Patented May 31, 1932 nmreo STATES me. v
SCHNEIDER, OF YREKA,CAI:IFOBNIA' s T WRENCH Application filed December 13,19302? Seria1No.*502;O84l
This invention relates to a wrench, the prime object of which is to provide a novel structure whereby a quick adjustment of the jaws of the wrench is accomplished.
' Another object is to provide a wrench in which the movablejaw is rigidly held in adjusted position, and in which all strain is relieved on the adjusting rotor.
A further object is to provide a novel locking device to retain the adjusted position of the jaws.
Still another object is to provide a novel means for preventing the spreading of the sides of the movable aw.
Other objects, advantages, and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawings, the subj oined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary, side elevation of my wrench.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the lock.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the stationary jaw and racks.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerall'indicates a wrench inc'iuding a handle 2 and a head 3. On the head 3 is provided a stationary jaw 4 and also on each side of the head a pair of transversely extending racks 5-6 are integrally formed. The lower surfaces of the racks 5-6 are bevelled upwardly and inwardly as shown at 78 respectively. The purpose of this construction is to prevent side spreading of the sidesof the movable jaw, as will be further described.
A movable jaw 9 is slidably mounted on the head 3 and is adjusted transversely on the head by means of the rack 5, as follows: A geared rotor 10 is j ournaled in the jaw 9 and engages the rack 5. Thus by rotating the rotor, the jaw my be adjusted as desired.
A difiiculty in wrenches heretofore in use has been the tendency to work out of adjustment as the wrench is used, due to the fact that the strain of the work is pressed against the rotor and the rack. To obviate this diffi- 50 culty, I provide a locking roller 11 which is journaled in the jaw9. This roller is provided with teeth 12which engage the rack 6. During the adjustment of the jaw 9, the roller 11 is rotated downwardly, thus moving its teeth out of engagement with the rack 6. lVhen the jaw has been moved to the desired point, the roller is rotated so that its teeth engage the rack 6 and thus hold the jaw securely in position. The teeth 12 mesh accurately with the rack 6 and bind somewhat so that the strain is carried by the locking roller.
With this arrangement, the teeth on the locking side can be meshed more closely than is the case on the adjusting side. A certain amount of movement must be allowed between the adjusting rotor and its rack so as to provide free and easy movement. The jaw 9 bears upon plane surfaces 1313 on the head, thus providing a rest for the movable jaw and enabling it to move back and forth more easily.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A wrench comprising a handle, a head on the handle, a stationary jaw on the head, a pair of racks on said head, one on either side thereof, a movable jaw, an adjusting rotor journaled in the movable jawand engaging one of the racks, and lockingmeans in the jaw engaging the second rack, the lower surfaces of said racks being bevelled inwardly and'upwardly, said movable jaw fitting against said tapered surfaces whereby the jaw is held against side spreading, a pair of transversely extending plane surfaces on the head,,said movable jaw resting on said plane surfaces.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, a head on the handle, a stationary jaw on the head, a pair of racks on said head, one on either side thereof, a movable jaw, an adjusting motor journaledin the movable jaw andengaging one of the racks, a locking roller journaled in the movable jaw, teeth on one side of the locking roller, said teeth engaging the second rack whereby the aw is locked against movement.
3. A wrench comprisin a handle, a head on the handle, a stationary jaw on the head, a pair of racks on said head, one on either side thereof, a movable jaw, an adjusting rotor journaled in the movable jaw and engaging one of the racks, a locking roller journaled in the movable jaw, teeth on the locking roller, said teeth engaging the second rack whereby the jaw is locked against movement, the lower surfaces of said racks being bevelled inwardly and upwardly, said movable jaw fitting against said tapered surfaces whereby the Jaw is held against the side spreading, a pair of transversely extending plane surfaces on the head, said movable jaw resting on said plane surfaces.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
CHARLES L. MAGUIRE.
