Description

MaylO, 1932- J. OLESCHAK. JR
SAFETY DEVICE FOR VAULT OR SAFE DOOR LOCKS Filed Sept. 4, 1930 Patented May 10, 1932 UNITED STATES JULIUS OLESCHAK, .13., or PHILADELPHIA} rENNsxLv NIA SAFETY DEVICE roe VAULT on sar s 'iioon Loc s 7 Application filed September 4', 1930. seriaiKnuckle. M p I My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety device for vault or safe door locks, and has for one of its objects to generally improve devices of this kind which will be simple in construction although strong and durable and eflicient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a supplementary lock or catch for the door lock bolts to be engaged with the latter and thus prevent movement thereof should the permutation lock mechanism be cut and blown and knocked in.
With these ends in view, this invention con sists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a vault or safe door looking toward the inside thereof showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the auxiliary lock or catch with the locking bolts removed.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the weakened holding member looking to ward the face opposite that shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 5 is a conventional showing of a vault or safe door or other closure provided with guides 6 for the lock or looking bolts 7' to which is connected a cross piece 8 to cause the lock or locking bolts to move in unison when thrown by the handle mechanism 9, said mechanism being controlled in the usual way by a permutation lock mechanism conventionally illustrated at 10.
5 On a suitable support, as one of the guides 6, in the region of one of the sliding lock or locking bolts 7 or some component part thereof is mounted the auxiliary or secondary lock or catch 11 slidable in a housing 12 which is 0 secured to the support for projection into the ing bolts 7 move into their locked position,
notch l3 un'der certain conditions and said housing 1-2-has a-slot l l therethrough for the passageandmovement of a pin Iii carried by and projecting from the catch 11 to which may be fastened one end of a springlG while v the othe'rend of said spring is anchored onra pin 17 carried by'the housing 12 or other stationaryp'ert.
The' pin 15 also provides them'eans for W pivotally' connecting one end of the lever 18 1 withthe catch, said lever preferably having a slot or enlarged opening through which said pin 15 passes'a'nd this lever is pivoted intermediate its endsasat 19. to some stai tionaryypar t, such-as the housing 12 of the catch 11 and to the opposite end of said lever is" attached oneen'd of a flexibleconnctorQO. "cable or other equivalent.
The flexible connector 20 passes around a Fr guide-post21 or some equivalent or substitute for changing the direction of pulling or movement ofj said flexible connector and the oppositeend of said connector is then fastenedto the free end of the arm' 22 of the weakened-holding'member 23 which also in- 'c'lu'des abase 2 by which it is attached to a bracket 25 through the' medium of suitable fastening devices 26, such as bolts, screws, rivets or the like. The bracket25 is permanently attached to the inside of the vault or i safety door orother closure. The arm'22 of the holding member is weakened by forming a groove 27: transversely thereof and intermediate its ends'so that when the holding s member is in place, the weakened portion will i be ata point between the bracket 25 and the permutationlock mechanism 10 across which the freeend'of'thejarm 22 is disposed so as to be infthe'p ath of travel of said permutation lock 'niechanism should the samebe' blown or knocked inward. Q 7 V p e I Inoperation, when thef vaultor safe door or other closureis closed and the lock or lookthe notch 13 will lie directly beneaththe. auxiliary lock or catch 11, but said catch will not enter the notch 13 so longas the flexible connector 20 and the holding member 23 are intact but should an attempt be made to open the door by first blowing or cutting away the 1 39 permutation lock mechanism and then knocking the same inward, such action will bend the free end of the arm 22 about its weakened portion 27 so that said arm will be. broken in two thereby releasing the auxiliary lock or catch 11 permitting it to descend through gravity. and the action of the spring 16 until it enters the notch 13, thus holding the lock or looking bolts 7 against withdrawal and the weight of that portion of the arm 22 which'is broken'oifwiIl-canse it to move the horizontal portion of thefiexible connector into a sub'stantial'vertical position so that said flexible connector will beout of reach of a persons hand or any instrumentality which may be inserted through the hole produced by the removal of the permutation lock mechanism and it is to be understood that the catch 11 is so positioned as to be out of reach. i V
Of course I do not wish to be limited to e the exact details of construction as. herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention. j
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new. and useful is 2-1 The combination with a vault or safe door including supporting members on-the inner face of said door, lock bolt mechanism slidably mounted in said supports, handle mechanism for actuating the lock. bolt mechanism, a permutation lock mechanism controlling the mechanism, a bracket on the inner face of the door in the region of the permutation lock mechanism, of a holding member including a base for secnrement to the bracket and an arm projecting from said base across the inner end of the permutation lockmechanism, said arm having atransverse groove in one face thereof to weaken said arm between the bracket and, the permutation lock mechanism, an auxiliary latch mounted on one of the supports forcoaction withthe locking bolt mechanism, aspring to move said auxiliary latch into a notchin the lock bolt mechanism and pivoted lever. having one end connected with the latch and a flexible connector having one end attached to the op- 5 posite end of said lever and passing around a guide post and connected to the free end of the weakened holding member to nor- ,mally maintain the spring under tension and the auxiliary latch out of engagement with the notch and the locking bolt mechanism.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.- I v JULIUS- OLESGHAK, JR.
