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention, and the principles involved.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A smoking pipe including its bowl havinga vertical recess formed in its wall a cover having a pluralityof recesses formed 111 its margin, a pivot stem on said cover entering the vertical recess to removably and turnably hold said cover to the bowl, a pin in April A. n. 1931.
JOHN KLEIN.
the upper margin or the bowl diametrically is opposite to the pivot stem to engage oneof I the recesses in said cover,a linger on said bowl near the pivot stem engaging the other or said recesses for securely holding the cover in r
