J- A. SWAIN 7 ATTACHMENT FOR ARTIFICIAL LEGS Filed Aug. 13, 1931 Inverzfir I e/Z J'w'aiw Patented May 17, 1932 1,858,974
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES ARTHUR SWAIN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND ATTACHMENT FOR ARTIFICIAL LEGS Application filed. August 13, 1931, Serial No. 556,872, and in Great Britain September 4, 1930.
This invention relates to an attachment by wearer, beneath the belt at a point approximeans of which an artificial leg can be supmately at the axis of the hip joint, this arported from the body of the user in such rangement providing unrestricted move manner that the support yields or moves ment of the hip oint and securing the arti- 6 automatically in accordance with movements ficial limb to the body to a corresponding de- 55 of the hip joint, these latter movements being gree in any movement of the body. unobstructed by the attachment, which has 2. An artificial leg attachment according to not been the case with previous attachments claim 1, in which each strap passes freely of this kind. through one of a pair of loops or the like 19 The attachment according to this inv-ensecured to the limb. 60 tion comprises a belt adapted to be passed In testimony whereof I have signed my around the waist of the wearer and carrying name to this specification. two straps which are connected to the arti- JAMES ARTHUR SWAIN. [L. s] ficial limb, and which cross each other both at the front and rear of the body of the wear- 65 er beneath the belt, at a point approximately at the level of the hip joint, this arrangement being necessary to insure unrestricted movement of the hip joint and securing the arti- 20 ficial limb to the body to a corresponding de- 70 gree in any movement of the body.
Each strap passes through one of a pair of loops or the like, the two loops being respectively secured to opposite'sides of the artificial limb. Each of the straps is se 7 cured to the belt at two places.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view.
In this drawing, (1 represents the waist V belt and b the artificial limb, the limb 6 being 80 supported from the belt by means of the crossed straps 0 and d, which as shown cross both in the front at e and in the rear at f.
The limb b is provided at each side with a loop 9 or the like through which a strap 85 passes freely. Each strap is attached to the belt at'two places, and one of the attachments may in the case of each strap be adjustable, as for instance a buckle and strap.
40 Having thus described the nature of the 90 said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical efi'ect, I claim 1. An attachment by means of which an artificial leg can be supported from the body of the user, such attachment comprising a belt to which two straps connected to the limb are secured each in two places, the two straps being so arranged that they cross each other at the front and rear of the body of the 100
