This invention relates tonew and useful improvements'm levels and more particularly to a device of this character which 1s especially adapted for usevby carpenters to The primary object of the invention is toV provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a level of the aforementioned character em-L bodying extensible means whereby the same may be expeditiously adjusted for use in constructing stairs of various widths. 1
Other objects of the invention are to provide a level of the character described which will be simple in construction,v strong, durable, eiiicient in its use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a study of the follow,- ing speciication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and whereinz- Y Figure 1 is a view in front elevation show ing a level constructed in accordance with this invention mounted .in operative position on a wall Stringer and a plurality of carriages of the stairs to be constructed.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspectiveview of the device.
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of a straight edge having a dove-tail key mounted thereon for mounting on the level for use on certain occasions.
Figure 5 is a View in end elevation'of the level showing the same in position on the wall'stringer and the carriages.
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view throughV Vthe level. i
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates an elongated bar having the bubble tube 2 mounted centrally thereon and a plumb 3 of conventional construction mountedron the frontside of said bar in the usual manner. The opposite ends of the bar 1 are reduced to yprovide integral projections 4j.,
The side of the bar 1 opposite to that upon which the plumb 3 is observed has formed thereon a longitudinally extendingintegral dove-tail key 5 which is adapted to be slidably disposedinl the dove-tail channel provided inthe opposedv face ofthe extension bar 8. rlhe opposite ends of the extension barBcare reduced in a manner to provide integral protuberances 9 and, as clearly illustrated in Fig',- ure 3 of the drawings, the inner side of the extension bar S-is Yprovided on its lower portion with the graduations 10. Y f
The reference numeral 11in the drawings designates a wall Stringer and formed therein is the step cut-out or channel 12 (see Figure 5) and the riser cuteou't or channel 13. "The reference numeral 14 designates a plurality of spaced, parallel, carriageshav-ing the usual step and riserfcuts therein. As clearly seen in Figures l, 2 and 5 of the drawings, the protuberance 4 on the adjacent end of the level bar 1 is adapted to be disposed in the inner end of the step cut-out 12 of the wall Stringer 11, said protuberance abutting the inner end of said cut-out. The other'end of extension bar 8 is then adjusted to the desired position, this being readily determined y by the graduations 10 thereon and a measuring rule illustrated in dotted lines in Figure l and designated by the reference numeral 15 isutilized to place this end ofthe device at the elevation at which the first stepv cut in the carriage 14 is to be. This is ascertained byv p Y placing the rule adjacent the point where the carriage is to rest and manipulating the ad-V jacent end of the tool until same is in a true horizontalplane, the height of same from n first step cut thereon, as seen in ,Figure 1. The outermost carriage 14 is also positioned so thatthe riser cut is aligned properly with Vthe riser cut in the wall Stringer 11..V lThe intermediate carriages 14 are then properly positioned. Y y
The rule or straight edge l5 has mounted on one end portion thereof, through the Inedium of the screws 16, a dove-tail key 17 for adjustably mounting same on the bar l. The key 17 is to be furnished With the level and may be secured to a conventional straight edge Jfor use on certain operations such as exceptionally Wide stairs and as a plumb rule for door and Window jambe. The straight edge l5 may be of any desired length.
It is believed that `the many advantages of a level constructed in accordance With this invention Will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it isto be understood that chan-ges i-n the details of construction may be had which Will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed. Y
A tool of the character described comprising a pair of sections disposed in side abutting relation, one of the sections having a dovetailed groove extending longitudinally lfrom end to end in its inner side, a longitudinal tenon extending from end to end on the inner side of the other section, and slidable in the groove for adjustably'connecting the sectionstogether, reduced longitudinal extensions formed integrally on the ends of the sections, their lower edges being flush With the lower edges ot said sections, one of the'sections having graduations on the lower marginal portion of its inner vside 'extending to the ends of the extensions thereon.
In testimony whereof I 'ai'x my signa-ture.
WILLIAM CHALU'PNY.
