My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a heating and cooling apparatus, and has for its object the provision of a device which, when used for heating purposes, will be a quite efficient heater possessed of maximum radiation and arranged and constructed to combine in the single apparatus, steam heating, hot water heating and hot air heating.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a device of this class of a structure whereby the apparatus may also be used for cooling purposes so as to cool the temperature of a room and deliver into the interior thereof a current of cooled air.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, and highly eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanyin drawings which form a part of this speci cation, and in which,

The invention comprises an inner housin or shell 8, and an outer housing or shell enclosing and spaced from the inner housing 8 to provide a chamber or compartment 9 into which the water may be delivered by the pipe 11 which may be connected by the pipe 12 to a hot water tank or the like. A conduit 10 projects through the outer housing 7 and engages in the neck or collar 13 so that through the conduit 10 air may be delivered into the interior of the inner housing 8. Flues or ipes 14 project through the chamher 9 and serve to communicate the inner housing 8 with the atmosphere through the walls of the outer housing 7. Forming a facing on the outer surface of three of the sides of the outer housing 7 is a metallic plate view of the in- 15 which is corrugated to provide vertically extending flues or passages 16 so that air passin from the interior of the inner housmg 8 t rough the flues 14 may pass upwardly as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. These flues or passages 16 are open at their bottoms as shownin Fig. 3 so that air will be drawn into these assages 16 by the current set up by the air owing upwardly through the passages 16 from the interior of the inner hous ing 8. As shown in the drawings, suitable supporting legs 17 serve to maintain the housings elevated in relation to the floor or other supporting surface on which the device may be positioned. A cover or canopy 18 is provided for the housing having a central outlet flue 19 which may open into the room or be connected to a suitable flue leading to the exterior of the room or leading to a room other than the room in which 7 the apparatus is positioned. Swingably mounted on the cover or canopy 18 are the damper doors 20 which may be swung to open or closed position so that the air passing upwardly in the flues or passages 16 may discharge into the room in which the apparatus is positioned or may be directed outwardly through the flue 19.
Positioned within the inner housing 8 are steam coils 21 which are connected by the pipe 22 to a suitable source of steam or water supply. A heating element 23, which may be a gas burner or an electric plate, is positioned in the lower portion of the inner housing 8 to serve as a heating means for heating the coils 21. These coils 21 are connected to the larger condensing pipe 24 which is positioned within the chamber 9 so that the heated steam or fluid passing from the coils 21 will be condensed in the pipe 24, thus serving to heat the water in the compartment 9 and also serving to radiate its heat to heat the wal s of the outer housing 7. A return pipe 25 is connected to the pipe 24. When the heating coils 21 are supplied with steam, these steam 5 heated coils, which may be superheated by the burner 23 if desired, will serve to provide steam heat through the apparatus whereby the room may be heated. Also the air which is forced into the interior 10C of the housing 8 will, on account of its contact with the heating coils 21, become heated and pass outwardly from the apparatus in a heated condition. 1 At the same time, the condensing pipe 24 will serve to heat the walls of the outer housing through the medium of the water in the chamber 9, thus affording a heating apparatus of the hot water type. The corrugated plate 15 engages throughout the area of the walls of the outer housing 7 the outer surface thereof, thus afi'ording radiating fins to facilitate the radiation of heat from the apparatus. In this way, I have provided an economical heating apparatus in which the three types of heating may be employed.
A water'gauge 26 is suitably connected in communication with the chamber 9 to indicate the amount of water in the chamber 9.
Positioned within the inner housing 8 are cooling coils 27, which, when the apparatus is used for heating purposes may, in order to prevent the coils 27 from being burned out, be filled with a suitable cooling liquid such as water. The primary function of the coils 27 is to serve as a cooling apparatus and to this end the coils are connected by the delivery pipe 28 and the return pipe 29 to a suitable source of cooling medium such as is commonly used in mechanical refrigerators. This cooling medium, circulating through the coils 27, will serve to cool the air delivered into the interior of the housing 8 and thus the apparatus may be used for the purposes of lowering the temperature of a room.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to theprecise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1." In a device of the class described, an outer housing; an inner housing within and spaced from said outer housing; heating means within said inner housing; means for delivering air to said inner housing; and flues leading from said inner housing through said outer housing for conducting air from said inner housing.
2. In a device of the class described, an outer housing; an inner housing within and spaced from said outer housing; heating means within said inner housing; flues communicating the exterior of said outer housing with the. interior of said inner housin for conducting air from the interior of sai inner housing; and corrugated facing on the outer surface of said outer housing, the corrugations thereof forming with the outer surface of said outer housing flues for the air passing from said inner housing.
3. In a device of the class described, an
outer housing; an inner housing within and spaced from said outer housing; heating means within said inner housing; means for delivering air into said inner housing; flues communicating through said outer housin with the interior of said inner housing an the exterior of said outer housing for conducting air from said inner housing; and a corrugated facing for the outer surface of said outer housing, the corrugations thereof forming, with the outer surface of said outer housing, flues for the passage of air conducted from said inner housing.
4. In a device of the class described, an inner housing; an outer housing enclosing and spaced from said inner housing; flues communicating said inner housing with the atmosphere;.a corrugated facing for the outer surface of saidouter housing,.the corrugations thereof forming, with the outer surface of said outer housing, flues for the passage of air upwardly therethrough; a cover mounted on said outer housing; and a swingable closure mounted on said cover and swin able into position for closing the upper en s of said last mentioned flues.
