The inventiorirelates to a car wheel boring machine, and has for its object to afiord a practical and efiicient mechanism in which the tool head is operated by hydraulic means. More particularly, the purpose-of the 1nvention is to afford a construction in which the tool carrier of a boring machine is accurately guided in a way that permits controlling it hydraulically and imparting thereto uniform movements, which are steady and can be easily adjusted to obtain any desired feeds.
A further purpose of the invention lies in the provision of structure for automatically controlling the movements of the tool carrier of a wheel boring machine through a complete cycle of operations, and permitting ready adjustment of the necessary arts for varying the extent of movement 0 the tool carrier during the different stepsof the cycle to accommodate different sizes of work.
The invention also comprehends an efiicient and simple arrangement of parts enabling the operator to start a cycle of operations and to instantly stop the machine at any-point in the cycle if anything unforeseen occurs to necessitate bringing the parts to a standstill quickly.
An additional object is to afford adjustable cam mechanism for automatically governing a cycle of movements in a wheel boring machine, thus enabling such a tool to be successively operated hydraulically.
T 0 these and other ends the invention comprises the construction and arrangements of parts that will appear from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the description.

Figure 15 is a horizontal sectional'view taken approximately on line 15-15 of Fig-- ure 1, and
Figure 16 is a horizontalsectional view on line 16-16 of Figure 4.
The tool shown in the present embodiment comprises a car wheel boring machine including a base designated generally at-1 having a central opening 2 to receive the tools and tool carrier as they reach the downward limit of their movement. 3 is a work table mounted for rotation on the base, also having a central opening and provided with jaws 4 for clamping the wheel 5 on which the cutting operations are to be performed. The table 3 is provided on its underside with a bevel gear ring 6 driven by bevel pinion 7 which is operated through suitable change gearing from a motor 8. The structure thus for described is built in accordance with conventional types of car wheel boring machinery, the work piece being lowered into operative position by means of one of the cranes 9 located on opposite sides of the work table, see Figure 2, while the completed work is being removed by the other of said cranes 9. Said cranes carry cylinders cooperating with pistons mounted on the vertical rods 10 that are connected to a fixed cross-head 11, the cylinders with the cranes 9 being moved pnuematically with reference to the rods 10, in accord with practice known in the art.
15 designates an upright column at the top of which is mounted a head 16 terminating in a vertically arranged sleeve 17 within which is fixedly mounted a tubular support 18 carrying at its lower end a fixed piston 19. Surrounding and movable endwise of the piston 19 is a cylinder 20 that supports the tool carrier, as will be described presently, said cylinder 20 being closed at its upper end by a cylinder head 21 terminating in a stufling box 22 that permits sliding of the cylinder along the support 18. The cylinder 20 is located within a housing 25 that is held in place by bolts 26, see Figure 4, which also secure the cylinder head 21 on cylinder 20. The housing 25, see Figure 16, is guided vertically in ways formed by the overhanging vertical plates 26 secured to the upright column 15 at its sides and held by the bolts 27, while 28 are lateral guides or extensions on the housing projecting into said ways and moving vertically therein as the cylinder travels with relation to the piston 19, thereby holding the tool carrier firmly and in proper relation to the upright column 15 during its vertical travel.
Mounted at the lower end of the housing 25 is a tool carrier 31 upon which are mounted roughing tools 32, finishing tools 33, and chamfering tools 34. The cylinder 20 and tool carrier are moved downwardly with reference to piston 19 by means of fluid pressure entering through pipe 35 located within the tubular support 18 and communicating with the lower side of piston 19, see Figure 3, and 36 is a fluid pressure pipe leading to a point between pipe 35 and vtubular support 18.
