This invention relates to a toolor device for use in setting or turning theedges of scraping tools and particularly to devices of this class known as burnishing tools; and the o object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified with means-for adjustably and firmly clamping a scraping tool in connection with one part thereof as well as the provision of means for adjustably and movably mounting a burnishing tool in connection with another part thereof, said last named part being adjustable with respect to the first named part; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified having means whereby the an gular position of the burnishingtool with respect to the edge of a scraping tool may ba varied to control and regulate the turning or setting of the edge of saidtool; a further 29 object being to provide a handle member in connection with which a burnishing tool is adjustably and detachably supported; a still further object being toprovide aburnishing tool of the class specifiedhaving an irregue lar cross sectional contour so as to provide a plurality of surfaces of difi'erent curvature in the several uses thereof; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

' In carrying my invention into eife'ct, I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, one form of construction which {consists of three parts, namely a vise part 10,1'a lever part 11 and a handle member and burnishing tool supporting part 12., The'part 1O consistsof a member 13 substantially L-shaped in cross sectional form 'so as to be supported'upon a table, work-bench or the like indicated at 14 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The downwardly extending. plate 13a of the member '13 constitutes one jaw of the vise, the other jaw being independent of and movable relatively to the jaw l3 by winged nuts 16 mounted upon threaded ends of rods .17, the latter being secured to theendportions 'ofthe aw 13a and extending therefrom in the form of outwardly and laterally bent arms adapted to lie upon the surface of the bench or table 14 and being in alinement with the lower surface of the horizontal U-shaped portionl3b of the part '10. winged set screw 18 is also arranged upon the jaw '15 at the lower end thereof and is adapted to engage the face of a scraping or other tool 19' to prevent any possible shifting of the tool within said aws. The rod 27 is secured to the tube and projects above the upper surface thereof and is externally threaded to re ceive a winged nut 28 and an adjacent lock nut 29 as well as a nut which limits the downward movement of the handle member 12 on said pivot rod.
3 One end of the handle member 12 which is tubular in form in the construction shown is provided with an aperture 31 in its upper wall to freely receive the pivot rod 27 and with an elongated aperture .32 in its: opposite or lower wall to permit the free vertical swinging of the hand-le-with-respect to saidrod, this construction also permitting the rotation of the handle member-onsaid rod as provide four surfaces of contrasting contour or curvature which. are designated at a, :01, m2 andm3 in Fig. 3 of thedrawings, and any oneof these surfaces maybe arranged to operate upon the edge of the tool 19 in the op.- erationv of turning or setting the same. To accomplish thisresult, thehandle member 37 of thetool 36 is provided with four surfaces arranged in longitudinal .alinement with the surfaces ma;3 inclusive and with two apertures 38 arranged at rightangles to each other and exposed-through. the surfaces of said handle member so-as to receive a securing bolt 39 passed through the handle member and said apertures 38, the handle portion of the tool being supported against displacement, by a nut on said bolt as clearly seenin Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be noted that the lower surface of the tube 12 is in alinement withthe .lower surface of the Ushaped portion l3b'so that in thense of the. device, the tube 20, U-sha ped portion 13b andyarms 17.-will.lie flatly upon theupper surface ofthe table. or workbench 14'whereas the jaw 13a mayv be moved into engagement with one edge of said table or work-bench, and in this way, the tool may be firmly supported in the'use thereof.
After the scraping tool .19 has been fixed in position between the jaws 13aand 15 and the burnishingtool 36 properly adjusted and secured to the handle member 12, said tool may be moved over the'upper or protruding edge of the scraping tool 19 to turn or set the edge thereof, sufficient downward pressure being exerted to accomplish this result.
When it is desired to turn a comparatively wide edge on the tool 19, the nuts 28 and 29 are arranged relatively high upon the pivot rod 27 in order to provide a decided inclination of the burnishing tool with respect to j that in movingithe handle member and the burnishing tool 36 thereon over the upper edge of-the scraping tool, said burnishing tool travels in an arc-shaped path, thus producing a sliding action of the tool 36 with respect to the edge of the tool'19 facilitating the production of a turned edge l9a, note Fig. 5, which protrudesto a greaterextent centrally of the tool than atthe side edges thereof which is a desirable condition in scraping tools' This result is further facilitatedby governing the pressure of the burnishing tooland furthenbv adjustingthe leverpart 11 into its several angular positions which will change. the arc path of travel of the tool 36 with respect to the tool 19. As indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, both side edges of the scraping tool may be'turned so that the tool may be reversed in'its use in scraping floors or other surfaces and the pointedend 36a of the bu'rnishing tool 36 may be used-to sharpen the turned edgel9a in other tools of this class.
From the foregoing, it will'be apparent that the distinctive features of my invention reside first in the provision of a device in connection with which a scraping tool may be firmly supported in the operation of turning the edgethereof, and furthera device whichwill permit the application of sufii cient pressure of the burnishing tool upon the edge of the scraping tool to properly turn or set the edgethereof, and still further to governing and controlling the angular arrangement of the burnishing tool with. respect to the edge of the scraping tool and to control the swinging or sliding movement of the-burnishing tool in the operation there of and especially in the provision of a device which will accomplish the results above specified which isof simple and practical construction.
In this connection it is also to be noted that the arms 1'? perform an important fun ction in preventing the rocking or displacement of the vise part 1.0 with respect to the table or other support 14 in the swinging movement of the burnishing tool especially when at the side edge portions of the scraping too]. Still further, it is to be noted that by using the comparatively sharp surface m3 of the burnishing tool 36, more efficient results can be accomplished in the operation of turning the edge of. the scraping tool than when a surface suchas a: orwl is used. In
some instances, it is desirable to provide a fine edge on the scraping tool whereas in other cases a verycoarse edge is desirable especially when heavy scraping is desired It will therefore be seen that with my improved device, the edges of scraping tools may be formed in the most efficient andpractical manner.
It will be understood, that while I have shown and described certain details of con struction for carrying my invention into effeet, that I am not necessarily limited to the construction herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a workpiece supporting part, means for securing a workpiece in connection with said part, a burnishing tool supporting member adjustably and pivotally mounted in connection with said first named part and adapted to move over the surface of a workpiece supported in said part, means for detachably and adjustably supporting a burnishing tool in connection with said member, and the cross sectional from of the blade of said tool being irregular to provide a plurality of longitudinal surfaces of different curvatures.
2. A device of the class described comprising a vise part in connection with which a workpiece is adapted to be supported, said vise part comprising relatively movable jaws, the arrangement of which is such as to form a workpiece receiving chamber opening through upper and lower edges of said jaws, a rod-like handle member, means for pivotally supporting one end. of said handle member to permit its swinging movement over the upper edge of said jaws, said handle member being movable vertically on said means for adjusting said handle member vertically with respect to said jaws to vary the inclination of the handle member with respect thereto, a tool arranged longitudinally of and beneath said handle member and means for detachably supporting said tool in connection with the handle member.
3. A device of the class described comprising a vise part in connection with which a workpiece is adapted. to be supported. said vise part comprising relatively movable jaws, the arrangement of which is such asto form a workpiece receiving chamber opening through upper and lower edges of said jaws, a
rod-like handle member, means for pivotally supporting one end of said handle member to permit its swinging movement over the upper edge of said jaws,- said handlemember being movable vertically on said means for adjusting said handle member vertically with respect to said jaws to vary the inclination of the handle member with respect there to, a burnishing tool, the blade of whichis arranged longitudinally of said handle member, means for detachably supporting said tool in connection with the handle member, the cross 7 sectional form of the blade of said tool being irregular to provide a plurality of longitudinal surfaces of different curvatures, and
means for adjusting the tool with respect to the handle member to arrange the different surfaces in position to operativelyengage a workpiece supported in the jaws of the Vise part. s
4. A device of the class described comprising a visepart in connection with which a workpiece is adapted to be supported, said vise part comprising relatively movable aws, the arrangement of which is such as toform aworkpiece receiving chamber opening through'upper and lower edges of said jaws, a rod-like handle member,means for pivotally supporting one end of said handle member to permit its swinging movement over the upper edge of said jaws, said handle member being movable vertically on said means for adjusting said handle member vertically with respectto said jaws to vary the inclination of the handle member with respect thereto, a

