The'device consists primarily of two. parts 1 and 2 hinged together in scissors-like formation. Each of these parts 1 and' 2 is off fork construction each having two prongs 3 and 4 and 5 and 6. One of theparts such as 1 is preferably slotted as shown at 7 and the other part 2 extends through this slotted opening and the parts being pivoted together at their juncture as shown at 8. The backwardly extending portions from the pivot are each provided with handles 9 and 10 by means of which the parts 1 and 2 may be broughttogether orseparatedtoclosed or open positions in sclssors-like fashion.

parts are then closed so thatthehairis clamped more or less; between the upper portion 1 and the lower portion 2; The sliding member is then operated by pressing the inwardly projecting ends of'the toggle-j ointed lever together which forcesthe sliding member longitudinally and'outwardly between the tooth members and thus moves a portion of the hair between the points whereit is held In order to produce a more or less permanent set in the hair that is operated upon the sliding member is provided with a heating unit preferably electrically operated. This ,heating unit is so formed and proportioned that it may be connected to any ordinary electric wiring system and the heating element will be brought to the proper temperature to secure the necessary more or less permanent wave in the hair. 'When the heating unit is used the parts which may come in contact with the scalp of the person whose hair is being waved may become heated and would therefore be unpleasant in contact with the scalp. To obviate this I provide a shield 25 preferably of heat insulating material such as bakelite or similar substance which is adapted to slip over the prong which will be at the point where the waving is to start. This shield is of U- shape and is adapted to slip longitudinally over the prong at oneside of the groove so as not to interfere with the groove passing over the teeth and it is also provided at one end-with an'inturned part which will extend over the end of the prong in a cup-like man- .ner and at the inner extremity with a spring clasp to fit the prong and hold the shield in position. (See Fig. 5.) This protects the scalp from the heat of the prong in case the temperature shall be raised, and inasmuch as the other prong need not rest against the scalp the shield on one prong only is necessary.
This shield also performs another function. It is of a sufficient thickness on its top portion so that when the parts are closed together in scissors-like formation to clasp the hair the upper portion of this shield will clamp tightly against the lower portion of the corresponding prong in the part 1 and thus clasp the hair tightly on this side at the same time forming a clearance between the other prong and its corresponding part 1n the upper portion which will permit the hair to move more or less freely through these parts. By this arrangement when the device is first put into operation the prong of the part 2 next to the point at which the waving operation begins is covered with the shield. The hair is clasped tightly therefore at this point with the teeth on the respective prongs and on the movable slides engaging the hair at different points. on the heating element is brought to the proper, temperature and the movable slide is moved longitudinally pushing that portion of the hair between the two prongs of the part 1 into a'wave-like formation, that portion of the hair between the shield 25 and the corre- The current being turned permanent set. The parts are then separated by means of the handles and removed and the operation repeated at a point adjacent to where the first wave stopped. The clasping of the hair at the point of starting by means of the shield 25 in the continued operation prevents the hair from being drawn from the waves already formed and thus distorting the same. This operation is continued until all that part of the wave on one side of the middle portion of the hair is completed. The shield is then shifted to the other prong and that portion of the hair on the opposite side of the middle portion or part is waved in a similar manner, the hair being held clasped at the point of starting and adjacent to each finished wave while it is free to be drawn between the teeth to form the succeeding waves, without disturbing or distorting the waves already formed or pulling of the hair at the scalp in the starting operation. 2. A device such as described in claim 1 characterized by having teeth in the prongs and sliding member respectively that are in staggered relation to each other.
3. A construction such as described in claim 1 in which multiple rows of teeth are embodied in the sliding member, the teeth in onerow being staggered with relation to the other.
4. A construction such as claimed in claim 1 in which the teeth'in the sliding member are in staggered relation to the teeth in the pronged member and also in staggered relation to each other. I
5. A hair waver consisting of two principal members hinged together in scissors-like formation, each being of forked construction with extending prongs, the prongs in one pa rt having projecting teeth and the prongs in the other part having openings to fit over said teeth and a detachable shield adapted to be attached to one of the prongs of that member having the openings, said shield being of insulating material. r
6. In a hair waver formed of two principal parts hinged together in scissors-like formation, one of said parts being provided with projecting teeth arranged in parallel relation on opposite sides thereof and a sliding member between these parts also having projecting teeth in parallel relation to the teeth in the main member, a heating unit forming a part of said sliding member and a shield on one of the prongs of the opposite member adapted to bemoved in clamping position with reference to the tooth member.
7. In a hair waver composed of two principal parts hinged together in scissors-like formation, one of said parts having two prongs with projecting teeth and the other of said parts having two prongs with open ings to fit over or telescope said teeth, a
toothed sliding member between said toothed prongs having a heating unit, means for moving said sliding member longitudinally in relation to the projecting teeth of the main member and a detachable shield adapted to be connected to either one of the prongs of the telescoping member, said shield being made of heat insulating material and adapted to be brought into clamping relation with reference to the toothed member adjacent thereto.
8. The combination with the two principal forked elements hinged together in scissorslike formation with extending handles, one of said parts having toothed projections and the other of said parts having perforated prongs adapted when the parts are closed together to fit over theteeth in the other part, :a toothed sliding element arranged between the toothed prongs of one part, pivoted levers having link connections connected to the sliding member at one end and to the pivoted member at the other end in a lazy- :tongs formation, said levers being pivoted together and to the forked portion and extending backwardly into proximity of the handles for operating the main parts.
9. In a hair waver composed of two principal parts hinged together in a scissors-like formation, one of said parts having two prongs with depending teeth and the other part having a similar number of prongs with perforations to fit over said teeth, a sliding 7 element between the toothed prongs of one l member provided with an electrical heating unit, means for manipulatingsaid parts to open and close the sameand'means consisting of pivoted levers and springs for causing a longitudinal movement of said sliding elev ment with relation to said toothed prongs.
10. In a hair waver composed I of two principal parts pivoted together in scissorslike formation with handles for opening and closing the parts with relation to each other,
one of said parts having prongs with depend ing teeth and the other part having similar prongs with openings to fit over said teeth and a detachable shield having means for,
securing the same to one or the other of said formation, each of the parts being forked with extending prongs, each of the prongs in one of the parts having comb like teeth 7 and the prongs in the other part having slotted openings to fit over said teeth, a sliding element located between the toothed prongs of one'member, handles on the pivoted portion for opening and closing the same and means in proximity to these handles for causing a sliding movement of the sliding member.
12. In a .hair waver, two parts hinged together in scissors-like formation, each of said parts having a pair of projecting spaced-apart members, a series of teeth arranged on each of the members of one of the parts, said teeth when the said parts are closed together straddling portions at least of the members of the other part, a sliding element located between the toothed members, and means for causing a sliding movement of sald shdmg member.
