Description

Feb. 16, 1932. R. c. KAPLAN ET AL WAVE CAP Filed May 15, 1950 ATTORNEYS.
Patented Feb. 16, 1932 UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE" RAE c. KAZPLAN AND MILDRED e. ELPERIN, or new YORK, is. Y.; SAID ELPERIN AssIeNon T0 SAID KAPLAN WAVE cm;
Application filed. Ma 15, 1930. Serial No. 452,564.
The prevaihngvogue 1n feminine hairdressing requires the application of a wave.
Such waves are not easy to apply and usually requirethe services of a professional hairdresser who has had considerable experience. Furthermore, aknowledge of the method of application is not only essential but in addition, the wave must be properly placed in accordancerwiththe prevailing style andthe taste of the wearer. J
- .In accordance withthis invention, anyone, regardless of her experience in dressing hair, may give herself a wave which is at once suitable to her own taste, attractive in appearance and equal in eifect to any professionally applied.
One feature of the invention resides in the cap of suitable material adapted to fit over the head of the user and suitably held in place. Positioned at properly spaced intervals in the cap as determined by the style or styles of waves in vogue are perforated strips which permit the insertion of hair retaining elements, as for example, combs. The perforated strips act as guides so that the combs may be inserted in the proper places to give a modish wave. The portions of the cap between the, strips are preferably shirred at their, junctions with the strips to provide sufficient fullness to accommodate the crest of the wave and give shape thereto.
Another feature of the invention resides in providing means-for retaining the combs in their proper positions in the hair after insertion through the. perforated strips. Preferably, thesemeans consist in elastic strips edging the perforated strips which stretch slightly upon the insertion of the combs and aid in holding the latter in position by their resillency. J
Other objects and features of the invention will be in part obvious and will in part appear hereinafter. I
The invention accordingly comprises a hair waving device possessing the features, properties and the relation of parts which will be exemplified in the device herein described, 50 and the'scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
A better understanding of the invention maybe had by reading the following description together with the accompanying drawings', in which:
Fig. 1 shows a cap properly positioned in service embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is an interior view of the cap showingthe resilient means edging the perforated strips and also the straps for holding the cap in position, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showing a portion of the perforated strip and one method of affixing the resilient edging.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a cap embodying the invention which is adapted to cover the head as shown in Fig. 1.
The kind ofmaterial of which the cap is made is not an essential part of the invention, and, byway of example, a woven, knitted, net or other suitable fabric material is suggested. The cap is held in its service position upon the head by means of a strap 2 fitting under the chin of the wearer and clasped at 3 so that after the cap is in position there is very little possibility of its being dislodged. This method of holding the cap in position is given 'by way ofexample and it is to be understood that any equivalent means of holdin the cap maybe used. Thus, if desired, a rib on may be'interlaced through suitable perforations in the edge of the, cap and tied under the chin in well known manner. The bottom edge of the cap 4 may be of elastic material or not, as desired.
Suitably positioned at intervals in the cap are rows or strips of perforated material 5 whichmay be either sewed, woven, or knitted into the cap. These strips permit the insertion of a comb 9 into the hair and serve as an indication for the proper positioning of the combs. The placing of the strips is determined by the style of the wave desired and it is obvious that anynumber of caps may be manufactured to permit the application of any number of different styles of waves in accordance with the tastes of the difierent users.
In. order to permit the proper formation of a wave, it is desirable that the portions of the cap 6 between the perforated strips have sufiicient fullness to accommodate the wave crest. To this end, the edges of these portions at their junction with the perforated strips are shirred or gathered as at 7, to gain the desired effect.
In order to assist the perforated strips in holding the combs in the hair after insertion, the edges of the strips may be faced, preferably on the inside of the cap, with resilient material and in the preferred embodiment of the invention, this resilient material is elastic cord 8 suitably sewed to the cap, as shown in Fig. 3.
The front edge 10 of the cap between the perforations may be of elastic material or not, and both materials are considered within the scope of the invention. If elastic material is used, it tends to contract the front edge of the wave, an effect desired by some people.
To apply a wave by means of the cap, the hair is first moistened with water or other suitable wave lotion and the cap afiixed in and grip the combs by its resiliency. The cap and combs are permitted to remain in place until the hair dries, after which they may be removed leaving a wave properly set in the hair. If desired, the color of the perforated strips may contrast with the color of the cap in order to more readily show up the positions wherein the combs should be inserted. In manufacturing the cap, the indicating perforations may be positioned to give either centre, left, or right part waves, of round or swirl style and may be patterned in any desired manner to give a wave in harmony with the style trend. Furthermore, in some instances it may be desirable to make the cap without the shirred effect at the junction of the net portion and the perforated strips, having simply an elastic edging along the perforated strip. Then, again an outer edge of perforated strips may have an elastic strip attached thereto which may be folded over the comb elements to secure them in position.
Since certain changes may be made in the device as shown and different embodiments of the invention made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or contained in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
The invention therefore is to be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.

10. A Wave forming device adapted to fit upon the head in service, comprising a cap of Web material designed to completely confine the hair, a series of perforated strips therein indicating a wave style, the said perforations being adapted to permit the insertion of comb teeth therethough, elastic strips edging said perforations and adapted by their resiliency to maintain said combs in position. 1
11. A Wave forming device adapted to fit upon the head in service, comprising a cap of Web material designed to completely confine the hair, a series of perforated strips therein indicating a Wave style, the said perforations being adapted to permit the insertion of comb teeth therethrough, elastic strips edging said perforations and adapted by their resiliency to maintain said combs in position, the said Web material between said perforated strips serving to conform the hair in the position determined by said comb elements.
12. A Wave forming device adapted to fit upon the head in service, comprising a cap designed to completely confine the hair, a series of perforated strips therein indicating a Wave style, the said perforations being adapted to permit the insertion of comb teeth therethrough, elastic strips edging said perforations and adapted by their resiliency to maintain said combs in position, and other elastic strips fringing the edge of said cap to assist in maintaining the same upon the head.