The combination with a device for turn ing the edges of scrapers comprising a vise part for clampinga scraper in position to expose theedge to be turned and a tool supporting member pivotally and adj ustably mounted in connection with said vise part, of a burnishingtool adapted to be supported in connection with said member and the cross section of the blade of said tool being irregular to provide a plurality of longitudinal surfaces of different curvatures adapted to operatively engage the edge of the scraper and to control the extent of turning of suchedge, and means for adj ustably supporting the burnishing tool. in connection with said member to arrange the different longitudinal surfaces in position to operatively engage the scraper. A device of the class described comprising a workpiece supporting frame adapted to be supported upon a workbench, said frame including a vise portion by means of which a workpiece may be clamped thereto, an upwardly extending rod on said frame, a handle member mounted on said rod and capable of rotary and vertical swinging movement on said rod, means adjustably supported on the rod for limiting the upward movement of the handle member with respect thereto to regulate the inclination of the handle member with respectto a workpiece supported in the vise portion of the frame, a burnishing tool arranged longitudinally of said handle member, means for detachably supporting said tool in connection with the handle member and means for adjusting the position of said rod with respect to the vise portion of said frame.

A device of the class described comprising a workpiece supporting frame adapted to be supported upon a work-bench, said frame involving means for clamping a workpiece in connection therewith, an upwardly eXtending pivot rod arranged in spaced relation to said clamping means and a tool supporting member mounted upon said rod and adapted to swing thereon to move a tool on said member relatively to a workpiece supported in connection with said frame, said member bemg movable vertically on said rod to vary the angular position thereof with respect to a workpiece, adjustable means on said rod for limiting the movement of said member thereon, means for adjusting the position of I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionl have signed my name this 4th day of September, 1929.
