PANY, A conronarron or NEWYYOBK I ELASTIC rnurn'runnmn f The present invention relates to elastic fluid such units in which the blades assume con siderable longitudinal dimensions. This vibration of the turbine blades is a serious factor in the operation of elastic fluid turbines, and unless some means is utilized to minimize this vibration it may result in substantial damage to the machine.
' The object'of my invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement for tying together the blades of an elastic fiuid turbine, 1. e., an improved tie wire construction, and for a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a portion of a turbine wheel provided with a tie wire embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is i a sectional view of a turblne blade showlng 1n detail the means of attaching the tie wire to the blade, and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views in modified form of my attaching means.
Referring to the drawings, a fragmentary view of a turbine wheel is shown in Fig. 1, in which the turbine blades 10 are mounted on the wheel rim 11 and are provided with a shroud ring 12. Intermediate the roots of the blade 10 and the shroud ring 12 is provided a tie wire 13 which'is disposed along the edges of the blades and is fastened thereto by means of clips 14. Theseclips may be fixed with respect to the tie wire and the blades in any desired manner, but I prefer to secure them by fused metal, the attachment being made by soldering, welding, brazing, or the like. Referring particularly to Fig. 2, the clips 14 comprise a piece of metal bent reversely on itself into U-form, the free ends of the clip straddling the edge of the blade and being suitably soldered, brazed or welded thereto clips are provided with openin gs throughwhich theftie wire 13 extendsand to which the clips are attached by "soldering,
brazing r w d na- It will benoted'thatin this construction there (18110 mutilation of the turbine blades and-that a rigidfastening is provided and which is very simple both to manufacture and to attach to the turbine blades. In addition,
While I have referred above to the use of a clip as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 which comupon itself and provided with a hole under the folded end to receive the tie wire, certain modifications may be made in this clip mem ber without losing the advantages noted above. In Fig. '3 I have illustrated a clip member 15 in which the elongated strip is folded intermediate its center and one end so that the other end projects beyond the first. In this construction the holes for receiving the tie wire are formed in the folded portion of the clip and only a single tab extends for engagement with the turbine blade. InFig. 4 I have illustrated a still simpler construc tion, consistingof a single tab 16 provided with a hole under one end for the reception of the tie wire.
Hence, by the use of that clip or clip member in the claims appendedhereto I desire it to be understood that I refer to any of the above modifications as well as to such other modifications as will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
In accordance with the provisions of the 95 patent statutes, I have described the punciple of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparaprise a fiat elongated piece of metal folded tus shown is only illustrative and thatthe invention may be carried out by other means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In an elastic fluid turbine, means for tying the turbine blades comprising a series of aligned U-shaped clips engaging both sides of one edge of said blades and projecting therebeyond, a series of aligned holes in the projecting U-portions, and a tie wire threaded through said holes.
2. The combination with a turbine wheel having a row of blades, of metal clips attached to the surfaces of the blades by fused metal and projecting beyond the blades, the projecting ends of such, clips being provided with openings, and a tie wire located in said openings and fastened to the clips by fused metal.
In witness whereof, Ihave hereto set my hand this 27th day of February, 1930.
s JOHN H, DORAN.
