Description
J. PLACHY Feb. 23, 15932.
BATTERY CONNECTER Filed Nov. 26, 1928 INVENTOR James Flaw/2 ATTORNEY Patented Feb 23, 1932 alums PATENT OFFICE-- rmcn'r, or CLEVELAND, 01110, hs'sIGNoBr'ro moor mcnmn AND-BRASS FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO m m: connnc'rnn Application filed-November 26, 1928. Serial No: 321,975.
The object of thisinvention is to provide a terminal connection for automobile batteries and the like, by use of which the operaa tion of soldering the device to the wire forming part of the battery circuit is avolded, so that anyone can without, previous experlence apply or replace a conneoter within a very few minutes, after exposing one end of the conductor and applying the elements of the connecter to the battery terminal and the wire in substantially one operation. A furthe object-is to provide a device comprising two hamping jaws forming together two socket pogtions, one of which engages the wire, and the other of which connects with the battery terminal.
A further, object is to provide for securing the elements of the device and efiecting both clamping operations simultaneously, by the use of a single securing device or bolt.
With the foregoing andother objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made thescope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this ap-' plication':
Figure 1 is top plan. r
Figure 2 is a view inelevation. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section.
A Figure 4 is an elevatipn of one of the clamping elements or jaws.
' The conductor or wire ,to "be connected is designated 10 and one end thereofi has been scraped oi' exposed as shown at 11 and isto be connected with a battery terminal 12.
A plurality of clamping jaws or clamping elements 13 and 14 are formed-to correspon with each other in general contour, but have concaved portions oppositely located when assembled, so that socket portions are formed at opposite ends of the com lete device, the socket portions being perpen 'cular with reference'to each other.
are so tormed as shown inFigure 4 that a a viewjs howing the device in- 4 The jaws 13 and 14 haveconcaved portions such as13' and'14, the walls of which tapered socket is produced for engaging the battery terminal 12. The tapered portion is' designated 15 in Figure 4.
The socket portions at the opposite end of the clamping device or connector are formed 5 by the concave portions shown in Figures 3 and 5, the walls of these portions being roughened or corrugated as shown at 16, so that positive engagement with the bare .wire 11 may be effected.
Intermediate of the socketportion for the terminal and socket portion for the wire, fiat surfaces are provided at 17, and this portion may be regarded as constituting a shank portion of the clamping element or jaw, apertures being produced as shown at 18, and the apertures being in alignment under the conditions illustrated in-Figure 3, so that the connecting device such as a bolt 20 may pass thrueach jaw and may be secured by means of a nut 20, thereby providing positive engagement of the elements to be clamped, and in one operation.
If necessary or desirable, spacing means, in the nature of a shim, may be used in either socket, in order that the required engagement may be produced regardless of the exact size of the elements to be connected.
Having described the invention what is claimed is Abattery connecter comprising a pair of parallel arranged members having alined openings intermediate the ends thereof, said members having recesses in the opposing tening element extending through the opengrip the termiings to cause saidmembers to nal and the conductor.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si ature. v JAMES PLAg HY.