When fluid pressure is forced in through the pipe 36, it passes downwardly around pipe 35, making an exit through port 37 ust at the top of the piston to the upper side of piston 19, thus causing the cylinder housing and tool carrier to move upwardly. Fluid pressure is caused to enter the pipes 35 or 36 by means of suitable oil gear mechanism designated diagrammatically at 38 and including a pump operated by motor 39. The direction in which the tool carrier moves and its rate of travel are governed by fluid pressure controlling devices which are of well known form and the movement of which is effected by an actuating rod 41, the latter the opposite end of the rock shaft 43 is an operating lever 44 carrying a handle 45, and constituting the means by which the operator starts each cycle of operations, and also the means by which the machine may be stopped immediately at anypoint in the normal cycle, in case of emergency.
The normal automatic operation is offected through an arm 46 loosely mounted on rock shaft 43 and normally locked to the operating lever 44*. To effect the last stated purpose, arm 46 carries an extension 47 having a recess 48 to receive a s ring pressed locking rod 49. The latter is shdably mounted on lever 44 in an ear 50 and extension 51, while 52 is a spring located between the ear 50 and plate 53 fixed on the locking rod 49. This acts to hold the locking rod normally in the position shown in Figure 7, with arm 46 locked to the operating lever 44, so that when the arm 46 is moved in one direction or another, as will be described in a moment, it causes a corresponding movement of the actuating rod 41 leading to the fluid pressure controlling devices.
Pivotally connected to arm 46 by means of pin 61 and slot 62 is a follower bar 63 carrying a follower 64 that engages adjustable cam mechanism on the tool carrier housing and is moved thereby. Connected to the center of the follower bar 63 is a link 65 pivoted at 66 and having connected to its upper end a controlling rod 67. 68 designates a spring surrounding the rod 67 and located between a fixed abutment 69 and a stop plate 70 carried on rod 67, the spring 68 operating through link 65 to press the follower bar 63 in a direction so as to cause the follower 64 to hug the cam surfaces that determine its movement. 71 is a spring connecting a lug 72 on the follower bar 63 with a stationary stop 73, and operating to hold the front end of the follower bar 63 in its uppermost position with reference to arm 46. The cam mechanism which controls follower 64 will now be set forth in detail.
Referring to Figures 5, 8 to 13, and 16, attached to one side of the housing 25 is a support designated generally at 81 which is constructed to accommodate preferably three and adapt the machine to work of different sizes and character. The first cam member includes a body portion 82 that is slidable in an L-shaped terminates at its ower end in a lateral extension plate having an upper face 8 and bottom faces 85 and 86 respectively, 1n the inclined and angular arrangement to each other shown in Figures 9 and 10, the guide 83 being fixedly attached to the support 81.
The body portion 82 of said cam member terminates at its upper end in a head or enlarged portion 87 having 1ts upper surface inclined as at 88. The cam member just described and its guide 83 are located in the way formed in the support 81 by the side wall 89 and rear wall 91, Figures 11 and 12.
The cam member is adjustable vertically,-
being held in any desired position such for instance as illustrated in Figures 9 and 10, by means of an adjusting bolt 92' which is connected to head 87, as shown in Figure 13, and travels in a slot 93 formed in the front wall of the support. By loosening bolt 92, the cam member to which it is connected can be moved vertically with reference to the support to any position within the length of the slot 93, such position determining the length of travel of the tool carrier during its approach to cutting position at a relative-.
ly fast rate of speed.
Adjacent to the guide 83 is the L-shaped guide 101 which is held in adjusted position by bolt 102 having threaded engagement with the lower end of the guide and slidable vertically in the slot 103 of the-support. Slidable in the guide 101 is a second cam member which determines the feed during rough cutting, and includes a body portion 104 and a head 105 having an inclined top surface 106, while 107 is a bolt having threaded engagement with the head 105 and slidable in the aforesaid slot 103, said bolt 107 being tightened to hold the cam member in any adjusted position, as for instance, such as shown in Figure 10.
