My present invention has reference to a carburetor for internal combustion motors, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a carburetor with means for heating the gaseous fluid in its flow therethrough so that the combustible gases will be delivered into the. engine cylinder in a dry condition so that the engine will perform its duty in an easier and better manner than is usual and also whereby a material saving in fuel is obtained. 1
To the attainment of the foregoing the in- 'vention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed. .5 In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through a carburetor in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
The carburetor includes the fuel receptacle or float chamber 1 which is cylindrical in cross section. The pivotally supported float in the chamber 1. indicated by the numeral 2, carries the usual needle gasoline inlet valve 3 which normally occupies a seat at the end of the gasoline intake pipe 4. To one side of the float chamber 1 there is integrally formed the mixing chamber 5 which is also in the nature of a cylinder. The mixing chamber is extended a suitable distance above the float chamber and is attached to the fuel intake manifold in the usual manner. The mixing chamber. adjacent to the top thereof,
' is provided with the usual throttle valve 6 and the bottom of the said chamber 5 is provided with series of spaced round air inlet openings 7. The bottom of the chamber 5 extends a slight distance below the bottom of the float chamber 1, and preferably and as disclosed by Figure 1 of the drawings, the apertured bottom 7 is provided at its periphcry with an angle flange 8 in which is seated for turning adisc shutter valve 9, the said valve having apertures 10 to be brought into or out of register with the apertures or openings 7 in the bottom of the chamber 5. The central portion of the bottom is preferably formed with a flanged tubular extension 11 that is received through the central opening 1931. Serial No. 532,902.
in the shutter valve 9, and the said bottom is also centrally formed with an upwardly directed tubular element 12 at a distance from its upper end and with an inwardly extending annular enlargement 13 that affords a seat 55 for the needle valve 14 that is screwed through the closed bottom of the member 12. A tube 15'is screwed between the bottom of the float chamber 1 and communicates with the bore of the tubular member 12 adjacent to the closed bottom of said member 12. The member 12 provides the lower portron of the spray nozzle of the carburetor, the upper portion being also in the nature of a. tube 16 that is screwed in the tube 12 and u which part 16' has its outer end closed and provided with a central aperture 17 through which the fuel is sprayed. A hollow substantially conical member 18 is arranged in the chamber 5 to reduce the area thereof or 7 rather to provide a flared upper portion through which the spraying fuel passes from the nozzle.
Arranged around the nozzle or rather the extension 16 thereof and resting on the shoulder afforded by the upper end of the tube 12 there is a. cylindrical casing 19 which is preferably of nickel or like metal. The casing has a tubular bore 20 through which the nozzle 16 passes. The inner tubular so member affording the bore 20 and the interior of the casing 19 are lined or have arranged thereagainst asbestos or similar non-heat con-. ducting facings 21.
The upper end of the cylinder 20 is preferably integrally formed with a lateral tube or pipe extension 22 which is passed through an opening in the boss in one side of the chamber 5 and which has screwed thereon a jamb nut 23. The pipe or tubular member 22 provides a conduit for electric wires that provide the circuit for a battery 24;. and the said wires are connected to the ends of a coil 25 that is wound around the inner tubular asbestos facing 21. The circuit wires for the heating coil 25 have arranged therein a hand operated switch 26. The switch is oi. the ordinary type having a resistance wire therein whereby the current directed to the coil and likewise the heat from the coil may be regulated or shut off. J
The improvement provides a material aid in starting an automobile engine in cold I weather, but also serves as a means for continuously heating and, therefore, drying the vaporized fuel so that the same is delivered into the engine cylinders in a dry state with the result that a better combustion is obtained, the engine is permitted to run in a smoother manner than is usual and with a matierial reduction in the quantity of fuel use While I have illustrated a satisfactory em bodiment of my improved device my features of invention are capable of extended applica- V tion and I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure herein shown and described. Having described the invention, I claim: A carburetor including a float chamber and a mixing chamber, said mixing chamber having its Tower end provided with a series of spaced circumferential air inlet openings, an apertured shutter valve revoluble on the lower face of the casing, the center of the bottom of the casing having a tubular extension providing aspray nozzle, :1 tube aifording a connection between the nozzle and the float 39 chamber, a needle valve controlling the passage of fuel through the nozzle, said nozzle having a tubular extension whose outer end is closed but provided with a restricted aperture, a cylindrical casing having its ends closed and its center provided with a tubular portion that is received over the upper element of the spray nozzle and rests upon the lower element thereof, the interior of the casinghaving a facing of insulating material and having a heating coil arranged around the central. tubular portion thereof, said casing haying a pipe extension directed through one side of the mixing chamber and affording a conduit for conductor wires which are con: nected to the heating-coil, said Wires being in circuit with a battery and a switch for controlling the flow of current through the wires.
