This invention relates to improvements in card eases and binders and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The card case with `which our invention is more particularly concerned, is of the kind including top and bottom covers foldably connected together at one end for an opening and closing movement and to `the inside of one of said members is attached means for securely holding a stackof business, personal, calling or like cards that maybe detached from the stack as required.

The primary object of the invention is to providea device of this kind having a binding means on one `end of one cover for enclosing and holdingthe stub ends of a stack of" cards and which means includes a part of a fastening device for detachable locking engagement with an associated part on the end of the other cover.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device or this kind in which thebinder includes a card-receiving guide and a clamp plate movable thereon in the direction of the length of the cards and so operatively connected thereto as to clamp upon the card ends with a compressing action to hold or bind them in place with respect to the cover.

A `further object of the invention is to provide an improved binder for `this purpose in-` cluding but two parts; namely, a card end receiving guide and a clamping plate, the former having certain slots therein to receive parts extending inwardly from the clamping pla-te whereby the clamping plate is movable on the guide to grip the associated card ends to hold them in place.

In general `our improved card case and binder includes top and bottom covers which are operativelyl connected together at one end foranppening `or closing movement. Preferably :auch covers are made as end parts of" afairly flexible strip of suitable material formed transversely at the middle to permit the desiredfolding movement between said covers. At one end of one of the covers is secured a card stub Vor end receiving guide including a card end edge engaging Wall or shoulder having an upright flange at each end. These flanges ywhich are adapted to be engaged by parts of the side edges of the cards are each formed with a peculiarly shaped slot therein.

Associated with said card stub or end receiving guide is a clamping plate including a top wall for active clamping engagement with the topmost card end, and end flanges each with an inturned projection for engagement inY an associated slot in each flange of the guide. These slots are` of such forma tion that when the clamping plate is moved in one direction of the length of the cards, theprojections so engage in said slots as to which tends tocompress them in the guide and to hold them in place therein. Ujpon a movement of the clamping plater in the other direction, this clamping aetionqis removed 1 from the card ends to permit the removal of on associated card-receiving G0V the stubs and the insertion of a fresh stack of'cards in their stead. Movement of the clamping plate in the first direction, then acts to clamp said fresh stack of cards in place.

Referring now inV detailto that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, and especially to the figures, other than Fig. 2, 1 indicates `as a whole, a folding card case including .top Vand bottom end cover members 2 andV frespectively, separated by a more flexible transverse area 4 providing the hinge arrangement whereby said covers may be folded into superposed closed rela# tion and unfolded into, Aopen'position in the manner well known. Such cases which may be made of many different kinds'of materials,

l being connected along atransverse weakened line 7 for quick and easy detachment of the card from thev stub. Suchen arrangement or means just above mentioned, comprises a card stub guide'8- and an associated clamping plate 9. K

each endlwallis provided a slothaving a part 13 disposed parallel with the base and a sec@ ond part -14 curved or inclined upwardly therefrom-toward the wall `1.V When sucha Ll ll guide is positioned in place, its upright wall is arranged adjacent the transverse edgeV of the bottom cover and this brings the end walls 12near the top and bottom edges of said cover. Top and bottom are employed in this instance with reference' to the inscriptions upon said card and are used only for convenience. To secure the guide inthis position, rivets 15 pass through suitable holes in both Vthe base and said bottom cover.

The clamping plate9 is adaptedtoembrace the transverse and end walls of thebase and includes atop walll formed -at its inner free edgewith a downturne'd lip or tearing edge 16a. `When the parts are in the position just described, it is possible to insert the stub ends of a stach or plurality of cards into the guide,

under the lipror tearing edge of the clamping plate, and to engage the rear wall 11 of the guide. V`This positions the cards in place in the guide.V Thereafter the clamping plate is moved inwardly and the projections thereon will follow down the curved parts 14 of the slots in theendwalls of the guide into the straight parts 13 thereof. This will cause the-clamping plate to clamp down on the card stubs 5 with-a compressing .action and due to the natural resistancev to compression, said stubs will act to expand so that projections are forcefully engaged with the top edges of the straight parts of said slots. This causes the clamping plate to securely hold the said stubs in the guide so that all'cards are bound in placefin the case. In this respect, it is pointed out, thatythe Ybent-down lip providingthe tearing edgeof the clamping plate willbe disposed substantially in the-plane of u j the weakened lines 7 of the card so that when it is desired to present one of said cards for its intended purpose, said lip serves as an edge along which the card can be torn from the stub, thestubsfbeing retained-in the binder. After the card has thus been removed .from the case, the top cover 2 is folded down into closed position when the part 21 of the fastening device carried thereby will register and engage with the other part-20 of the fasten- 35 er on thesclamping plate 9 ofthe binder so tlat the top cover is removably secured in p ace.` v

When r-the closedfand locked card case is being carried in the pocket, or other place, both ends of the cards are protected against soiling.

In Fig. 2, we have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, wherein the binder is disposed on that end of the bottom ii cover near the transverse flexible part 4 of the case, instead of at the' outer or free end' thereof as before described. In this Fig. 2,

like reference numerals indicate like parts as j heretofore. When the binder is so arranged onthe cover, the clamping plate 9 and top cover 2 are each devoid of any fastening device parts. l

The binder includes no parts requiring screws or the like that may become either loose or lost so that the device will serve satisfactorily for a long time.

lVhile in describing the invention, We have referred in detail to the form, arrangement and construction of the parts thereof, the same is to be considered merely as illustrative so that We do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be speciiically set forth in the appended claims.

We claim as our invention l. A device of the kind described embodying` therein a cover, a card end receivingr guide member, a clamping member mounted for a relative movement With respect to said guide member, one of which members is secured to the cover, and means providing interengaging parts on said members operable in a relative movement in one direction therebetween in the plane of the length of the cards, imposing a binding action on said card ends in the guide and operable in a relative movement in the opposite direction therebetween in said plane, to release said binding action.

A device of the kind described embodying therein a cover, a card end receiving guide member iixed to said cover, a clamping member mounted for a movement on said guide member in either direction in the plane ot' the length oi the cards and means providing intei-engaging parts on said guide and clamping members operable in a movement of the clamping member in one direction for impressing a binding action on said card ends in the guide and operable in a relative movement in the other direction to release said clamping action.

6, In a device of the kind described, a folding card case including top and bottom cover members, means at one 'end of one of said cover members for binding a plurality of card ends in place in said case, and coacting devices on said means and other cover member for detachably securing said other cover member in a closed position.

7 In a device of the kind described, a folding card case including top and bottom cover members, means at one end of one of said cover members for binding a pluralit of card ends in place in said case, and inc uding a movable clamping plate and coacting devices on saidclamping plate and other cover member for detachably securing said other cover member in a closed position.

8. In a device of the kind described, a card case comprising top and bottom cover members having a folding connection at one end, means at the other end of one cover member for binding a plurality of cards in said case and coacting devices on said means and on the other end of the other cover member for detachably securing said other cover member in a closed position.

9. In a device of the kind described, a card case` comprising top and bottom cover members having a folding connectionat one end, means at the other end of one cover member for binding a plurality of cards in saidcase and including a movable clamping plate and coacting devices on said clamping plates and on the other end of the other cover member for detachably securing said other cover member in a closed position.

10. A device of the kind described embodying therein a cover, means on the cover for positioning a stack of cards thereon, a clamp member mounted for `a shifting movement longitudinally of the cover and means for guiding' the iclamp 'member downwardly in said shifting movement for binding the cerds in place upon thefcover.V
