It will thus be seen that the flame spreader will be rigidly secured to the supporting plate 26 and that the complete flame spreader may be readily formed from two easily produced stampings. 'Y
It forms a featureof this invention to effect a deflection of the air passing upwardly through the body of the flame spreader by the cap 29. Accordingly the cap 29 isprovided with the angularly arranged annular wall 40 provided with a plurality of laterally directed apertures 41. cap 29 is provided with the concave central portion' 42 adapted to deflect air, passing vupwardly through the body portion of the flame spreader, outwardly through the apertures 41. Thus a portion of the air passing upwardly through the body portion 28 of the flame spreader is deflected laterally by the concave portion 42 of the cap 29 and is discharged through the sides of thecap 29 and at an angle to the axis of the oil burner; This air passes laterally outwardly and upwardly above the flange 34 of the body member which overhangs the edge of the wiclr 20 and is thus prevented from mixing with the flame 44 'for a considerable distance above the edge'of the Awick 20. Thus the flame 44 will notV be brokenl and a higher, hotter, and steadier flame will be produced.V The cap 29 is also'provided with the openings 45 whereby part of the air passing through the body of the flame spreader will be mixed with the fla-me at a stillhiglie'r level. i

Thus a restricted amount of air will be fed to the flame '44 at this point whereby theflame will be pre vented from breaking while receiving sufllcient oxygen to prevent smoking. Further by virtue ofthe arrangement and location ofthe flange the body'portion 28 of the flame spreader maybe spaced a considerable distance from4 the' inner periphery of the to come in a moredirect contact with the 4inner periphery vof the wiclrtube to cool the same. As clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing the upper edge 58 ofthe burner VVcollar 56 extends to a point slightly above the upper edge of the wick 20. Supported on the burner collar 56` is a drum 59, this drum being reversely'bent adja cent its lower edge to engage aV shoulder 160 formed on the outer 'periphery of the burner collar56. A flange 61 carried vby thev lower f odge of the'drum 59 is extended upwardly to Aa point above the -top 58 of the burner collar 56 and terminates Aadjacent the outer edge Y of the'flange 34'of lthe body 223.y yThefdrum` 59 is provided withl the apertures 62 through which airisfadapted to pass upwardly tomix with the flame 44. The air being confined by flange 61 of the drum 59 is prevented from ymixing with tlieflame 44 until it reaches a point above the upper edge-58 of burner collar 56' as will be readilyapparent by refervence to Figure 2' of the drawings; Thus, this air is' kept away fromithe outsideof the burner collar and is not mixed with-the flame Y until it has reached a point spaced substantially from the upper edge of the wick 20, thus y facilitating a steadier burning of the flame. A further feature of this construction is Y `From theabov'e it is'believedthat the operation of this form of construction will be readily apparent. 'Air passing upwardly through the wick tube 16'will bedivid'edby the body portion yof the flame spreader 27, some of the air passing between the outer peripheryof the flame spreader and the inner periphery of the wick tube. This air will be deflected inwardly by the flange 50 and then outwardly by the ilamespreader to mix with the flame 44 at a point adjacent the upper edge of the wick 20. In Figures and 6 i a slightly modified form of' construction is disclosed wherein the flange of the wick tube 16a is provided with a limited number of openings 70. These openings permit a smallquantity of the air passing upwardly between the inner periphery of the wick tube and the outer periphery of the flame spreader to passdirectly upwardly into engagement with the flange 34a from which it is deflected downwardly to mix with the flame 44a. Thus the flame 44a is supplied with an additional current of air directed at a slight angle to the current which is deflected inwardly by the flange 50 into engagement with the outer periphery of the body portion 28a of the flame spreader. In this manner the fla-me is supplied with more oxygen adjacent its. base and a bluer flame is produced.
In Figures 7 to l0 inclusive, a still further modification is disclosed wherein the flange 50 is eliminated from the wick tube.` In this form of construction the reference character lf3 designates the wick tube and 27b `designates the flame spreader. The flame spreader 27" is provided with the cap 29b similar to the cap 29 and is provided with the imperforate body portion 70. This body portion may be a cylindrical member secured to the cap 29" as by the tongues 71 and ma `wick tube 16h there is providedan annular member 7 5 provided at its lower edge with the radially outwardly extendingflange 76 adapted to seat upon a flange 77 formed on the inner periphery of the wick tube 16h.' For securing the annular member to the body 70 of the flame spreader 27", there are providsecured as at 79 to the inner periphery of the annular member 75. The lower' edges of' the members 78 are provided with the tongues 8O adapted to be secured to the flange 8l of a collar 82 secured to the outer periphery of the body portion 70. Thus the annular member 75 is supported in spaced relation to the inner periphery of the wick portion 70 of the flame spreader 27".
Secured to the upper edge of.' the annular member 75 is a flange 85 adapt-ed to extend downwardly to a point adjacent the upperw` f edge of the wick tube 16h.
