My invention relates-in general to water closet tanks and flushing devices and has for its object broadly the provision of a tank and inlet valve therefor of silent operation.
Q Primarily the invention contemplates the provision of an improved automaticall con-v trolled water closet tank inlet valve w erein provision is made for its silent o eration, and wherewith is provided means orregu- 10 lating and shutting oif the water supplied to the valve.
Prior to my invention considerable annoyance has been experienced by reason of noise occurring in the inlet valve casing upon flush- 15 ing of the closet bowl, this noise being due largely to the accumulation of pockets of air in the inlet valve casing and around the valve afterthe flushing operation. Y
The main object of the invention .is the 20 provision ofsimple and effective means which provides-for the silent operation of the automatically controlled inlet valve while the tank is bein refilled as an incident to the liushing an refilling of the closet bowl.
15 Another important object of the invention v is the provision of simple means which eiec- ,tively provide against 'air accumulating and mixing with the water around the inlet valve disposed in an inner chamber provided in the automatically controlled inlet valve casing.
Arfurther obj ect of the invention is the rovision of a water supply regulating and s utoi valve to be associated with the automatically controlled inlet valve for the purpose ofu regulating the water supplied throughV the in- .vlet valve. y

Another object of the invention is the provision of an automatically controlled inlet valve enclosed in a casing which is provided with an inner and outer chamber and which casing forms an enclosure for a portion of the valve operating mechanism which is hingeably secured-therein. l y
Numerous. other objects and advantages of the invention will be afpparent as it is better understood from the ollowing description, which, taken in connection with the accom- .panying drawings, discloses a preferred einA bodlment thereof.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown it embodied 1n a tank 11 l of ordinary or preferred construction, the one shown on the drawings beingof the type termed in the trade low down This tank is adapted to communicate in any suitable manner with a closet bowl (not shown) n through a pipe 12 suitably connected through the bottom of the tank by means of fittings 13 and 14, the fitting 14 providing a seat for a discharge valve 15 which provides aL- seal between the tank and the water closet bowl. The valve 15-may be moved by any suitable means to establish communication between the pipe 12 and the interior Vof the at 22, into a casing 19 which is provided with m a regulating and shut-off valve 21. The casing 19, as constructed in the present instance, is provided with two opposite open ends 23 and 24, the end 23 being threaded at 25, and
the end 24 at 26 and 27. Intermediate the l ends, the casing provides a central chamber 28 above a valve seat 29 for the regulating and shut-oft' valve 21.
rlhe casing 19 is also provided with a lateral threaded opening 31 communicating with the central chamber 28. The valve 21 extends through the opening 27 and has threaded engagement with threads 26, said valve 2l being provided at its outer end with a screw-driver slot 32 as a means for adjusting same to a suitable position. A packing nut 34 is engaged with threads 27 and compresses packing 33 to prevent leakage around the valve 21.
The automatically controlled valve, generally indicated as 35, comprises, in the presl ent construction, a valve casing 36 which encloses a longitudinally movable valve 37 and a portion of the valve operating mechanism 38, the valve 37 being provided with a guiding member 39 which is slidably mounted in the casing 36, and through the guiding member 39 is formed a slot 41 which is arranged in cooperative relation with a slot 42 provided in the casing 36, as indicated in F ig. 2, said valve operating portion 38 being inserted through the slots 41 and 42 and hingeably secured by a pin .43 in the hollow lug 44, as indicated in Fig. 2.
Between said valve 37 and its guiding member 39 is disposed a cup-shaped member valve 45 slidahly mounted in `the casing 36 but adapted to prevent leakage ofwater from the casing through the slot 42. Through an opening 46 in the end of said casing 36 is inserted a silencer sleeve 47 which is adapted to form an inner chamber 48 and an outer chamber 49 in combination with the casing 36. An opening 51 is provided in the side of the sleeve 47 and arranged upwardly when the sleeve is inserted in the casing 36, the opening 51 providing a passage for water from the inner chamber to the outer chamber. Fitted into the open end of the sleeve 47 is a flange union 52 which has a threaded opening 53 into which is threaded a tubular valve seat 54, the cup shaped washer 45 and the casing 36 being adapted to form a closure for one end of the inner chamber 48, and the union 52, valve seat 54 and valve 37 being adapted to form a closure for the opposite end of said chamber. The inner chamber thus formed provides for the maintaining of a water seal around the valve 37 during the operation of opening and closing same when flushing the closet bowl and filling the tank 11, said water seal being permanent, prevents the accumulation of air around the valve lat all times. From certain aspects of this invention, the sleeve 47 may be considered a casing part and the opening 51 its outlet opening.
The union 52 is clamped, together with a packing 55, against the end of the casing 36 y means of a clamping nut 56 which is threaded over the external threads 57 of the casing 36. The outer end of' the union 52 is provided with external threads 58 which are adapted to fit the threaded opening 31 of the casing 19.
The casing 36, as constructed in the present instance, provides a downwardly projecting chamber 59, which joins with the outer chamber 49, and into the bottom of the chamber 59 is threaded an outlet or delivery pipe 61, the upper end of which extends into the chamber 59 an appreciable distance above the bottom 62 thereof, so that the chamber 59 cannot be completely drained.
An overflow pipe 63 is provided to determine and limit the height of the water in the tank, and the bottom end of this pipe being threaded into the hollow fitting 14 forms an overflow outlet for the tank 11.
A refill pipe 64 is threaded into the casing forming the chamber 59 at or near its bottom 62 and below the top of the delivery pipe 61 and, from its connection with the` casing, as shown at 65, it extends upwardly terminating into a loop or bend 66, the end of which extends into the top of the overflow pipe 63 through which .it is in communication with the hollow fitting 14 and consequently with the closet bowl when the tank 11 is installed. The space beneath the top of the delivery ipe 61 and the bottom of the chamber 59 orms a water seal coverin the lower end of the pipe 64, and this sea.' prevents the entrance of air into the receivin end of the refill pipe at all times.
Vhen the valve 15 is open to flush the bowl, the water runs rapidly from the tank` of its attendant 'advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A closet tank inlet valve comprisin a horizontally arranged valve casing, a va Ve for the formation of air pockets or in said casing, and a sleeve embracin said valve and having an o ning provi lng a water seal about said va ve.
2. A closet tank inlet valve comprising a 5 horizontally arranged valve casing a valve in said casmg, and a sleeve surrounding said valve and having an'opening in its `top for providing a water seal about said valve.
