Description
L. H. ROGERS. COMBINED LETTER SHEET AND ENVELOPE. No.185,785, Patented Dec. 26, 1876.
THE GRAPHIC 00.1mm
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEBBEUS H. ROGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LETTER SHEET AND ENVELOPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [85,785, dated December 26, 1876; application filed September 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEBBEUS H. ROGERS,
' of New York city, in the State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Letter Sheets and Envelopes, of which the following is a specification:
The characteristic feature of the envelope I have devised consists of sealing-flaps formed from and lying within the compass of the body of the sheet of writing-paper, which, when folded, is sealed by said flaps, as hereinafter described. With flaps thus made there is no loss of stock or waste of paper, and the flaps themselves can be made by a single cut, and, if desired, can at the same time be gummed, the gum when used being applied to that face of the flaps opposite to that on which the sheet is written.
The accompanying drawing represents the manner in which I prefer to carry my invention into effect.
Figure l is a view of the sheet unfolded.
A is the sheet. I) are the flaps, formed, each, by a single cut, from the body of the sheet, and lying within its compass. They are formed near the side edges of the sheet, and preferably in the top fold, although they may be formed in either of the other folds, if desired. The rear faces or backs of the flaps are preferably gummed.
To fold the sheet the lower end is folded over onto the sheet even with the dotted line a. The top is then folded down over the bottom fold, the flaps then occupying the position shown in Fig. 2. The gummed flaps are then moistened, and are folded outwardly around the side edges of the paper, and are sealed on the back of the sheet, as indicated in Fig. 3.
For travelers use I combine a number of letter-sheets, made as above described, in book form, perforating the sheets along the top edge, so that they may be conveniently detached or torn off. For convenience sake, I also combine with the letter-sheets sheets of thin manifold-paper, placing in front of each letter-sheet a manifold-paper sheet.
By placing a sheet of carbon-paper between the letter-sheet and thin manitbh'l-paper, and then Writing on the latter with a medium or hard lead-pencil the letter will be written on the letter-sheet, and at the same time a copy of the same will be preserved on the manifoldpaper.
A letter may thus be written, and a copy at the same time made and preserved, without the use of pen, ink, or letter-press, which will be found a great convenience to travelers.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sheet of Writing-paper provided with gummed sealing-flaps out from and formed within the compass of the body of the sheet, and adapted to be folded outwardly around the side edges of the folded sheet, as set forth.
In testlmon y whereof Ihave hereunto signed my name this 14th day of September, A. D.
L. H. ROGERS. Witnesses:
M. M. BUDLONG, (J. G. PERKINS.
