This invention relates to improvements in a. combined brush and buffer construction. More particularly it relates to compactly made combined brushing and buliing device.

It an object ofthis invention to provide a combined brush and buffer" to avoid the necessity of using separate equipment for maintaining and using brushes and polishing or hinting Wheels.

Still another object iste provide a compactly and simply designed combined brush and buffer for use in cleaningand polishing the surface of'various objects.

Thc bundle of bristles are of substantially equal length and are sufliciently large so that when it is to be folded in tivo parts to be inserted in the holes 14 only little free space would remain therein between the bristles'aud the wall of each hole. When the bril-sigle bundles 16 are set in the holes correspending with the series of holes in the hub 'lib and one series is made, a compacted pad of concentricallv shaped buiiing material 22 is attached against such series of bundles.

The birding' material used may be of any suitable hind, such as chamois, cotton, felt,

or other soft material which is commonly used in the butling art. The inner circumference of the pad 22 is in contact with the periphery of the hub 10. The edges of the pad 22 adjacent their inner circumference may be sewed to keep the individual sheets 24 of the buling material constituting the pad in compact form so that when the device is used the sheets will not tend to slip and slide over each other due to the rotary motion imparted thereto during its use on a machine.

In order to keep the buifing material pad 22 in stationary position with respect to the periphery of the hub, strings or connecting means 18 are passed through the pad of material at a point preferably near the marginal edge of the inner circumference. The end of the string 18 holding the pad in relative stationary position may be knotted or sewed into the pad as long as an effective holding engagement with the pad is obtained. Furthermore, the strings 18 may be disposed at spaced intervals along the inner circumference of the pad 22 to afford a multiple engagement with the bristle bundles 16 and keep the parts in relative stationary position.

The outer circumference of the sheets of buing material pad 22 is left free so as to provide as much of the material for baiting or polishing. As an object is being bufl'ed and brushed by a device embodied in the present invention, the bufling material intermediate the bristles covers a large surface areaof the object. By this arrangement of the pads 22 interposed between series of bristle bundles, a combined and effective action of brushing and buiing is effected on an object to be polished.

By way of illustrating one method of attaching a. bundle of bristles containing connecting means thereon for the butling material to the sides of the holes of hub 10, a plurality of bristles are brought together with a string 18 to form a fascicle or bundle, as shown in Fig. 3. A staple 20 is placed around the middle of the bundle of bristles and driven into holes 14 arranged on the hub 10. As the sharp ends of the staple 2O are driven into the hub and around the opening 14, the bundle of bristles with the free end of string 18 contained therein is folded into two parts whereby they become intimately mixed to form a compact mass at the part protruding from the hole 14, while the bristles at the upper part of the bundle are spread out. As the free end of string 18 becomes enmeshed in the folded bundle of bristles in the hub, the end attached to the builing pad is drawn so as to pull the pad against the hub 10. The ends of the bristles and the builing pad may then be trimmed to afford an even polishing and brushing edge.

From the foregoing` description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention,

' it will be noted that a combined brush and butling wheel is obtained, in which the bristle fascicles or bundles retain, as enclosing means, a cord or string in engagement or connection with a pad of concentrically shaped builing material having the same general outline as the brush bristles, while the builing pads are interposed between successive rows of bristles and have the outer circumference free to spread out and afford a maximum of polishing surface. It is to be understood that the pads may be secured to the hub of the device in any manner.

Although the description includes the use of a cord or string to be used in connection with the .bufling pad and the bristle bundles, U

such connecting cord may be eliminated and a pad of buffing material may be used which will have an inner circumference slightly smaller than that of the hub of the wheel so as to form a close lit against the hub.

In the use of a combined brushing and buthng device, as herein described, there is a saving in time and in equipment and material required over that now used in the brushing and polishing of plated materials.

While one embodiment of the invention in its preferred form has been hereinabove described and shown, it is to be understood that various modifications and changes as to form, arrangement, construction, and size may bemade without departing from the Vspirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, the privilege is hereby reserved of making any and all changes without being limited in the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in thefollowing appended claims.

I claim 1. A combined brushl and buffer consisting of a plurality of'spaced rows of bristle bundles disposed in the hub, pads of butling material intermediate the rows of said bristle bundles and surrounding the periphery of the hub, a cord connected with the pads and extending into a bristle bundle in the hub thereof, and a staple for retaining said bristle bundles and also Ythe cord tautly whereby the latter draws the inner edge of the pads against the hub to prevent slipping of the same around the hub.

2. In a combined brushing and buing device having a rotary hub with series of holes arranged at spaced intervals along'its periphery, and bristle bundles inserted wit-hin each of said holes` the improvement consisting of pads of buHing material interposed between successive rows of bristle bundles, and a cord attached to the pad and retained within a bristle bundle for retaining said pads in relatively stationary position on the hub.
