HOSE NOZZLE FOB DISPENSING APPARATUS Application filed February 20, 1929. Serial no. 841,856.
This invention relates to improvements in hose nozzles for dispensing apparatus, and the object thereof is to provide a nozzle for the dispensing hose of such apparatus, of that character usually employed at gasoline filling stations, where the discharge of the gasoline'from the dispensing apparatus is controlled by a valvular nozzle. Another object is to provide a hose nozzle with a valvular meansfor manually controlling the discharge flow of liquid therethrough whereby the flow may be entirely shut ofl, permitted to flow freely through the nozzle, or restricted to a more or less extent. A further object I is to provide in connection with the manually controlled discharge means an automatically operated outflow valve whereby the hose is prevented from being drained of its liquid content following the dispensing operation. Another object is the provision of means to retard closing movement of the valve of a dispensing nozzle whereby concussions of liquid within the nozzle are obviated as the flow is shut ofl. Also, an especial feature of the invention is the provision of manually operated means for controlling the valve of a. discharge nozzle wherebyvthe o erator is enabled to sustain the yalve in a de ite open position. 1
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I F ig'. 1 is a vertical section of a hose nozzle embodying the invention;

The invention consists of a tubular body 1 having a threaded socket 2 at one end for connection with a dispensing hose (not 50 shown) in the usual manner.
tubular body is a partition 3 having a passage- Within the way 4 therein and provided with valve seats 5 and 6 disposed about the ends of said passageway respectively. Spaced from said partition in one wall of the nozzle body is provided a threaded opening-7 in which is secured a cap 8 which serves as a dash-pot chamber and by which said openingis closed, and spaced from the opposite side of said partition vin the corresponding wall of said nozzle body is disposed a stufling box 9, said 60 passageway, dash-pot and stufling box being in axial alinement.
An outflow check valve 10 is disposed so as to contact with the seat 6 in said partition and is held yieldingly thereon by a compression-spring 11 which is interposed between said valve and the stuffing box. A thrust-pin 12 extends through the s'tufling box and is provided with an extension 13 of reduced diameter, which extension passes loosely through the check-valve 10, said pin being provided with a shoulder 14 that comes into contact withthe outer face of the checkvalve by which the inward thrust ofthe pin islimited and'which holds said check valve positively upon its seat. A piston member 15 has sliding movement in the cap 8, and a plunger 16 has limited sliding movement in said piston through" the axial center thereof, there being a nut 16' on the end of said plunger to engage said piston. Said plunger has an annular flange 17 spaced from said plunger, .and a compression spring 18 is interposed between said flange and the plunger, and a second compression 35 spring 19 is disposed within the dash-pot and bears against said piston in opposition to I the said spring 18. The springs 18 and 19 are of unequal strength and exert force in opposite directions against the piston. The spring 18.has greater resistance than the spring 19 and is partially compressed when placed in position. Upon the plunger 16 is secured a shut-off valve 20 that is normally held upon the seat 5 in the partition 3 through the action of thes'prings18 and 19. Also, a chokevalve 21 is secured upon the plunger adjacent the shut-off valve and normally projects into the passageway 4. The inner end of the explunger 16 so that when the pinis moved inwardly, the plunger is correspondingly moved so that the shut-0d valve 20 is raised from its seat and the choke-valve is removed from the passageway, during which action the piston is forced into the dash-pot through the action of the spring 18, opposed by the spring 19. An operating lever 22 is pivoted on a lug 23 that projects from the body 1 and has actuating relation with the thrust-pin 12. Also i a guard 24: is attached to the body 1 and shields the operating lever so as to prevent unintentional movement thereof. A nozzle tip 25 is secured in the discharge end of the tubular body 1, and a hook 26 is provided for the nozzle body whereby the nozzle may be suspended from a suitable support (not shown) by detachable connection therewith.
In utilizin the invention, the liquid to be dispensed is supplied to the tubular body from a suitable dispensing apparatus through a hose by which said body and apparatus are connected in the usual manner, and under sumcient pressure to unseat the check-valve 10 when the valve 20 is opened. Said dispensing apparatus and the discharge hose therefor are not illustrated, as their particular form is immaterial and said apparatus may be of any suitable character such as those in common use that are capable of supplying the liquid to be dispensed so as to cause a proper discharge of the liquid past the checkvalve. The nozzle tip is then inserted into a receptacle (not shown) to be filled. By manipulating the operating lever 22, the thrust-pin is forced inwardly which causes corresponding movement of the plunger 16 and shut-oil valve 20 and also the chokevalve 21 fixed thereon. The piston member 15, through the action of the spring 18 is moved into the dash-pot as the plunger is actuated, causing compression of the spring 19, and the expulsion of the fluid content of the dash-pot therefrom. When the shut-ofl valve 20 and check-valve 12 are thus positioned the liquid entering the tubular body from the dispensing hose under pressure flows through the passageway 4, forces the checkvalve from its seat and flows through the passageway 4 and is finally discharged through the nozzle tip 25. 4 is sto ped. At this stage, the check-valve, shut-oil valve and choke-valve are disposed in the positions, and the spring 18 is partially compressed, as shown in Fig. 2.- As
greater force is required to compress the spring 18 than that required to compress the spring 19, a corresponding increase of man ual force applied to the operating lever is required, and thus the operator in manipulating the lever 22 is enabled to ascertain through his sense of feeling the posit-ion of the shut-old and choke-valves as well as when the check valve is positively held upon its seat. For instance, when the movable parts are positioned, as shown in Fig. 3, any further inward movement of the thrust-pin is noticeably resisted by the spring 18, and out- .ward movement of the thrust pin, when permitted by corresponding movement of the lever 22, is occasioned by the expanding force of the spring 19. -As the shut-01f valve is moved from its intermediate position, shown in Fig. 3, to closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, the piston member is moved with the plunger 16 by the expanding action of the spring 19, and such movement of the piston member is opposed because of the vacuum created thereby in the dash-pot. manner the closing of the shut-0H valve and consequently shutting oil of the flow of liquid through the passageway are gradually efi'ected, and such concussions as'are usually occasioned by sudden stopping of the flow of liquid in the dispensing hose are avoided.

