My improved barrel handling device A comprises a pair of like companion devices which are adapted to be arranged at the opposite sides of the barrel and as these devices are of substantially the same construction only one will be described in detail.
Each one of the devices comprises a frame 15 formed of Wire of the desired gage, or
iron or steel rod bent into the desired shape. This frame 15 includes parallel side bars 16 and 17 having their upper ends provided with outwardly extending arms 18, which are connected together by a transversely extending front bar 19, which serves to space the side bars 16 and 17 from the barrelas will be later described. The lower ends of the side bars 16 and 17 are provided with forwardly projecting legs 20 which extend in the same direction as the arms 18. These legs 20 are ofi set intermediate their ends as at 21, and the extreme forward ends of the legs are provided with upwardly extending vertical prongs 22 for engaging under the rim 12 of the bar rel B. is threaded and provided with a wing nut 35 and the portions of the grippingmembers 33 which are looped about the bolt are adapted to bear against the spaced vertical bars 16 and 17 Thus by tightening the wing nut 35 these gripping members can be brought into gripping contact with the vertical bars 16 and 17 to hold the tubular hand grip in the In use of my improved'barrel handling device the members are placed on opposite sides of the barrel as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings and the prongs 22 are placed underneath the rim 12 as shown, after which the jaw 23 is slipped forwardly onthe legs 20 into contact with the barrel. The jaw 19 will engage the barrel above the rim and will act as means for gripping the barrel and for also spacing the tubular hand grip 31 therefrom. It is thus obvious that persons on opposite sides of the barrel can readily grasp the hand grip 31 and carry the barrel without undue difiiculty.
In Figures 5 to 7 inclusive I have shown another form of my device which is generally indicated by the reference character B. In this form of my invention I provide a frame 40 which is likewise constructed from wire of the desired gage or a rod pressed into the desired shape. As shown, this frame 40 includes the straight vertical bars 41 and 42, the upper ends of which are provided with forwardly extending right angularly disposed arms 43, the arms being connected together by an integral bight portion or horizontally disposed barrel engaging jaw 44.
'The lower ends of the bars 41 and 42 are bent downwardly and forwardly as at 45 and then forwardly in a horizontal plane as at 46.
The bars are then further bent to provide offwhich the rods are bent back upon themselves into I engagement with the horizontal portion 46. The rods are then further bent to provide upright vertical rests 49 and are 'finally bent rearwardly as at 50 and coiled about the parallel bars 41 and 42 as at 51.
The feet 47 are adapted'to receive an angle bar 52 which engages under the rim of the barrel and the eyes 48 can receive suitable bolts 53 which extend through the angle bar 52. The vertical flange of the'angle bar is in spaced parallel relation to the vertical portion 49 of the crane and the vertical portion can engage the barrel on the outside of the rim.
The device is used in the same manner as the device in the preferred form and the horizontal portions 50 can be used as handles if desired. V
In Figures 8 and 9 I have shown a further modified form in which ahandle is provided for the type of frame illustrated in F igures 5, 6, and 7 In this form, in order to provide handles the coiled portion of the wire or rod 51 is continued upwardly in spaced'parallel relation to the rods 41 and 42, as at 53, and then again coiled about the rods 41 and 42, as at 54, and brought inwardly between the bars 41 and 42 to provide the handles 55.
In Figures 10 to 12 inclusive, I have illustrated a modified form of handle which can be used with those forms of by invention il- The the other rod 17 is adapted to be engaged by a washer 63 placed around the shank of the bolt, a thumb nut 64 being threaded on the bolt for drawing the washer 63 into gripping contact with the upright or red 17 and the eye into gripping contact with upright or rod 16.
In Figures 13 and 14 I have illustrated another form of my improved barrel holder and carrier and the same is generally indicated by the reference character C. As shown, this barrel carrier and lifter may also be formed of wire of the desired gage or a length of bent rod, and the same includes side bars and 71, which are coiled intermediate their ends to provide eyes 72. The bars 7 0 and 71 extend forwardly in angular relation relative to the eyes as clearly shown in Figures 13 and 14;, .and the upper ends of the rods 70 and 71 are extended forwardly to provide arms 7 4, which are connected by a curved jaw or bight portion 75. The lower ends of the rods 70 and 71 are provided with forwardly projecting legs 76 having formed thereon the vertically extending sharpened prongs 77, which are adapted to engage under the barrel as shown in Figure 14, the curved bight portion engaging the sides of the barrel at a point spaced from the bottom thereof. The eyes 72 receive a holding bolt 78, which extends through the axial bore of a handle 79, and the thumb or like nut 80 can be threaded on the bolt for holding the handle in position against displacement. The form of barrel lifter and carrier shown in Figures 13 and 14 is of simple yet effective nature.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided an exceptionally simple and durable device for facilitating the carrying of barrels.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but
What I claim as new is:
1. A barrel lifting device comprising a pair of like members for engaging on opposite sides of the barrel, each of said members including a frame, means at one end of o the frame for engaging under the rim of the barrel, means at the opposite end of the frame for engaging the barrel at a point spaced from the rim, said last named means acting to space the major portion of the frame from the barrel, a handle carried by said portion of the frame, said handle being adjustable.
2. A barrel handling and carrying device comprising a pair of like members for engaging the opposite sides of the barrel, each of said members including a frame including spaced parallel side bars, means carried by the upper ends of the bars for engaging a barrel at a point spaced from the rim, means carried by the lower ends of the bars for en gaging under the rim, a handle between said bars, said handle including a tubular hand grip, a bolt extending through the tubular hand grip and engaging one side of the bars, bar gripping members looped about the bolt and engaging said bars, and a wing nut on bers I mprisi a a pair Of de ice f as s ing; on OpROSite; sides} of; the barrQI, each; ofa dide e i m'p Sine e r nle er n di rem as ngle length of material and including a.

A barrel carrying and lifting device comprising a pair of like devices for engaging on opposite sides of the barrel, each of said devices comprising a frame formed from a single length of material and including a pair of spaced parallel side bars, a forwardly extending ofi'set bight portion connecting the upper ends of the bars for engaging the barrel at a point spaced from the rim, forwardly projecting legs carried by the lower ends of the bars having an offset portion, upstanding prongs carried by the forward ends of the legs for engaging under the rim of the barrel, a handle carried by said bars, an adjustable jaw slidable on the leg toward the prongs, said adjustable jaw including a sheet metal plate having a base plate and an upstanding vertical wall, the
ends of the base plate having guide eyes slidable on the legs.
6. A barrel lifting device comprising a frame formed from a single lengthof material and including a pair of spaced parallel bars, an integral oflset bight portion connecting the upper ends of the bars for engaging a barrel, forwardly extending legs on the lower ends of the bars bent back upon themselves and looped to provide eyes, inwardly directed arms on the bent portions coiled about the cross bars, and an angle bar placed on the eyes, and bolts extending through the eyes and angle bar.
7. A barrel lifting device comprising a frame forr'ned mm 32 single length of mal terial and including a pair of spaced parallel bars, an integral ofiset bight portion connecting the upper ends of the bars for engaging' a barrel, forwardly extending legs on the lower ends of the bars bent back upon themselves and looped to provide eyes, inwardly directed arms on the bent portions coiled about the cross bars, an angle bar placed on the eyes, bolts extending through the eyes and angle bar, the'coiled portion being continued parallel with the bars and looped about said bars and having inwardly'directed extension providing handles.
