Fig. 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section througha cylinder of an internal combustion engine-provided with a valve mechanism embodying my invention; and

Referring to the accompanying drawings,
my invention is shown in connectionwith an internal combustion engine comprising ,a cylinder 1 having a piston 1a reciprocating therein, and diametricallyopposite intake and I exhaust ports 2 and 3, respectively, in communication with the clearance space or combustionchamber 4 located between the upper end of saidpiston and the head 5 of said cylinder. The piston 14; is connected to the crankshaft (not shown) of the engine by means of the usual piston'rod (not shown) usual exhaust and intake manifolds (not shown) of the engine.v As shown in the drawings, the head 5 of the cylinder is provided with an opening adapted to receive an igniting device or spark plug 6. The inlet and exhaust ports and 3 are opened and closed by means of valves disposed within the combustion chamber l of the cylinder land slidable longitudinally and arrangements of parts hereinafter deand the intake andexhaust ports 2 and 3 may be connected in any suitable manner with the thereof across the inner ends of said ports.

Said valves: preferably comprise diametri cally opposed duplicate concavo-convex blocksor members whose convex surfaces are'injc'ontact with the bore of the cylinder and have ,aradius of curvaturecorresponding .to the radius of curvature of said bore. The slidevalves are supported on the lower ends of valve stems 8 arranged for Hrotary and vertical sliding movement inbores provided therefor in diametrically opposed upstandlower end of each valve-stem is provided with an oifset oreccentric pin portion 10, which extends through an elongated vertical". opening ll'provided therefor in'the slide valve supported by said stem. The flower s end of theeccentric portion '10 of the valve stem 8 is provided with across-head 12 that extends on oppositesides of theslot 11in.

The cross-headof the valve stem is made smaller thanthe slot in the slide valve, whereby said valve may be i mounted on and removed from the valve stem when the latter is rotated to bring the crosshead thereof into register with said slot. In assembling the parts, the spring 17 is twisted slightly in the direction in which it is wound,whereby'said :springacts after the manner ofa torsion or twist; spring and thus tends to rotate-the valve ste'm 8 in a direction which will force'the eccentric V pin thereof against the outer Wall of the elongated slot 11 in the slide valve 7 and thus maintain the convex face thereof in contact with the bore of the cylinder.