' What I claim is 1. A liquid dispensing nozzle having a tubular body with a partition therein provided with a discharge passageway, a spring pressed outflow check valve closing said passageway, a thrust-pin having a shoulder to engage and hold said valve in.closed position and an extension movably extending through said valve, a dashpot in said body, a piston head in said dash-pot, a plunger having sliding movement in said head operated by said thrust-pin, a shut-oil? valve on said plunger opposite said check-valve normally closing said passageway, a choke-valve on said plunger normally extending into said passageway, a compression spring disposed between said piston head and plunger, another compression spring having less resistance than the former spring located in said dashpot and bearing in opposition to the former till.

3. A nozzle having a tubular body provided with a passage way therein; a dashpot in connection with said body; a piston head therein; a compression spring in said dash-pot acting against one end of said head; a plunger having sliding. relation with said head and'provided with a valve for sealing said passageway; a second compression spring, having greater resistance than the former spring acting against the op osite end of said head and operatively relate with said plunger; a thrust pin operatively related with said plunger; and actuating means for said thrust-pin.
4. A liquid dispensing nozzle having a tubular body with a partition therein provided with a discharge passageway, a. shutoff valve normally closing said passageway at one end thereof, a choke-valve movable with said shut-ofl valve extending into said passageway when said shutofi valve is closed, a spring pressed check valve normally closing the opposite end of said passageway, a thrust pin disposed so as to engage and open said shut-off valve and having means engageable with said check valve to hold it in a closed position after said shut-off valve is opened, and means for actuating said thrust- 5. A liquid dispensing nozzle having a tubular body with a partition therein provided with a discharge passageway, two valves normally closing said passageway at opposite ends thereof respectivel ,a' spring e for each of said valves norma y holding said valves in closed position, a thrust-pin' disposed so as to engage and open one of said valves and provided with a shoulder adapted to engage and hold the other valve in closed position after the said one valve is opened, and means for actuating said thrust-pin.
