GEORGE J. VINSON, 0F STILLWATEBI, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GOING, OF STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA PATENT OFFICE W.IE.
SAFETY STEAM REGULATOR Application filed August 16, 1930. Serial No. 475,827.
The present invention relates to steam reg ulating devices and more particularly to a safety regulator for interposition in a fuel supply line.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is particularly adapted to be interposed in a gas supply line and which is so constructed as to maintain a continuous flow of gas to the burner, the flow of gas being dependent upon the pressure of steam in the boiler.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adjustable regulator of this character which may be adjusted so as to maintain the desired pressure of steam in the boiler, the
pressure of steam being dependent upon the quantity of fuel passing through the regulated supply line.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view partly in detail of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention; and V Figure 2 is a detail top plan view of the valve plate mounted within the device.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the
' numeral 10 designates generally a casing or housing comprising an upper member 11 and a lower member 12, the upper member 11 comprising the inlet chamber which is provided with an inlet port 13, and the lower member 12 comprises an outlet chamber which is provided with an outlet port 1 1. The inlet port 13 may be connected to one side of a fuel supply line and preferably a gas line, and the outlet port 14: may be connected to a burner of any desired type which is positioned in a boiler for generating steam, hot water, or the like.
A disc-like plate 15 is interposed between the upper and lower chambers 11 and 12 respectively and is provided with a threaded axial aperture 16 in which a valve seat 17 is positioned. The plate 15 may be secured between the upper and lower chambers 11 and 12 respectively by means of bolts, screws or the like, 18. The lower end of the lower chamber 12 is preferably restricted as at 19, and a plate 20 which is provided with an axial pipe connection 21' is secured to the restricted lower end portion of the outlet chamber 12. An annulus 22 is interposed between the plate 20 and the lower end of the chamber 12, the annulus 22 comprising a spacing ring or member, and an expansible or resilient diaphragm 23 is interposed between the upper end of the spacing ring 22 and the lower end of the outlet chamber 12, the diaphragm 23 and the plate 20 providing a steam chamber in which steam from the boiler is adapted to be positioned.
The plate 20, together with the annulus 22 and the diaphragm 23, may be secured to the outlet chamber 12 by means of bolts 24 or the like and, if desired, suitable packing members may be interposed between the plate 20, the ring 22, and the diaphragm 23 so as to pre vent the steam within the steam chamber 25 from passing upwardly into the outlet fuel chamber 12. valve member 26 is positioned on the diaphragm 23 and mounted within the outlet chamber 12, the valve 26 having a tapering upper end portion which is adapted to seat on the valve seat 17 The valve stem 27 extends upwardly from the valve 26 and protrudes outwardly of the upper or inlet chamber 11, and a threaded sleeve 28 is mounted axially of the upper chamber 11 and is positioned about the valve stem 27.
A spring 29 is mounted about the valve stem 27 within the upper chamber 11, and one end of the spring 29 bears against a transversely disposed pin 30 which is mounted in the valve stem 27 and the opposite end engages against the lower end of the adjustable sleeve 28 so that when the sleeve-28 is moved longitudinally of the valve stem 27, the tension of the spring 29 is correspondingly increased or decreased.
A washer 31 is interposed between the lower end of the spring 29 and the pin 30 and, in like manner, a second washer 32 is interposed between the upper end of the spring 29 and the lower end of the adjustable sleeve 28. A look nut 33 is threadably positioned on the sleeve 28 so as to lock the sleeve in adjusted position. A packing gland 3 is positioned about the valve stem 27 and is threadably mounted in the adjustable sleeve 28.
In the operation of this regulator, the in let port 13 may be connected to the desired fuel line which maybe either agas line-or a fluid fuel line and the outlet'port 14: connected by suitable pipe connections to the burner mounted in the boiler. connection 21 may be connected by suitable pipe line to the steam boiler and the tension ofthe spring 29 adjusted by means of the adjustable sleeve 28 so as to normally maintain the valve 26 in open position. \Vhen a suitable pressure of steam has been generated in the boiler, the steam will force the diaphragm 28 upwardly and coactively move the valve 26 upwardly against the tension of the spring 29 and thereby either close entirely or partially close the valve opening so as to control the amount of fuel passing from the upper or inlet chamber to the lower oroutlet chamber and into the burner.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that a relatively simple regulator has been designed which may be mounted at any point in a fuel supply line and which. will maintain the desired steam pressure in the boiler at all times. lVhile the regulator-herein disclosed has been particularly devised for use in connection with a gas fuel, I do not wish to be limited to this-construction as, if desired, the regulator herein disclosed may be used with a liquid fuel supply line.
It is, of course, understood thatvarious changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications beingrestricted only by the scope of the following claim:
What is claimed is A steam regulator comprising a casing including two members having abutting end portions, an outstanding flange carried by each abutting end, securing means extending through the flanges, a rigid plate interposed between the flanges for dividing the casing into two compartments and having an opening therethrough, one of said compartments having an intake port and the other having an outlet port, a valve member for closing the opening in said plate, resilient means for constantly urging said valve into open position, one of said members having a reduced flanged end, a flanged member engaging said reduced end, means engaging the flanges of said reduced end and said flanged member for securing the flanged member to the reduced end, a diaphragm interposed between The steamsignature.