The last mentioned cam member including body portion 104 and head 105 is located in juxtarelation to the first mentioned cam member as shown in Figures 13 and 14, and together with the L-shaped guide 101, is movable vertically in the way of the support designated at 108, see'Figure 11. The third cam member includes a body portion 111 that is slidable vertically in the L-shaped guide 112, and a head 113 having an inclined top surface 114. The last mentioned cam member is held in adjusted position by means of a bolt 115, see Figure 12, which is slidable vertically in the slot 116 while the L- shaped guide 112 is held in adjusted position by the bolt 117 slidable in the same slot at the lower portion thereof. Said guide 11.2 and the cam member slidable therein are located adjacent to the central cam member uide 83. The guide 83 a passage for directing the follower from guideway 121 back to its neutral against the vertical surface 126.
The follower normally occupies a position position against the vertical surface 126 of the plate 124, the actuating rod 41 being then in neutral position and the tool carrier stationary. To start a cycle of operations, assuming that lever 44 is locked to arm 46, as shown in Figure 7, lever, 44 is swung to the right, causing the follower to travel upwardly along inclined surface and then against the vertical surface of the first guide 83 and its cam member with the body portion 82, as shown in Figure 14. This movement of the levers causes a corresponding movement of the actuating rod 41 and thereby sets in operation the oil gear mechanism to cause fluid pressure to enter pipe 35, whence it passes to the underside of piston 19 and be-.
is at a fast rate of speed as it approaches the work, and down to the point where the roughing tools engage the work, after which a slower movement takes place. As the tool carrier moves downwardly, the housing to which it is connected carries with it the cam controlling mechanism already described and the fast movement of the tool carrier continues while the first guide 83 and thefirst cam member 82 are engaged'with the follower. moved downwardlyfar enough to permit the follower to ride laterally over its top surface 88 under the impulse of the spring 68, Figure 5, the follower next engages the body portion 104 of the second cam member, and during the travel of this cam member against the follower, the actuating rod 41 is in such 1 As soon as the first cam head 87' is' member is adjusted with its head 113 somewhat higher than cam head 105, so as to afford a third stage at a different speed for finish cutting or for chamfering, and it will be seen that the various cams and guides being adjustable within a wide range, permits of an automatic control for wheels of a great variety of sizes. When the follower reaches way 121, it causes a reversal of the fluid pressure, cuttin off the supply to pipe 35 and feeding it through pipe 36 and tubular support 18 to the upper side of the piston 19, causing the housing 25 and tool carrier to travel upwardly. Such upward movement continues at a fast rate of speed until the follower reachesthe bottom of the way 121, whereupon the inclined surface 125, see F igure 10, deflects the follower, forcing it laterally and downwardly to a neutral position go against the surface 126, and with it the actuating rod 41 which is also moved to 'a neutral position to stop further movements until the operator again moves the hand lever 44.
With this cam mechanism, it is possible to 85 adjust the several cams to any desired relationships so as to vary the extent of the fast approach, rough and finish cutting movements by a simple and quick adjustment of the parts described, depending upon the character of the work. If during the cycle of operations just described, becomes desirable or necessary to stop the movement of the tool carrier instantly, the locking rod 49 is pulled downwardly, as shown in Figures and 6, 85 permitting the handle to be moved independently of arm 46 and to throw the operating rod 41 to neutral position.
Figure 15 illustrates in detail the adjusting mechanism for varying the effective pressure of the pump of the hydraulic mechanism to change the speed of travel of the tool carrier. Various rates of flow or pressure are possible through the medium of suitable controlling devices in the hydraulic mechanism, the latter being operated respectively from shafts 131 and 132 which carry bevel pinions 133 and 134 in turn operated by bevel pinions P 135 and 136. The pinions 135 and 136 are mounted on adjusting shafts 137 and 138 which areprovided with hand wheels 139 and 140 andlock nuts 141 and 142 for holding the shafts 137 and 138 fixed for certain given adjustments.
While the invention has been described with respect to a specific structure, it is not restricted to the details or particular arrangements herein disclosed, and this application is intended to cover any modifications or departures coming within the intent of the improvement or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
