Description

March 1, 1932. J. R. LONGSTREET 1,847,345
FOOD PACKAGE Filed Oct. 7, 1939 lfif Patented Mar. 1, 1932 UETED STATES JAMES RUSSELL LONGSTREET, OF PHILADELI HI A, PENNSYLVANIA FOOD PACKAGE Application filed October 7, 1929. Serial No. 397,866.
My invention is an improved food package designed to facilitate the handling and consumption of multilayer comestibles and particularly sandwiches made up of a plurality of slices of bread with fillers between them.
My invention involves the provision of a carrier or housing for a corner of the comestible, but which leaves exposed the greater portion thereof so that the food may be consumed without the dislodgement of the fillers between the slices and the latter are held in registration. By my improvements there is avoided the soiling of fingers or wearing apparel resulting from the dripping of moist 1 fillers, mayonnaise or other fluids or the dis lodgment of solids comprised in the sandwich. In accordance with my invention, it is preferable that the carriers or housings are formed of sections movable relatively to one another so as to clamp the layers of comestible in position, and such corner housing preferably comprises angularly disposed I webs fitting along two sides of a corner of the sandwich or other comestible, the webs being connected and the surfaces of the comestible engaged by triangular members, each preferably recessed along an edge thereof so as to expose the bulk of the sandwich.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of an illustrated embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, Fig.1 is a perspective 1 view of the sandwich made in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2 is a part sectional side elevation of the sandwich shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one section of the corner housing; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the section of the corner housing complementary to the section shown in Fig. 3.
I have illustrated in the drawings a sandwich made of three slices of bread 1, 2 and 3 having between them suitable filling material 4 and 5, such as lettuce, tomatoes, meats and dressings. I
For convenience in handling and consumption the sandwich may be cut to triangular form, but my improvements are applicable .thereto regardless of the contour thereof.
A corner of the sandwich is housed within a carrier clamp preferably consisting of members 6 and 7 adapted for engagement with the top and bottom surfaces of the sandwich. The members 6 and 7 have their outer edges substantially conforming with the edges of the sandwich, and the edges Sand 8' overlying the surfaces of the sandwich are recessed so as to expose the bulkof the'sandright angle to the webs 9 and 10, but it will be understood that the shapeor form of the housing will be made to conform with the contour of. the section of the sandwich to which it is to be applied.
The housing members are preferably made of wax paper, but may be made of any suitable edible or non-edible material.
If desired, the member 7 maybe provided 7 with an inner web 13 parallel with the web members 10, 10 and forming therewith a channel 14: for the reception of the web members 9 and 9 to facilitate the telescoping and prevent the dislodgment of the latter and the leakage of fluids from the sandwich. It is, however, ordinarily preferable to make the device as simple as possible, and when the comestibles to be housed are of standard thickness the members 6 and 7 may be united by an integral web of the desired width. The housing may be further secured to the comestible by sticking a toothpick 15 through the housing and comestible. I
The surface of the housing of the carrier may have any desired data or decoration printed thereon and the edges may be scalloped or otherwise cut for the clamping members and webs embossed or apertured to sup plement or supplant other ornamentation.
It will be understood that when the sandwich has been made in the usual manner the corner thereof is slipped into the housing, the members 6 and 7 pressed against the surface thereof and the clips 11 bent to hold the parts in snug engagement with the sandwich, and, if desired, a toothpick inserted. The projecting portions of the food may be consumed in comfort and safety while holding the package by the housing or carrier. 7
Having described myinvention, Iclaim:
1. A comestible carrier comprising aplurality of triangular members each having a recessed edge, and webs connecting said members.
2. Acomestible carrier comprising a plurality of substantially triangular members each having a recessed hypothenuse, said members being provided with webs, and means for fixing said webs relatively to one another.
3, A comestible carrier comprising a corner piece having angularly disposed webs, and triangular flanges connecting said angularly disposed webs, said flanges having recessed edges thereof between said webs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name this 18 day of Sept, 1929.
J. RUSSELL LONGSTREET.
