METHOD OF MANUFACTURING PAPER SIP S'I'RAW Filed March 12, 1931 avwmtoz Karl E. Gar'lz'rtg wbib flaw,
Patented Apr. 19, 1932 uNrrEo STATES' KARL GARLING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY mnrnon ormnurncrunme rerun srr-srnaws Application filed March 12, 1981. Serial No. 521,908.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to impart a distinctive characteristic feature to the straws; to accentuate a structural feature of the straws; to form a natural 5 iral line running throughout the complete straws; and
to simplify the method for imparting to' the product thespiral line above referred to.
Drawin 98 strip, the side of which has been treated to color the edge of the strip.
Figure 2 is a pictorial view-showing a sip-straw constructed and arranged 1n accordance with the present invention, and as resulting from the method herein disclosed, a portion of the paper strips composing the straw is shown in separated relation.
a Description The present invention relates particularly to paper sip-straws such as are disclosed in an application for patent filed by me under date of December 5, 1930, the serial number of which is 500,157 and consists principally in preparing and employin paper strips pretreated to impart to the nished product a spiral line such as indicated by the numeral 7 in Figure 2 of the drawings. I
As disclosed, straws manufactured in accordance with the present invention are 'constructed of two separate strips of paper indicated in the presentdrawings by the numerals 8 and 9. These strips are of even width and are so disposed that the edges of the outer strip are approximately disposed at the median line of the inner strip 8. The
edges of the outer strip 9 are tinted or col-' ored as indicated at 10 in Figure 2. In this figure, one only tinted, but it will be understood that both edges may be tinted, in which case the line 7 would be intensified or broadened. "if
As shown in Figure 1, the strip 9 is tinted of the edges is shown as or colored while rolled on the spool 11. Subsequently, this strip 9 is provided with ad hesive 12 which causes the strip 9 to adhere to the strip 8 when overlaid thereon.
When, now, in the process of manufacture,
the strips 8 and 9 are handled to form the sip-straw by being spirally wrapped in superosed relation on a suitable mandrel or implement, the tinted edge or edges of the strip I 9 will show throughout the length of the Figure 1 is a side view of a roll of paper straw as seen at the left of Figure 2 of the drawings. YV
It will. be understood that any suitable color for tinting the edge or edges of the strip 9 may be used. Also it, will be under- 0 stood that if desired, one edge of the said strip may have one color and the opposite edge another color, which combining in the finished product, would give varled and pleasing efiects.
Claims:
1. The method of making paper sip-straws by spirally wrapping paper strips in superposed relation, cqloring the outermost strip prior to wrapping it so that the colored por- I tion forms a visible spiral area on the completed sip straws, and adhesively uniting said strips.
2. The method of making paper sip-straws," by spirally wrapping paper strips in superposed relation, coloring the edge of the outer; most strip prior to'wrapping it so that the colored edge portion forms a visible spiral line on the completed sip-straw, and adhesively uniting said strips.
3. The method of making paper sip-straws by spirally wrapping paper strips in superposed relation, coloring the edge portions of the outermost strip prior to wrapping it so i 7 that the colored' edge portions form-visible 85 spiral areas on the completed sip-straws, and adhesively uniting said strips. 4. The method of making paper sip-straws by spirally wrapping paper strips in super- P-Q del tion,
coloring the edges of one of said strips prior to wrapping it so that the colored portion forms a spiral area on the completed sip-straws, and adhesively uniting said strips.
5. The method of making paper sip-straws by spirally wrapping paper strips in superposed relation, .coloring one edge of "said strips prior to wrapping it so that the colored portion forms a spiral area on the completed sip-straws, and adhesively unitin said strips.
