DAVID T..MCCLELLAN AND THOS. J. MCBRIDE, OF MOUNT VERNON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,976, dated December 5, 1876; application filed August 2l, 1876.
To all whom it may conocia:
Be it known that we, DAVID T. MCGLEL- LAN and THOMAS J. MCBRIDE, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which for part of this specilication.
Our invention relates to covers for barre-ls, casks, and the like.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a plan view of a cover provided with our said invention. Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation, of two forms or embodiments of which said invention is capable.
The invention consists in the parts and combinations, as will hereinafter be more fully specified and claimed, wherein A is a lid or cover of any suitable material and fashion. This lid is divided into two parts, so that when one part thereof is secured to the barrel, the other, hinged or attached' thereto, may be thrown back thereon. and the barrel thus partially opened. To one section of the lid or cover A is attached a frame or guides, B B. Said frame may be constructed in one piece, or of several parts, separately attached, as
may be desired, and is of any suitable form necessary to accommodate the parts hereinafter to be described. G C are the forked or pronged fasteners orl bars, made preferably with two prongs, and ot' such a length as -to accommodate the outer or inner shape of the barrel. When itl is desired that the prongs shall engage upon the inside of the barrel, they are made straight, as shown in part first of Fig. 2. If, however, as might frequently be the case, it is desirable that the retaining mechanism be situated outside of the barrel, the prongs of the fasteners or bars O are lengthened and turnedv down and under the cover, as shown in part two of Fig. 2, whereby the points will engage upon the outside of the barrel and accomplish the same result.
It' desired, the prongs of the fasteners or bars C may be replaced by a single-pointed bar. D is a rod connecting the pronged fasteners or bars O. It is provided with right and left hand screw -threads c, which, engaging with fasteners O, simultaneously move them toward or from each other, as said rod D is turned one way or another by the thumbnut d.
The operation of the device is as follows The lid A, provided with the parts hereinbefore described, is placed upon the barrel, and the screw-rod D is turned until the points oi' the fasteners G engage with the sides of the barrel. When this is accomplished it will be apparent that the lid A is securely fastened to the top of the barrel. Whenever necessary, the barrel maybe opened by swinging back the loose section A of the lid hereinbefore mentioned.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lid-fastener consisting, essentially, in the combination, with two separate pronged or pointed bars, of an intermediate reversely screw threaded rod, whereby the engagingbars may be readily adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the bars C C, supported in guides B B, secured to the lid of a tub or other receptacle, ofthe reversely screwthreaded rod D and thumbnut d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
