Application filed May 31, 1930. Serial No. 458,199.
This invention relates to toys, an object being to provide a toy gun or mortar which is especially adapted for shooting firecrackers.
5 The primary object of the invention is to provide a toy gun whereby children may shoot firecrackers without danger of injury, the construction of the invention providing a toy of the above type which is safe, simple and economical in construction, and by means of which firecrackers may be discharged with a minimum amount of shredding and thus easily removed.
\Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
-0 In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of the toy showing a fire cracker in position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View 15 showing a slightly different form of the in- 2 comprises a base 10, an integral breech 11 and an integral barrel 12.
The barrel 12 has its bore 13 communicating with a firing chamber 14 provided in the breech and this firing chamber has communicating therewith a loading passage 15 which extends downwardly and opens through the bottom of the base. The breech is further provided with an opening or touch hole 16 in its top wall.
The firing chamber 14 is divided from the bore 13 by means of an annular rib 17 while extending longitudinally of the bore 13 are ribs 18 which are formed integral with the barrel and with the rib 17.
The base may be mounted upon rollers 19 so that when the gun is fired it will recoil N after the manner of a real gun.
The invention is adapted especially for discharging firecrackers and the latter are inserted into the firing chamber 14 through the passage 15 in the bottom of the gun. A firecracker is shown at 20 and its fuse21 is projected through the opening 16 so that it may be conveniently ignited.
The construction of the 14 is such that the least possible shredding of the firecracker will result so that the discharged cracker may be readily removed. In addition, the arrangement of the ribs 17 and 18 acts to materially strengthen the toy while the ribs 18 provide guides for a ball 22 which may be used if desired.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 4, the toy has its barrel 12 inclined upwardly from the breech 11 and the latter extends from a flat base 10. A reinforcing rib 22 connects the base 10 with the breech 11. The breech 11' is provided with a firing chamber 14 and a loading passage 15, while an annular rib 17 divides the firing chamber from the bore 13'. This bore may also be provided with longitudinally disposed reinforcing and guide ribs 18'.
In addition to its use as a toy mortar, the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 4 may also be used as a holder for small flags, the stafi' being inserted in the barrel. For this purpose, the base may be provided with a suitable openings for the passage of a screw 23 for attachment to a window sill or other support as shown by the dotted lines at 24 in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The construction of the firing chambers 14 and 14 is such that in addition to reducing the amount of shredding of the firecracker, it increases the exploding pressure passing through the opening defined by the annular rib and thus intensifies the noise of the explosion.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
firing chamber Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a toy gun, a base, a breech integral therewith and including a firing chamber having an opening in its top wall, a barrel extending from the breech and having a bore communicating with the firing chamber, an annular rib dividing the bore from the firing chamber, ribs extending longitudinally of the barrel and having their inner ends connected with the annular rib, and means providing for the insertion of a charge within the firing chamber. 1
2. In a toy gun, a base,'a breech integral therewith and including a fire chamber having an opening in its top wall, a barrel integral with the base and having a bore communicating with the breech and its bore communicating with the fire chamber, ribs extending longitudinally of the barrel, and a loading passage extending outwardly from the breech and opening through the base.
3. In a toy gun, a base, a breech integral therewith and including a firing chamber having an opening in its top wall, a barrel integral with the base and having a bore communicating with the breech and its bore communicating with the firing chamber, means within the bore of the barrel and extending longitudinally thereof for reinforcing the barrel.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
