Description

May 17, 1932- R. c. HUGHES SHIELD Filed May 9. 1931 Patented May 17, 1932 UNITED STATES RUTH G. HUGHES, F TOIPEKA, KANSAQ SHIELD Application filed Kay 9, 1931. Serial No. 586,269.
The object of this invention is to provide a shield for protecting the eyes, face and neck of one during the drying of the hair by means as is now employed in barber shops, beauty L parlors and the like so that the customer may read during the dryin of the hair subsequent to the dressing of t e hair.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a shield which will prevent the 3-0 skin at the back or neck of the customer being burned or otherwise coming into contact with the heat rays.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a shield of the above mentioned character which can easily be applied or removed and which during the application or removal ghereof will in no wise disturb the dressed Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the followin description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawings wherein:
. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shield, the same being shown as applied to the head.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the shield.
Figure 3 is a to plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is an en elevational view thereof.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of one end portion of the shield.
The shield, which is indicated in general by the reference character 5 consists of a body portion or sheet 6 formed of flexible material such as isinglass, asbestos, cardboard, cloth and the like and as is apparent from a study of Fi res 1 and 2, it will be seen that the sheet is substantially frusto-conical and the arcuateedges of the sheet are folded and stitched for reinforcin said edges as at 7'. At its inner edge the ody 6 is folded inwardly as at 7'. v
The ends of the body 6 are adapted to be arranged in overlapping relation, and at said ends the inwardly folded edge portion 7 is provided with complemental fastening elements 8 and 9 for securing said ends in overlapping relation and for retaining the shield in position on the head as su gested in Figure 1. In actual practice, the s eld is disposed about the head at the crown of the head as suggested in Figure 1, with the inner edge of the body 6 contacting the head for supporting the shield in position thereon, said head being retained in engagement with the head when the ends of the shield are secured toas gether by the fastening elements 8 and 9 as is thought apparent. Thus it will be seen that the shield extends downwardly and outwardly over the face of the wearer, at the front. sides and at the back of the head thus pro- 00 tecting the neck, the face, and the eyes from the heat rays and preventing the heat rays from contacting with the bare skin. A customer provided with a shield of this character will therefore, be relieved of the many petty annoyances incident to the drying of the hair subsequent to the dressing of the hair, and during the drying process will be at ease and may read or otherwise employ herself during the period of time required for drying the hair.
It will be also apparent that a shield of this character may be readily placed on the head and easily removed therefrom and will in no wise disturb the dressed hair.
Even though I have herein shown and de scribed the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A shield having an opening for a head and separated by a slit extending from the head opening to the outer edge, the edge por tion of the shield surrounding the head opening being folded on itself, and means for securing the end edges formed by said slit in overlapping relation, and including fastening elements on the outer side of said folded over portion adjacent one ofsaid end edges. and additional fastening elements, complemental to the first mentioned fastening elements, arranged on the inner side of said folded over portion adjacent the other of said end edges.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RUTH O. HUGHES.
